E39 Xenon Headlight Adjuster Replacement No Cut No Bake (Go in through the back of the headlights) Takes 3-4 hrs.

This is a great tutorial! It took me about 2 hours to do, with minimal damage to my hands (my hands were dry). I found that the fiber-optic cables for the halos were in the way of the height adjuster (the less accessible one), and I found that a 4" T15 Torx screwdriver works best to be able to push the cables out of the way. It's best to avoid using a screwdriver that takes bits, so I would (and did) use one similar to the one he used in the video, and the shaft needs to be at least 4" long to reach the screw. Also, I recommend magnetic screwdrivers for this procedure, since shaking out dropped screws is really annoying.

You sir are life saver! I have an 01 M5 all 4 adjusters broken between the two lights. I didn't want to Buy new ones nor oven them. Great step by step video you saved me. Although doing it this way isn't a walk in the park lol the up and down adjuster was a breeze the side to side I nearly Gave up on. Took me over 2 Hours for one side most of the time was spent on the side to side adjuster between finding anyway to get it in there and also lining it up into the adjuster screw. Just that entire side was a nightmare but it paid off. Thank god for alcohol lol too. Thanks again so glad I was able to do this glad you took the time to do A video

Thank you for making this video. I started my headlights on my 2001 m5 by following this but got so frustrated that I pulled the covers off. It took 3 minutes with a heat gun and they were off. So much easier with the front covers removed. I would suggest to anyone to try and remove the covers before trying to do the adjusters from the back. If not, follow the steps of this video.

My E39 failed it's MOT due to headlights pointing down and not adjustable. Mine is the last 2003 model so no bake. Second hand headlights 2003 or pre will probably be worse and more brittle, so forget that timebomb. Your video convinced me to have a go! took all day, all adjusters in, but I now have a major problem! I cannot reconnect the levelling motor. It's black ball goes into the white plastic holder that has a groove with the opening to one side to let the ball slide in from the side. Problem is, now it's all tight I cannot get the white holder near enough for the ball to slide in. The black ball and neck on the motor are thin and may break, if not done correctly. I assume you don't just force the ball into the groove from the top ? There not info on this, has anyone done it, if so how??
@TheGarthFurler4 жыл бұрын
Adrian Griffiths is it possible that the electronic adjuster can be pulled out a bit? As I recall- I screwed the new white piece in and then clicked the mechanical adjuster ball into it. Just a thought. If you want to send a pic of what you have going on it may help.
@adriangriffiths47574 жыл бұрын
@@TheGarthFurler Good idea. The ball shaft does not move manually, but I'll connect it to the car tomorrow and see if it wll extend with power connected and the beam aim dial used. I assume fitting the ball back will be the reverse of the video at 1.50 to 1.57 ? Thanks

The newer headlights (I believe after July 2002) do not have the butyl rubber that you can just heat and then remove the lens. Plus- I would rather not have to reseal a headlight (danger of not doing it correctly and now you have moisture in the headlight).
@Mant1n19 жыл бұрын
nooooo dude, you doin it wrong, there is takes to much time. just heat that glass littlebit and remove it. then is more confortible and fast to change these holders. sorry for my english..

+Mantvydas rimkus -- He's likely doing it this way because this unit is EPOXY GLUED in, rather than the BUTYL sealer. Can't bake these open. That only applies to units 2002 and earlier.

This video was very encouraging. I have an E39 2003 wagon. I was about to cut the lenses since they cannot be baked (i didn't like that prospect either). I found it rather easy to do this procedure. It was time consuming, yes, but if time is of the essence, perhaps this is not for you. Spend the money in getting someone to do it and stop whining. If on the other hand, you want to do it yourself, this video shows it is possible. A tip that worked for me: On the "squarish" (referred to as the "second one" in the video) piece, following the instructions on the video works. I made sure I had the alignment correct, then twisted the bottom part 90 degrees so it would allow me to slide it thru the small space between the base and the plastic lens. Once there I slowly slid it until it went into the rail. Screwed it all the way up, then rotated the bottom piece, wiggled the body of the headlight until it was in place and screwed the base easily once it was aligned. Securing the screw to your screwdriver so it won't fall off also works great. Thanks for spending the time in doing this.

Many thanks! I had to leave the base off the second adjuster to get it in place. I could not get it in with the base attached. When the adjuster was in (without the base attached), I screwed it on a few turns, then familiarised myself with where the base had to go by feeling for the end. I taped the base (loosely) to my finger to click it in to place. The most difficult part for me was putting the screw in to the base for the second adjuster. Thanks again. All up, this took me 5 hours: 3.5 hours for the first light, and a little over an hour the second time round.

Thanks so much for this. Us in Australia and the UK are fortunate in that that inspection hole above and front of the angel eye socket can be opened and so the second adjuster is not as hard for us. Cheers

Thanks a trillion! I tried baking mine in the hope that they would come apart but no dice so I settled in and did it the hard way. I also thought about cutting the lenses off but that wasn't very appealing. This method, while tedious, absolutely works. One down and one to go, saving the second one for tomorrow night, I'm out of beers. Quick tip, on the second adjuster you might have to manipulate the angel eyes fiber optic cables out of the way to access the Torx screw. I used a flat blade screw driver from the side while coming down from the angel eye bulb hole to get the torn screw off and back on. Side note, mine was a T15 but looks like it could be either a T15 or T10 depending. Thanks Hella....
@TheGarthFurler5 жыл бұрын
Good to hear it helped! Second one is a lot faster.
@tclynes2 жыл бұрын
Firstly, thank you, I've just finished changing the adjusters in both headlights, the second one was much quicker. One tip is, on my lights, there is a little opening on the top to adjust between left and right hand drive, if you open that, it makes fitting the second adjuster much easier, it also allows you to put the 'female' connector on afterwards. I had a challenge getting the electronic adjuster slotted back in, it is easier if it is fully extended, you can do this by simply plugging it back into the car on its own and adjusting the headlight height. I also recommend getting a long Torx screwdriver as described in the video, you cannot do the job without it, and they are not expensive. I also had a fiberoptic camera that connects to your phone, not essential, but really handy for looking up close to see what is things look like.

Had a few chunks still hung up high out of sight and did not know until i was tightening the new ones in. I thought I broke the new ones but it ended up being the old pieces that were stuck. The correct true size is in fact a T15 but a T10 being only one size smaller will probably still engage and turn the screw, especially since the driver will most likely go in at an angle rather than perfectly straight down as it catches the screw head.
