How to remove and replace the front window regulator and motor in an E46 3 series BMW. This is quite similar on a range of models of BMW's but demonstrated on an E46 1999-2005 generation 3 series sedan.

Thanks for the informative vid! I followed your guide but managed not to disconnect the airbag. It took a bit longer as I had to secure the airbag back into its place inbetween changing the regulator, and remove again to reinstall. Its worth it if you don't have the tool to reset the light though.

Very helpful. Thank you. So our driver door window does not work. Someone tried to force it open to steal the vehicle. As a result the rubber sleeve on the outside of the window has skewed into the groove. We will use your video above to see if we can reset it. Hopefully the regulator is not broken. We have another problem with our E46 3 series model 2003 sedan. When you try and lock the vehicle it opens all the windows and subsequently does not lock the vehicle. Do you have any idea what the problem can be? Thank you

This is only for the later models (facelift models?) as the original E46 has the mountings in different positions.

Thanks. Nice and clear. Did you find the aftermarket (A-Premium) piece to be precise in terms of fitting to all screw locations? Also, you plugged in that small little plastic thing in a different hole (at minute 8:00, it was unplugged at 6:45), does not matter at all?

Good catch! The aftermarket ones are ok, it depends on your budget and how long you plan on owning the car. If you can afford the BMW genuine part then I'd go with that as it will probably last longer. Aftermarket ones are hit or miss, luck of the draw really. As for the plastic clip that holds the cable, there are two holes in the door 2'' apart, shouldn't really affect operation plugging into one or the other. But good catch none the less!

FYI putting the window back on brackets has been a nightmare on my X5, is a tight space, plastic bracket cracked, the window can fall on your hand, it seems easy here but just remember how it all comes together before you take it apart, good luck

For what reason did you replace it? It looked like it was working, although making some noise.

It would crunch and go very slowly once it was 3/4 of the way open. Lots of crunching and popping. So I replaced it before it got worse and let go (as they tend to - at the worst possible time!)

Put a new window regulator on driver side. It goes up but when it goes down gets off alignment and will drop if I don’t catch it

Doubtful you need to replace the motor. My 4 are 22 years and 278,000 miles old. Unless your regulator wires got destroyed, and allowed the motor to burn up, it's normally not an issue.

Mine failed and the window is stuck all the way down is there a way to get to those 8mm bolts when it’s stuck all the way down and you can’t roll it up

M3 Noah take the door panel off, cut the regulator cables with a snips and lift the glass up by hand through the frame, secure it with a suction cup tool

I bought a new window regulator with a new motor and did everything you did. When I turn on the power the window goes all the way down and doesnt go back up ? What do you think is the problem ?

I have a question my back right passenger window falls down, and when i press for the window to go up the window goes down, is this a regulator or motor issue?

If you hear the motor moving the regulator and some banging around in the door/ clunking it’s likely the regulator. One of BMW’s all time worst design is the e46 regulator!

I have an E46 whose window is stuck in the up position - the glass TRIES to go down, and it will sometimes go down if I press it very, very hard with my hand. Any ideas? I doubt I would be able to do a reg swap - or even see what' wrong - with the window stuck closed!

The only way to get an idea of what is going on unfortunately is to open it up. Buy a regulator, and some butyl replacement. Open it up and go from there! If you take it to a shop, they'll have to open it up and look, too.

@@BIMMERZEITT I've got some butyl roofing sealant already after having to re-stick the bottom of my other door's vapour barrier. Luckily:) I would have to keep the airbag attached and hang it out of the way; I haven't got an OBD scanner to get rid of the airbag code :(

you can use any butyl pretty much just ask at auto store. don’t reuse it, might leak water into the car!
