Quick POV drive of this modified BMW E46 M3 Convertible. With catless headers, rasp terminator section 1, and megan racing axle back exhaust, the sound is insane. Add in a lightweight flywheel for easy, super satisfying rev matching, and you have a match made in heaven.

I've been watching you videos since even before I purchased my e46 m3 convertible. Having owned it now for 4 months, I can say that even though its heavier than the coupe, the trade off is the visceral experience of hearing that S54 howling in open air. I don't care for lap times... just driving.

Thanks. And no actually, with the light flywheel, sport mode is a bit overkill haha, it’s way too easy to over-rev the downshift at that point.

Are the synchros of the gearbox so resistant to wear, that regular this kind of shifting can be tolerated?

Depends on your definition of “regular”, I shift like that very infrequently (not every time I leave the house lol). Bear in mind though, shifting quickly and shifting “aggressively/roughly” aren’t the same thing. Although I shift somewhat quickly, I’m still trying to be smooth, and avoid forcing it into gear/rushing the synchros. If your timing is decent, and you know the car, you can shift quickly with minimal wear, but still accelerated I’d say.

@@BuzzytheBlue Apart from the obviously bad potential mechanical damage, that can be caused by erratically and aggressively shifting the gear lever. I'm wondering, do the synchros differ in wear in terms of their friction plate wear, depening on how quickly you press them in? (When upshift pressing gear in smoothly, but quickly, without waiting and holding the correct RPM for the corresponding gear) Have you had to replace synchros ever?

@@xypleth I’d say that’s beyond my mechanical knowledge to answer with any real authority. I’d guess that the wear/tear is increased, by how much likely depends on the drivers technique. With all that said, I’ve never had transmission issues of any kind in any of my cars. I think you’d have to drive like this a LOT to damage a transmission.

@@BuzzytheBlue Okay, thanks for the time and talk. I'd like to assume that the design of the synchros allow for frequent late shifting, with less than ideal RPM, so the wear should be somewhat similar, if not done overly-aggressive with more than ideal RPM.

Awesome sound! I have to admit that seeing more vids of S54s makes me want to trade in the Z4C 3.0si. Just as an aside, I see that the electrochrome mirrors could use replacement on the car, check out MirrorJohn. He makes replacement glass for reasonable prices.

@@BuzzytheBlue My Z4 uses the same rearview mirror and it went bad. Just ordered from him. Apparently the fluid is VERY caustic to plastics. So I pulled it out as fast as I could.

How do you pass state emission inspection (CT?) with the headers?

Have passed the car in the past by doing an exact drive cycle which makes all the OBD Systems check “Ready” then bring it straight to an emissions tester before the CEL comes back haha. Tough to nail but it works. otherwise I’ve just paid the $20, fail, renew my reg and go on with my life until the next time.

Car looks so fun to drive, wish we had roads like this where I live… I’d love to experience my E46 on these kinds of backroads I checked the mod list but didnt have listed the few things i was curious about, namely what shifter do you have (not the knob but actual shifter setup, is it a ssk?) and the diff (still stock 3.69?) Car seems really lively even w/ the catless exhaust tune and lw flywheel!

Shifter and diff are both stock! The exhaust+tune combo on this car is just a bit freakish haha, we've roll raced it with my Z4M (similar mods but much lighter and carbon airbox), and it was just about a dead heat. The M3 is a freak or my Z is slow, either way I wasn't thrilled LOL.
