Great Video Randy! I'll be making my Rum wash this weekend following your recipe. I do agree with you as far as using the PWM, My first run was with a PID and since then I have built a PWM controller for my still and love how precise I can get with it.

Another good video Randy ! Using a pwm myself with the mighty mini and it works out very well. Of course do to the legal issues, I only use it for distilling water and essential oils, don't you know. But I understand that it makes some pretty good rum if one chose to do that with it, ha ha. It won't be long and you will be at the 100k mark my friend. Just so you know, no matter how hard or bad a day I have had, watching you, Jesse, and George always make me feel better about things. Thanks for always being upbeat and making everyone that " visits " your channel feel so welcome. My best from NH. -- den

Hey mate! Instead of freezing your dunder, throw it in a fermenter with a tablespoon of yogurt and leaving it for months and months, occasionally letting in some oxygen. Its delicious 🤤😋

When I still my rum the heads are loaded with acetone and methanol, hangover and headache ingredients. I start on low flame until the pure ethyl comes in at the slight increase of temp. If the batch heats slow enough these biproducts release themselves and separate without a lot of ethyl spill over. The moon makes a big difference as well as to the ease of the separation.

Hello how are you? Hope all right. I'm from Brazil and I follow your videos too. The initial gravity is 1081 and the final gravity is how much it was, here I make 100% molasses rum I can't get more than 7% because I do it in Brix I start with 17 and it stops fermenting at 9 brix I can't make the yeasts eat all the sugar . Would you be able to tell me how I can improve.
@stillworksandbrewing Жыл бұрын
well brix and specific gravity are same just different scales I would say check ph adjust to 5.2 to 5.4 and make sure to use yeast nutrient

I thought you had to take the packing out of the column when you were wanting to bring out flavours from the wash🤔 so like a pot still rather than reflux

If i remember right i used 2 rolls of copper only it was not a fully packed column

Great video. I have a new guy question. Since Methanol evaporates at 148 Degrees F, cant somebody just heat up the wash to 150 Degrees F and let it run until all the methanol has burned off? Would doing that ensure that you dont have any methanol in your product? I'm assuming that maintaining a temp of 150 Degrees F would only produce methanol until the methanol is gone. Also assuming that no other type of liquid would be produced by keeping it at 150. Am I totally wrong in assuming these things?
@stillworksandbrewing3 жыл бұрын
Hi Henry, in theory you are right but it just don't work for me that way I measure temps at head and i think you need the ethanol vapors to help push the methanol thru. I always discard the first 4-6 oz. and have no problems

Looks like a good run. Did you happen to mention your final gravity reading or did I some how miss it? My last run of rum I used my sight glass as you have in the past and spiced the rum that way. Turned out surprisingly well. Some of it currently on oak and some not. So far very pleased. As I run on gas as well I am very comfortable with the hands on approach to heating. Thanks for another enjoyable and informative video.

What if you took 20% of your wash & put it aside, then added 20% of your dunder to all of your distilled to re-distill and drip into charcole with a vanilla bean wick? That was free you should try it! Really!
