E46 M3 SMG Conversion || Parts Overview and Install

Note: This is for anyone that is looking to do the conversion without machining the transmission bellhousing hence why a self centering shifter is required.
I actually made this video in November of 2021 but I never got around to posting it until now. My only complaint over these last 9 months of using the shifter is that the RTD shift knob is way too mall for my liking and just never felt right in my hand. I also wish RTD offered a threaded option so that consumers could have the option to put in there own aftermarket shift knobs vs being stuck with only RTD's knobs. Aside from that, the conversion was a success and has made the car much more fun and engaging to drive.

How are you liking the rtd without the lockout so far? Any problems? Im debating between irp and rtd. Thanks

To be honest, after about a few minutes or maybe an hour at most, you get used to having no reverse lockout. It was easier for me to tell if I had made the mistake of going into reverse because the backup camera would come on but even others that I let drive the car agreed that its fairly easy to get familiar with what gears you are in. For spirited driving, in my opinion, it's pretty hard to miss gears. Shifts are very nice, direct, and crisp. The only thing to be cautious of is that they do use a fairly stiff spring for the shifter so initially granny shifting was difficult but it goes away after a few weeks of driving similar to how lowering springs or coilovers get broken in. Personally, I love it. Whether you go with the reverse lockout or not, I would highly recommend using any of their shifters. The one and only thing I am not a fan of with the kit is the shift knob. The tear drop design just didn't feel natural in my hand and made shifting feel weird/unnatural which explains why I initially had difficulty but once I swapped over to a ball shif knob, it felt perfect. Just a preference though

Thanks for your input man, ended up buying the coolerworx one , hope i like it once it gets installed. Now i’m in the middle of taking the smg selector out. do you remember how you got yours out? Or any tips that would help? I’ve seen some people chop a few pieces off of it but i don’t want to go that route just yet.
