E90 BMW Leak Detection Pump DIY

In this video I show you how to change our your DMTL or fuel vapor leak detection pump on your E90 BMW. I am specifically working on my 2008 BMW 335i in this video.
The leak detection pump is bolted to the charcoal canister on the driver side rear of the car.
This is a relatively easy job and should take you about 30 minutes total.
I installed a Dorman 310-601 aftermarket pump.

Great DIY camera work! This really helped me out a lot. I recently started experiencing a persistent P2400 fault. Turned out the electrical cable connecting to the DMTL pump was chaffing on the protective housing - it ate right through one of the wires. Easy repair with some solder sleeves and after completing a drive cycle all looks good. It's tight, but I was able to do the repair without jacking up the car. Cheers.

I have same code e92. I did a fuel pump upgrade to a bucketles fuel pump and forgot plug in one of the dmtl lines and left it in the the tank. After that I got code p1447. I fixed the line and replaced the dmtl pump and the charcoal canister and still keep getting p1447 can there be any other causes for that code?

Did your pump make noise before you replaced it? I am getting a noise from the right rear of my 06’ E83 X3 after I shut the engine off. It sounds like something is running for a minute or two after shutdown? Does this indicate the pump is bad or is this normal operation? I note that I am not getting any dash lights or scanned codes. Awesome video: thanks Bmw 2011 128i convertible - 86k miles - got service engine soon light - The code was: 0x002B DMTL, system fault. The DMTL pump/module is what needs to be replaced. It detects leaks in the fuel system. For now i requested dealer to reset since want to see whether it will come back before i pay $680 to replace the DMTL pump module. Any suggestions? I have a code p1449, diagnostic module tank leakage pump current too high,, so I looked at the fuel pump on the left side driver side pulled it down and started the car I held the motor to the canister and I don't feel any vibration no humming sound shouldn't there be one? I'm thinking maybe the motor went bad the one attached to the canister? No smell of gas, but this code comes up with a check engine light when I step on the gas hard. Then I'll get an engine failure warning reduced power but the car runs fine! I have a 2009 BMW 335i coupe, any help would be appreciated thank you!!

Hello, I'd say it's possible if the purge solenoid is stuck and they tank can't vent. It's worth trying to replace it to see if it helps given you have a code anyway. They eventually fail in one way or another.

Currently experiencing some leakage going to the floor when I'm about 3/4 full tank and it also doesn't allow me to fill tank all the way when I pump. I recently installed a stage 2 pump but it had the issue of never being able to fill completely since I got the 08 e92.

Maybe do a smoke test on the system to see if you have a cracked line somewhere.

How do you fix the exhaust flap rattle? I unplug the vacuum hose to leave the flap open but is the another legit way to resolve it?

Leaving the vacuum hose unplugged will result in a vacuum leak. I would suggest plugging it back into the port and welding the flap open.

I did this job tonight on my daughter's 2011 328i. Only problem I ran into the three screws holding on the pump were extremely rusted. No way of getting them off other than drilling them out. I have 174,000 miles on the clock. Not sure if the pump was ever changed before. I had to find new screws to fit. Everything else was straight forward,! thanks

I was referring to the regular E90 models, the N54 and S65 powered models have it on the drivers side.

I've been getting a dmtl code 2b3d on my e92. Noticed when I get gas its not letting me put more than a few gallons. Tried manually adding more fuel and saw a massive leak coming from the passenger rear. I got home and pulled the lining out and it appears to leak from the canister with the filter inside on the passenger side... any ideas? Thanks!

@@Mdot401 I did! Turned out that when I put in a new fuel pressure regulator, there was a hose on top of the fuel pump cap or bucket that I didn't properly connect. The common issue seems to be fuel vent breather valve though

I have a fuel leak and the leak detector didnt throw a code. I see residual fuel coming from the front of the left side fuel tank (driver side) ... replacing fuel system with Fuel-It stage 2 system and fuel filter regulator kit. replacing the fuel vapor leak detector pump anyway

I’ve got a fuel drip on my e92 M3 near the front of my left rear wheel, just replaced the sending unit and didn’t immediately start dripping but within 15 miles it began dripping slightly more than it was before but only when running. Great video. I hope someone is still watching this thread. I recently got the close gas cap warning followed by the SES light with code 2A15. I changed my gas cap, reset the code and it came back after a few miles. So I changed the DMTL pump, reset the code and drove a few miles.....it came back again. Question is, what does everyone suggest I do next ? Looking at the lines there are two blue lines that go through to the rear wheel well. One is larger than the other and goes to a smaller canister bolted to the wheel well behind the splash cover. The other is much smaller and looks like it heads up to the filler....maybe. I read that sometimes they chafe on the point where they enter the wheel well area but I don't see any damage to them. There are other lines that are black, not sure where they go. I pulled the rear seat out and there is a white hose attached to one of the fuel tank caps. I just dont want to throw money in parts at it....nor do I want BMW to charge me $1000 to fix it. Any ideas follks ?

408DJREMIX Honestly the only benefit is not having a check engine light on. It's purely for emissions purposes. So if you get a code for the DMTL pump then you change it. Otherwise I wouldn't bother.
