the fatc though is that the e39 m5 is electronically limited to 155 mph top speed. The M5 would beat the new M3 although in my opinion... track car = M3 better choice street car= M5 best M5 maybe oldie, but still goodie

the results make sense when you look at the power and torque curves for these cars. Also in some other videos the e39 even hangs on with he e60 m5 for a few secs...before being blitz for the same reasons.

I think if you read the posts, really watch the video, regardless of getting going a small part of a second sooner, the M5's torque will result in it pulling on the M3 in the lower gears...

it is true about the torque, but the e92 revs higher, so again it goes back to being able to drive

i wonder if the m5 had a under drive pulley that gives it an additional 12hp might have kept the m3 from catching up hmm

i ran a Dinan M5 when my E46 M3 was STOCK and he barely pulled me...this seems off to me but i dont know

DCT not SMG. Anyways, from the sounds of it they both started at the same time, but the E39 makes alot more torque especially low end. Both cars have strong points. The reason the M3 pulled is because it was aimed at high end power as the E60 M5 was. Cool vid, what speed did the M3 pass you at? Im guessing knocking 230-240?

The m3 makes it's power at a higher speed than the m5 , so lower torque more speed and vice versa. Therefore the m5 starts to drop torque until eventually it gets to a point that it's putting out less torque than m3 , now that's when the m3 will start to catch up and pull away. The m3 achieves this even quicker due to shorter gear ratios than the m5 , so the m5 will be putting down lower torque at a lower rpm than if they had identical gear ratios. In conclusion the m5 will be ahead from takeoff until both cars reach a speed which favors the m3.

m5 has manual gearbox which is slower than dual clutch M3 :P thats why it catches up

E39 M5 and E92 M3 weight about the same, M3 should be a little bit lighter but a full tank of gas or a fat driver/extra passenger already makes it heavier than the M5. I did some pulls in my M5 against an E93 and had the same results as the video :)
