E39 BMW Front Window Regulator Replacement DIY (Part 1 of 2)

The E39 is an amazing car, one of BMW's best. However, it has it's weaknesses, and the window regulators are one of them. They suck. When I bought the car, all four were bad, and I have replaced or repaired all of them at least once since then. Make sure you buy from a seller with some sort of warranty. Usually, if its a bad one, it will fail pretty quickly.
In part 1, I'll show you how to replace the front window's regulator. It's really quite easy to remove the door panel and install the new part. You could easily do one side in less than an hour, especially if you've done it before. Just take your time, you don't want to damage the door panel or the window glass. In part 2, I will cover the rear regulator.

Just did my 97 540i. Was a bit stumped with the star bolts along the top. Randomly thought to try a regular 10mm hexagon socket and it worked perfectly.

You'll have to pin the window up into the frame to have it stay in place without the regulator holding it up

I’ve just taken mine apart and I managed to fix it without changing over the regulator! The cables had come out of their runners. I will however change the regulator over now I know what I’m doing! Did you reseal the internal door cover with black silicone sticky stuff? Now I’ve got it all back together, the control for the right door mirror and window lock does not work! Any ideas! It all may come together when I dismantle it all again. Great video.

It may be that something wasn't plugged back in correctly. I didn't put on new sealant; I just reused the original sealant as it was still sticky.

@@350Z247 Thank you for your reply, I took it all apart again today and did a great job. I managed to fix and service the existing regulator. Now I have it all back together the airbag warning light has come on! On the dashboard. Is there anyway of re-setting it/ turning it off without buying the BMW diagnostic tool. Kind regards, Paul.

@@pauli1968 you could try disconnecting the battery for a day and seeing if it resets on its own. Otherwise, I think the dealer has to do it or use the free online software.

@@pauli1968 That's why you don't disconnect the airbag. This video is incorrect. There is zero need to disconnect and remove your airbag to do this job. Completely unnecessary. Just disconnect the negative battery terminal, before starting the job. Now, you need a BMW capable scan tool to reset it.

so i replaced both of my fronts and now i cant open the door from the inside do you have an idea on what couldbve gone wrong ?

It's possible the door handle isn't re-attached properly as you had to disconnect it to take the door panel off

What about the part where the cable is attached to the motor??? Didn't see you remove or reattach it. Motor is what moves cable up or down. Did I miss something???

Just remove the three screws holding the motor on and swap it over. It's pretty easy once you get past all the nonsense with the door card and trim removal.

@@350Z247 ......have 2003 5series. There are ONLY the 5 screws holding the motor in place. I reviewed your video again. I also looked at motor again. There aren't 3 additional screws. ?????

@@meinegeheim2801 it's been a long time since I did this or even owned an E39. 5 screws does sound right, but my E60 only had 3. Sorry this slipped through the cracks.
