in a way you have to look at most of the studios took in my EA were on the brink of collapse anyways, from a purely business output you have to obtain them if the chance comes as Westwood, visceral etc all had massive titles at one point or another. if they came up cheap to obtain then it makes no sense not too, since you can either obtain and throw the IP's so no one can make money or you try to re establish the company under your wing which obviously didn't work either which is why they were all ceased.

Ultima Online(EAs longest living game), was a game that EA never wanted to create, and the devs pretty much had to beg EA for years to allow them to dev it. Ultima Online was the first graphical MMO, and its still more feature filled than MMOs of this day. EA got rid of the original devs of Ultima Online, a few months after release.
@carljohan92655 жыл бұрын
It is so blatantly obvious that the ONLY reason they are bank rolling indie titles is to fabricate good PR. And even then they probably wouldn't do it if it wasn't for the fact that most indie projects are cheap to pay for. You don't see that level of "generosity" for the type of games that are swiftly becoming a lost art, the so called middle shelf games (or "double A if you will) like singularity, SOMA, prototype, most of the PS 2 library etc.

I believe that specific argument is actually the Fallacy of Relative Privation: "That other thing is worse than what we do, so you shouldn't care about our misdeeds." Or alternatively "That other thing is just as bad, so this thing isn't important." Whereas in actuality, bad is bad, so of course we should care. It's not a competition, and it's impossible to fix every problem in the world, so being told not to worry about some of them is nonsense. Also, doesn't that particular defence of EA, with "I bet they have it no worse than at other companies, probably better, I bet"... sound kind of like it was written by a certain "man" who should never have been president of the United States?^^;

Black Box Games: Founded in 1999, acquired by EA in in 2002. Known for Need for Speed and Skate. Shuttered in 2013 after years of EA whittling away its studios and staff. Bullfrog Productions Limited: Founded in 1987, acquired by EA in 1995. Known for titles like Syndicate, Theme Park, and Dungeon Keeper. Rendered defunct in 2001 after merger into EA UK (Later EA Bright Light, itself shuttered in 2011.), though EA had driven off most of the top talent - including Co-Founder Peter Molyneux in 1997 - and cancelled numerous projects before then. Burst Studios: Founded in 1995 as a sister studio to Westwood, acquired by EA in 1998. It developed Nox and co-developed some of the later C&C games. Later renamed EA Pacific, it was absorbed into EALA in 2003. Headgate Studios: Founded in 1992, acquired by EA in 2006. Known mostly for its golf games before EA got their hands on it. Renamed EA Salt Lake, it developed titles for the Wii, and was later shuffled into the Maxis fold, before being shuttered in 2017. Kesmai: Founded in 1981, this pioneering game studio was best known for the Air Warrior series. Acquired by EA from Rupert Murdoch's News Corp in 1999, it was shuttered in 2001 with most of its staff being split between Lodestone Games and what would become Maxis East. Mythic Entertainment: Created in 1995 through the merger of Adventures Unlimited Software and Interesting Systems, acquired by EA in 2006, who renamed it EA Mythic. Best known for its MMOs, including Dark Age of Camelot. Shuffled around and drained of staff as part of a 2009 restructuring, it was finally shuttered in 2014. NuFX: Founded in 1990, acquired by EA in 2004. Best known for its NBA titles including NBA Live and NBA Street. EA merged it into EA Chicago upon acquisition, rendering it defunct. Origin Systems: Founded in 1980, acquired by EA in 1992. Best known for Ultima and Wing Commander. Wound down from a high of 300 employees, following Ultima IX's poor reception it was refocused towards solely providing support for Ultima Online. It was shuttered, and had its final title - Ultima X - cancelled, in 2004. Pandemic Studios: Founded in 1998, it and BioWare were acquired by EA from VG Holding Corp. in 2008. Known for titles including the original Star Wars Battlefront series and Destroy All Humans! EA shuttered Pandemic in 2009, as part of a general cut that caused 1500 EA employees to lose their jobs. Phenomic Game Development: Founded in 1997, and acquired by EA in 2006. Known for the SpellForce series, it was later made to fill the shoes of Origin and Westwood, developing a title for Ultima and Command & Conquer. Closed in 2013, resulting in the loss of 60 jobs. Playfish: Founded in 2007, and acquired by EA in 2009. A developer of FtP Social Network games, mostly developed for Facebook. By 2013, Playfish's four founders had left EA, and its titles were retired the same year, rendering them no longer playable. Visceral Games: Founded as EA Redwood Shores in 1998. Best known for Dead Space, it was in the process of developing a Star Wars title known by the codename of Project Ragtag when the game was cancelled, and Visceral shuttered, in 2017. EA CEO Andrew Wilson claims the closure was based on 'listening to feedback' and 'market trends,' but the closure is best seen as a sign of EA's waning interest in Single-Player titles. Westwood Studios: Founded in 1985, and acquired by EA in 1998. The Codifier of the RTS Genre, releasing titles including Command & Conquer and Dune II (and it's remake, Dune 2000). After C&C: Renegade and Earth & Beyond failed to meet expectations, it was merged into EALA in 2003, resulting in the layoffs of about 100 employees. @@doubledouble4g379 Not to mention, the flaky Ultima9 own it's demise to Ultima Online. Someone had made the decision to move all the staff to UO, and by the time they where brought back to U9 (3 years later) they had to recode and redo most of the game... With EA breathing down their necks. Which gave us a very short and weird game. The original plan for Ultima9 was a full game with companions, and reclaiming artefacts from older games to make the protagonist (Male or female) become the Titan of Ether and finally destroy the Guardian. I remember reading there would be dynamic storms and boat travel reminiscent of the Ultima5 days, and old artefact like the QuickSword (Ultima2), companions party and all. Ultima9 was gutted for UO, and then Origin was gutted by EA. So seeing EA like bad guys for 25 years is dead-on to me. Imagine a new Ultima Online today with agressive micros... This is the same strategy Facebook uses every time there is a data-scandal. "Oops, sorry, we will do better in the future." It could maybe be more believable if they'd publicly state HOW they plan to do better, and demonstrate those plans in motion. But that resembles accountability. You actually have to demonstrably do better and KEEP DOING BETTER. And fat chance of that.
@talynhastime93435 жыл бұрын
There is no accountability for these corporations, or very little. Because it interferes with 'business'. Business today is based on the idea that 'a person will act in their best self-interest, which is getting people to like them, so they will behave. Those that don't get the message will be left in the dust. This means everyone else benefits either way." But that 'selfishness is good' idea is an overall big picture sort of thing. It doesn't really feel good to wish for a company to die. Why wish for it to flounder and waste all of that manpower and capital and resources when we should be able to slap them upside the head and scream "GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR ASS". Yes, some people will never get it and they shouldn't be pulled out of the quicksand every time, but they should also not be able to trample everything--the resources, the brilliant minds, the licenses--while they're in their spiraling death throes. A company can kill creativity and ambition, but a failed company doesn't necessarily mean that that same creativity will be resurrected in another place. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but it's not like employees can take their projects to another place and continue to work on them. The licenses are not owned by the coders and shaders and script writers who put hours upon hours into making a game for us, a game they want to see in the stores so they can actually get rewarded for their labor. I feel for these people so much.

He's not saying anything that wasn't said 4 years ago during a certain consumer revolt about how bullshit and pro-corporate games journalism was that Jim publicly derided as a batch of racists and misogynists just because some of the most blatantly pro-corporate shill games journos happen to be women.

I think hardly anything grinds my gears more than philanthropism in modern day capitalism. Being philanthropic is something you do AFTER you have fulfilled your duties to society, paid your taxes, created a pleasent work environment for your employees and delivered experiences without exploiting tendencies towards addiction. It is NOT a way to buy goodwill, as that is something one cannot buy. It is something you earn through your actions as a whole not by performing some good philanthropic acts. You don't get to buy off your "mistakes", I am sure Jim will remind you of that. Thank you Jim for the great work you're doing.
