E94: Russia vs NATO - is nuclear war on the horizon?

The proxy war in Ukraine between NATO and Russia has come into sharp focus in recent weeks. French President Macron refused to rule out sending troops to Ukraine, provoking a wide backlash. The German leader, Scholz, claimed that British soldiers are already fighting on the battlefield. Putin warned of nuclear war if NATO troops were sent to Ukraine; his leading critic, Navalny, died in a Russian jail. And a report in The New York Times revealed the CIA's decade-long operation of spy bases along Russia’s border.
As the US government is poised to deliver its largest military ‘aid’ package yet to support the Ukrainian war effort, and with European nations ramping up their assistance against the backdrop of an impending European election, the implications for Europe and the world loom large.
What do these latest developments mean? Is a direct confrontation between nuclear powers unavoidable, or does the possibility for a negotiated peace still exist?
Our panel, including Yanis Varoufakis, Erik Edman and Federico Dolce, investigates. Join us live and have your say!

To avert climate catastrophe, the WORLD must cooperate. But cooperation is impossible in an environment where rich nations are literally murdering the poorer ones, and where wealth inequality is growing. In such a world, becoming rich is a matter of life and death. Therefore, the most important matter before humanity is to devise a non violent way of ending all wars. This must be addressed by 1) reducing wealth inequality immediately (such as through the provision of free university education, free internet, etc.) and 2) reducing the threat of military violence by creating an effective method of stopping wars in their tracks by non violent means. Organized global ostracism of offending nations is one means, and the generous supply of defensive weaponry to defending nations, is another. The global south must be brought on board by addressing their poverty first, and their military insecurity, second. And then we can work TOGETHER on the environment.

@kimojolly5101 though I agree with your analysis and partly your solutions, it appears to me we face a conflict between psychopathic (void-of-empathy) people & their organizations ("incorporation" is designed to allow individuals to avoid consequences/responsibility for atrocities, pollution, violence, displacement, injustice). I see little hope for mutual-respect embracing a humanity dominated by psychopaths & their disproportionate agendas. Until EMPATHY RULES we are stuck with needless injustice, violence & suffering, imo.

Amir, thanks for your important contribution. When you say so far there's been no moves to negotiate between the parties (Ukraine and Russia) this is wrong. Russia moved in 2022 not long after the war began with a written agreement to end the war, which Zelinsky's regime accepted. On taking it back to Kiev the Zelinsky regime was paid a visit by Boris Johnson with a message from the US-UK regime not to sign. If you sign we will stop providing you with bombs, missiles and funding. We know what happened. It's primarily the US regime who has driven Germany, France and therefore Europe to this murderous policy of never ending war and financing the Military and Financial Industrial Complex (MFIC) to continue pressuring Russia and in the process enriching the themselves and continue the US hegemony across the world's financial and military system. It's the billionaire class at work. Ir's a class war against the workers of the world, you and me. Exactly the same as the climate Crisis.

@brianwheeldon4643 Valuable info. Also, preceding these attempts to negotiate, look into "Minsk Agreements" negotiated by Kiev with Russia in 2014, "guaranteed" by Germany & France to allow measured autonomy for Donbas, leaving Ukraine intact except for Crimea having voted referendum to join Russian Federation. At that point the only violence had been USA/EU/NATO/Kiev unprovoked attacks against what USA/EU/NATO/Kiev claim to be their own citizens in Donbas BECAUSE they speak their ancestral language (Russian). Later disclosed by the French & German leadership to have been a dishonest-ploy to allow Kiev time to be infiltrated by NATO to reinforce militarily while continuing their unprovoked attacks on Donbas killing 16,000+ civilians.

@LiberNoster
@LiberNoster Ай бұрын
@@metju30 it's not only expansion of NATO. It is a one sided view. NATO is a unification of state's who deliberately join. If a state is willing and ready than it joins due to it's sovereignty. If a state is not free to join than it is not a sovereign state and therefore not independent. If NATO decides to let them in it would be NATO's choice. It can vote against Ukraine's membership. But to define - from the outside - that Ukraine should be neutral and not allowed to decide by themselves to join deliberately is like denying them to be a sovereign state. Diem by this is advocating to take away sovereignty from Ukraine. Paradoxically mera25 fought against Troika decisions in behalf of Greece, arguing that the financial decisions taken from the outside took away sovereignty of the greek people. And they were right then. Try to be right even this time Diem25 and don't take away sovereignty from the outside.

Thank you all for an interesting discussion. On these issues you have to be realistic. Russia will most likely take Odessa and Kharkiv, and at that point stop and wait to see if Washington steps up to negotiate a deal. If the rest of Ukraine then becomes a neutral state this thing ends and if not Russia will take the rest of Ukraine, perhaps leaving Galicia to the Ukrainians. There will be no European troops in Ukraine not least because Europe is both weak and irrelevant. On the U.S. and Russia are important players here. On Gaza, only a full blown regional war that goes against Israel will stop the genocide and ethnic cleansing. That might happen. On climate, globally we will get very serious only when the impacts are so severe that even the elites are threatened. A simultaneous crop failure in two or three breadbaskets, for instance.
@budakon
@budakon Ай бұрын
If we can agree that Ukraine is a sovereign nation (as Palestine should be) then the question can be reduced to do we support them in their fight or not. I don't know the answer to this, but we cannot repeat the Churchill-Stalin division of Europe without Ukrainian consent. It's up to them. Also, the disjunctive reasoning that if there will be a climate catastrophe then nuclear war is no threat makes no sense. Note how it works in reverse: if there is nuclear war there will definitely be climate catastrophe. This war is very complex. I am inclined to think, if fact, that if there is climate catastrophe, which there IS, the threat of nuclear war ticks up, not down.

Around the 55-minute mark, Yanis made a comment about a comment I had put in much earlier in the session about Ukraine's nuclear weapons -- and how they gave them up. I had to go back through the entire session to make sure he was referring to my comment and not someone else's. The only thing I was stating was an historical fact -- and that part of the exchange was assurances made by the West that there would be help if Ukraine ever came under threat by another power. I did not write -- and never meant to imply -- that it was a mistake for Ukraine to give them up. In truth, I think it is fortunate for our world that Ukraine DID give them up.
@yabits
@yabits Ай бұрын
The question Yanis then asked about the implication I did not make is nonetheless a good one: What if Ukraine DID have nuclear weapons? The question then becomes "Would Putin have launched his total invasion in February of 2022?" It's an open question. Did the fact that Ukraine did NOT have nuclear weapons influence Putin's decision to attack? It's obvious that Putin's move became much less of a gamble for him.

Stanos Penos is completely misunderstanding situation in Balkans and he's falling for empty fearmongering and strength posturing if he thinks Serbia can invade Kosovo. Of course Vucic is going to say that Kosovo will reunify with Serbia sometime in the future. That's position of every Serbian leader, like Taiwan being part of China is position of every Chinese leader (or potential leader), or like no Ukraine in NATO was position of every Russian politician since the end of Soviet Union. There is small chance of hot conflict in Bosnia, but that's more due to bad politics of US and Eurorpe. Peace agreement is undermined by one side with impunity because they have support of EU and US as they're pro-NATO, pro-sanctions even though dependent on Russian gas etc. This leads to other side threatening secession which is unacceptable to the west, even though if Republika Srpska voted on self-determination it would be overwhelmingly in favor unlike Montenegro's 2006 independence vote that passed threshold by 0.5% and guess what? they're now in NATO and sanctioning Russia while up to recently having 30 year long dictatorship run and being still center of orginized crime and narco trafficing in Europe. Why always such one-sided outlook and reporting on this stuff?

The dilemma of being a socialist when the most public opponents of NATO's war in Ukraine are certain neocon/right wing voices was an important point of this discussion. Meanwhile our social Democrat friends have been totally engulfed in the neoliberalist world agenda. Incredible that for me, in Canada, none of my past "left" associates will speak up against the US/NATO agenda in creating the Ukraine conflict, that has been clear since at least 2007 (Putin's appeal for a European security agreement) and 2008 (US-led NATO Bucharest Declaration). My "progressive, liberal-minded friends" now seem incapable of understanding the insidious, neoliberalist international agenda.

Sorry for the rant, but.. Wish we could have a strong left in Europe where condemning both Russia's illegal invasion and all of the Western provocations that led to this war is the norm and openly spoken critique. NATO is simply a solution to a problem it itself created, just like America getting rid of the ABM-treaty in 2002 was mad, insane move that has led us into the current nuclear weapons arms race. It doesn't mean that Putin is a good guy even if he was provoked and the context is somewhat different, he's a warcriminal just like Tony Blair and George Bush.. But instead of the West even looking in the mirror and going "Oh boy, guess the russians really will not be motivated to punish their warcriminal because of our own massive hypocrisy and unpunished monsters - we better clean our own house quick!" we've set sail on a path where there's less and less meaning to the whole term of being a warcriminal. It only matters if you don't have power to protect yourself from retribution of other powerful countries that do not like you... And nuclear weapons provide a heck of a lot of protection from Hague, despite all the screams that the Western political class does. We also do not have politicians who are capable or willing to do policy that takes into account international laws reliance on the realpolitical situation giving incentives for the great powers to follow those laws. If one side abuses and breaks it while trying to force others to follow, we will end up with nobody following international law at the end. And we in the West have only given incentives for Russia to break international law... We have politicians who in my view HATE the Ukrainians, tough they profess to love them. No attempts to do diplomacy, to critique Americas hawkish, provocative NATO expansion and nuclear weapons policy. Ukraine loses hundreds of thousands of men, majority of it's economy is ruined, millions have fled the country and more land than was necessary is lost due to prolonging the war too long for them to fight against Russia. And for what reason are we doing all of this? For making Putin even more stronger than he was before and destroying the economy of Europe. I understand the logic of America crippling a possible rival that could join Russia instead of being a vassal... So our EU political class is happy enough to destroy their citizens wellbeing while we become a colony, a bunch of energy dependent impoverished and indebted vassals to USA. Meanwhile the psychology of war takes over our politics all the more. My own country, Finland, has forgotten all about diplomacy, which is expected because we've become such bootlickers of America over our EU years... But to lose all sight of humanrights and not care about international law? We've thrown the kurdish people under the bus just like we are supporting a genocide of the palestinians by preventing funding to UNRWA and by buying David's Sling from Israel. In the background we are breaking international law by completely shutting our border with Russia based on an idea of weaponized refugees. Further shame is that we shut the borders after Putin declared LGBTQ+ organizations as extremists, leading people in those organizations into danger and we do not care about them. Despite flying the rainbow flags ourselves. Our politicians talk of forgetting about rhetorically forgetting international law in order to better look after our own interests with countries that break it. Our president Alexander Stubb, who is this horrible plastic smiled lying neoliberal yes-man to America has stated that we should remove laws preventing nuclear weapons in our country. THIS is the result of joining NATO and America. Our politicians have exposed themselves to be just as much of monsters as we claim to be fighting in Putin. I assume other countries have similar problems as well. This is the madness of war, of groupthink, of seeing enemies as monsters that justify ourselves becoming monsters. The logic of George Bush's "Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists" reigning supreme. How do we get of this train as soon as possible (because too late was passed a long while ago), I don't know... But we need to do it as soon as possible.

I really cannot take these talks seriously, simply too much misconceptions. I watched several of your talks because diem is a new political option and it is made of young, politically uncontaminated people. But unfortunately, it is a disappointment, so you are not going to get my vote, regardless of me being in agreement with diem on a number of things. You neither understand the geopolitical situation or social processes or offer viable solutions, in fact, you do not offer any solutions, just critique, and its not a particularly good critique. If by some stroke of luck you would manage to get some political power, you would make things worse because of your misconceptions. Generally speaking, your opinions are simply not fact based, but rather predefined with ideological preferences. Reality is something that needs to be observed and understood, not explained thru one's own idealistic prism. This especially goes for Yanis, because others can be excused because of youth, but he should know better. Eric the political director is more concerned with his "performance" and attempts to be "cool" than anything else. Karen has a superficial view and is uninformed. The guy with head set is reiterating propaganda. In your introduction, you should not have made the assumption that Trump will win next November. What a lazy statement. You probably lost 90 percent of your audience after the first minute. Including me. Goodbye.

@@mediastudiesnetwork when you Will get to be the president of a huge and important country as Russia and will confront with what Putin had to confrunt for years with a warmongering as nato and hate for no reson after u have tried to make everything possible thru negotiations , then lets see what you Will do. Being the president of a contry involves all kinds of responsabilities including wars when and if its the case/needed, unfortunatelly. Its easy to be a critic when you are nothing. Its like those critics of literature/arts that never writes/paint anything just stay aside and critic the artist.😆 A joke of a chanell so puny and superficial. Lots of ppl from all over the world would like a leader like Mr. V Putin, instead of any other leader thats în function anywhere now. He îs the one that made the multipolar world possible , hes the one that opened up this path for others too. "Yet out of Russia comes again the hope of the world " - Edgar Cayce
