Calling the drummer "a machine" is insulting to my ears - he's anything but a machine in fact. A machine could never play like he does - the feeling, the rhytm.

The story goes that the drummer’s father was in the audience at this show, and was seeing his son for the first time playing w/Dire Straits. Drummer put on an EPIC show - to say nothing of the absolute and entirely unique GENIUS of Mark Knopfler.

When Mark was in his early teens he'd practice with a friend who had some Chet Atkins albums. After listening to these albums (over and over), Mark was so amazed by the sound Chet got out of an electric guitar picking finger-style, he altered his course of playing to try to master a similar finger-style sound in the rock genre. BTW: George Harrison, Lindsey Buckingham, Randy Bachmann, Steve Howe, Peter Frampton, and a number of other well known rock guitarists were similarly inspired to seek out the Chet Atkins finger-style electric guitar sound.

They were contracted in 77 and this is their first tour in 78 I think, "sultans of swing" was on their first album. Great reaction! Dire Straits was the biggest rockband in those days. Sultans of Swing one of the greatest hits and is still very much played on the radio. On this live performance Terry's father (the drummer) was there in the audience for the first time to see him play. So he started up-tempo in accordence to the studio version. And Mark Knopfler just enjoyed that, so he went ballistic on the guitar. Terry and Mark lifted this already perfect track to an unmatched version of it. And remember Mark writes the songs, refuses to play with a pick, is lead singer and lead guitarist, his fills are so good and well timed, his timing is simply the best there is, it really makes this track come alive. BUT the most remarkble of all this is: he is actually a lefty, playing on a right handed guitar.. I like to copy-paste, because I have the tendency too write long comments. So here's my thought about this: All the famous guirarists said to their teacher back in the days "I wan't to learn to play like Mark Knopfler". The teacher always replied: "That's what we all want." Mark Knopfler is simply one of the best songwriter/guitar player all time. I think the only guitarist that has such unique abillities is the undervalued Jeff Beck (RIP). The playing style of Mark Knopfler is very like that of Eric Johnson (Clifs of Dover). They use a certain method. If you listen closely and have a bit of musical training, then you notice that they use the so called "3-arpaggio" on the key they're playing. An Arpeggio is like 3, 4, 5 notes from a chord, but played after each other, thus not simultaniously, on the A, D and G string. And Mark doesn't use a pick, so he has actually 3 fingers (two rest on the guitar) to play those notes very very quick and with spot on, effortless timing. It's almost scary. This is BY FAR (together with Terrry on the drums) the greatest, cleanest (no autotune, no distorion etc...) and fun live performance EVER. Remember the name "Mark Knopfler". Hey wrote almost all of the songs. Just check how Money for Nothing was written. It's so funny. And this song is about shelter from the rain and ending up with an uninterested Jazz Band in a bar. So THE BEST rockband (at least at that time) writes a song about a poor Jazz band. Mark is still playing, still making albums. He has a very different style when Dire Straits stopped and he went solo, but writing, the lyrics, his unmatched playing and the sound that he can get out of his guitar: For me he is without any doubt the best. Please realize what you have just seen.

The one and only Mark Knopffler and the Great Dire Straits !! I must have listened to this a hundred times since I first heard them in the 70's when they hit the British scene like a thunderbolt of genuine musical talent !! I'm now 75 and I listen to this track and this live concert regularly . To me it's the definitive live performance. Try Telegraph road from the same Alchemy live concert - you'll love it !

Loved your reaction. Mark Knopfler. The best guitarist in the world. Im so glad I got to see them perform in Copenhagen around 1987. We were actually told by the venue to remain seated at all times during the concert. At the second song we were ALL off our seats and ON our seats dancing.... "slightly" encouraged by mr Knopfler himself. After all they couldn't throw all of us out. So we were up there dancing throughout the concert -everyone! And Sultans is the best Dire Straits song ever ♥️ Cheers Susan

Maybe the best "Reaction" of this performance of the 30 plus I've watched!!! PERFECT!!!! You let the video play without interruptions,. Part of the fun in this should be to watch the "reaction" of the host, right? A BIG plus for having the largest screen image by far...it's great. I could see that you really didn't want the performance to end when it did. Same here, and I've seen this at least 100 times over the years (I'm 76). A very important note here...the drummer in this performance is one of the greatest ever...Terry Williams. I believe his rendition here is one of the greatest ever.

The song is actually based on a true story, so that's worth checking out too. This performance was one of the all time classic live performances from Dire Straits. Mark Knopfler is one of our finest singer/songwriter/performers and I love the way he looks into the camera while he's playing some impossible guitar riff an smiles as if was nothing. If you like this band, please check out another one of their other tracks 'Romeo & Juliet' another classic, and of course the awesome 'Brothers In Arms' which will give you chills.
