Sooooo grateful for one last summer house video of the season. I absolutely love how organized everything is - a place for everything and everything in its place. When I think about the time and physical labour that it does and will take over the years to keep the place up, I would be daunted, so I admire your gumption in tackling whatever needs to be tackled. It must be such a lovely respite from the city and you must sleep well after all of the physical work and the fresh air. Looking forward to your updates from Stockholm this winter as we wait in anticipation for the summer house to open next year.

There are lots of summer houses that are insulated for winter and have plumbing, electricity and all amenities, just like the main family home. But that is a different category and it is not always a question of money. Some people really enjoy the simple life, many try to get a cottage near a lake. The ones closer to the ocean or on an island are extremely costly. And of course it is also a question of how far you want to go by train or car to get to the house. Mine is one hour away and by the beach. I inherited it from my parents, which is very common. In the most stteactive areas the houses are nearly always passed down through families so it can be hard to find something to buy.

We used tins at our cottage for dried food and candles. The mice can’t get into them although our building was newer and we didn’t have a mouse problem. If anyone is stranded when ice fishing or snowmobiling they can have clean food if necessary. ( this is in northern Ontario where people do winter activities) We put ashes down the outhouse. It looks beautiful.

I do remember all this, Benita. My frozen blanket in the morning, the taping of the second window, the closing of the outside taps, and preparing to keep all mice free. Being washed inside the tube for the coal stove, shivering when dried and clothed. I so appreciate my warm insulated house because of that. It was memory lane seeing you all close for winter. I bet your stove is a coal stove, not much coal is needed to heat it up. Next Spring, Benita, next Spring again

This looks exhausting. Even just the windows must have taken hours, each one slightly different, and really no way to streamline the process. It seems like it's really two jobs in one - closing up for the Winter (and thinking of every imaginable thing that might need to be done) and also imagining the Spring, and what would be nice to have in place when you make that first visit. SO much mental and physical effort. Thank you for the coupon for Craftsy - that's an amazing discount they gave us!

Buongiorno. Solo ora ti ho conosciuto.

Hi Benita, greetings from England. I do so love your videos, just a thought but if you take any plants you want to save for next year out of the pots and take home as bare roots you can pot them up and look after them at home . I can not see how they will survive with no water at all for months. Also don,t leave the lid off kettle if any mice do get in they could jump in open pans & kettles and could wee and defficate in them. I look forward to you returning next year. Hej da xxx

Geraniums will most likely be ok from my experience. If the Pileas won't make it's ok, I don't want them in my apartment over winter. The kettle has it's lid on.

Haha, it was a long list of things to do but I enjoy that kind of thing😅. And I know, poor sweet little mice, I would love if we could co-habit without them potentially damaging the house.

My landlord uses steel wool to plug holes to keep mice out. I haven't seen any rodents inside since the holes were patched years ago so I guess it worked.

I use steel wool as well,, it’s worked for years in keeping mice away.

Your Chinese money plants look so big and healthy 😍 I would have taken them back home for the winter ❄️, it's one of my favourite house plants 😊 my is not as big but she is very happy and it makes me smile every time I see, which is every day 😂. That is a lot of work to close up the house 😮, but needed. Looking forward to seeing what you get up to in the city and to how you will decorate for Christmas 🎄🎄🎄😊😊😊.
