The floor boards expand and contract, that is why the skirting boards are fixed to the wall. By nailing a small section onto the floorboard it will come off from the skirting board. Also vibration directly goes to the wall from the floor and vice versa, and you will notice the acoustic quality of the room. The room looks great!

This is how it was done on the original floor skirting boards that I removed which look perfectly fine so I am confident it will be ok :-) I haven't attached these last ones to the skirting boards on the wall. Also, it's not the first room I have done this in and nothing has happened in the other ones.

I am sure it would be but I try not to use plastic products :-) Also the gaps vary a lot in size because the floor is so uneven :-/ It looks a lot better this way :-)
