In HL, Unreal and Quake, you could customize your look and all the guns were lying around and you can enjoy the game. Today, in the upcoming CoD:MW game, you have to level up to unlock the guns, than level the guns so you can unlock the gun customization etc. And the weird part is, if everything is unlocked and you can customize your loadout however you want, people complains because "there is no progression".

I was so furious when Microsoft started doing this with Microsoft Office. Instead of having a complete suite of programs included when I bought a new computer, I suddenly had a yearly subscription that I had to keep paying for, or else lose access to Word and Excel. For personal use I was able to transition to freeware like OpenOffice. But - surprise, surprise! - those files aren't compatible with Microsoft's. Meaning if it's anything important, I have to either shell out for the Microsoft version at home or sneak in some unauthorized time at the desk job I'm lucky enough to have. This change went over so well in the business world and made them so much goddamn money that they decided to replicate it in the game world. It's absolute bullshit that lowers the usefulness of the product while making it cost a lot more.

you wanna know the funny thing? That open format LibreOffice and OpenOffice (as well as other office suits) use was introduced by microsoft. As a developer, I love their dev tools and azure etc. As a consumer, I absolute hate microsoft, almost as much as I hate EA.

In recent years Libre has made huge strides in MS office compatibility. Not perfect, but leagues ahead of openoffice.

@Jack _ The RAM issues came later, as Valve added more actual functionality to TF2, the game required more RAM than the 360 could have handled without substantial optimization. But this was much later, Valve had been saying they'd bring class updates to the XBox for a while, but ultimately canceled. A big reason for that was that the community for TF2 on XBox was dwindling more and more by that point, and Steam was starting to take off. TF2 was also an older game, and didn't require as high end a computer to run than it did at launch. But Microsoft's policy of charging developers for updates was a thing too, and that couldn't have helped. If I recall, they allowed a few small updates for free, after that they charged the developer. To "Ensure quality was maintained." I'm guessing that the size of a proposed console update to TF2 was considered too expensive to be worth it to Valve.

So day one dlc is not necessarily something that was cut from the game (sometimes it is, but far from always), but often something team made only after base game was finalized. Though with absolute state the games are released in this day and age, most of that time is spent making day-one patch

Instead we get minimum viable product AAA games and small budget indie. Because AAA buys out all the good mid-tier developers all we have left are massive budget homogenisations and small budget indie. No creative mid-tiers trying new things and working on something their are passionate about. Indie games are great, but the can only do so much with the resources they have. The Jimquisition is a really interesting stylistic beast. In many ways it’s still got the DNA of the ‘rant’ style reviews of the early 2010s (albeit better written). As the show’s gone on it has embraced a series of running goofs and an overall linguistic flourish that’s given it its character. However this episode has definitely shown more of a video essay leaning, in terms of its structure being deliberately delineated, a focus on contextualising the issue. But tonally it’s still very much the Jimquisition. I wonder if the Jimquisition as it goes on will be closer in tone to a more standard video essay? I don’t think so, but it’s interesting to see the evolution of the show.

the difference between TF2 and what`s happening today is that everything in the crates of TF2 were (and maybe still are today... haven't played in like 3 years) ONLY cosmetic. And today you'll notice most gamers don't care about cosmetic microtransactions .... they do complain however about using microtransaction to level up faster and thus get better guns or abilities or wtv than others playing the same game; or about simply getting better items directly by paying.

I'm surprised how you didn't mention how Xbox has been gearing (pun intended) towards live services for games for years now. It's no secret that Xbox is proud of Xbox Live service and how they're focusing on it in the coming years, specifically in the next generation. Leaks and rumours have been going around how the next Xbox will not include a DVD/Blu-Ray drive. And I bet they only changed their plans when they heard the public backlash that rumour had gotten. Xbox is not humble with their live service and they will continue to push for games-as-a-service model. I have a feeling it's always been their original plan to do that. Deprive their consumers control of their games just so we wouldn't have too much fun.

You know, that's pretty much what I think about any rumors or leaks like this. If it was something they didn't want to be heard, they would go after the journalists with legal action or at least attempt to discredit their record. We've seen that plain as day in the past. But when leaks like this happen and the company doesn't make a peep, I'm almost completely convinced at this point that it's basically them testing the public response before they announce and/or launch anything. Especially when the rumors are so early and given what happened to Microsoft this generation with Xbox One.

I can get purchasing good DLC for a game that was great in it's vanilla state and simply added something more that perhaps wasn't possible in the initial stages of development, like Fallout New Vegas and The Witcher 3. I've always had this feeling in my gut that Microsoft didn't really understand players and the concept of being a platform holder throughout the years. Sure, it might have been slightly biased by the fact I was born and raised on Sony and Nintendo consoles ever since the day my cousin gave me his old NES with a Super Mario Bros and Duck Hunt double cartridge and I found a shiny new PS One under the Christmas tree the following year, but the Xbox always felt to me like a bland and uninteresting platform, with very few interesting games that seemed to just be happy and copy their rivals (I mean, Blinx the Time Sweeper tried to be Sonic when the world was kinda getting sick of Sonic). The last 7 years or so seemed to have proven me right - from the lackluster final years of the Xbox 360 where Microsoft seemed to be more interested in turning the console into yet another version of a cable box that just so happens to be able to play games to the sequence of disasters that was the Xbox One. And I swear to god, aside from a couple of launch commercials all the way back in 2013, I have never seen any advertising for Xbox One games or for the console, only seeing the console's logo at the end of unrelated third-party multi-platform title commercials. It may seem like a small thing, but it really helps to give the feeling that Microsoft barely even knows they're platform holders and not just a company that just so happens to publish games on the console every once in a while.

Finally someone noticed the micro-transactions plaguing the Xbox One launch games. It would have been nice to notice at launch and warn the consumers in time before they spent their hard earned cash on the vastly inferior console.

e efilysp launch was what, 5 years ago? Don't like microtransactions then don't buy them. Simple. Look at the top performing games currently released. Literally only 1 has no microtransactions.

Naaah, Steam can't do wrong... Even though for years Jim made a living out of showing that Valve do wrong a hell of a lot... I blame Microsoft for Playstation charging for their online service... How dare they have better servers and charge Sony to use them! Azure should be free. I also blame Microsoft for the Epic store - everything should only ever be on Steam as we need to protect their monopoly like it is Woolworths in the UK. I blame Microsoft for No Mans Sky... And finally, I blame Microsoft for people voting for Trump and blame them for the world not loving the extreme left! If it weren't for them AOC would rule, we would have a socialist government and the Jewish people would be put into Gul... Oh shit. There I go again. Making the link between the German Socialist Workers Party (Nazis) and Modern Socialist Workers Parties (Labour and Democrats) ....

The moment Microsoft lowered the toll booth arm on peer-to-peer connections and raised that paywall to separate customers that pay a monthly ransom for literally nothing from those that didn't, the industry was started down the road to perdition. Games as a Services, Micro-Transactions, Always-Online Single-Player Games, Season Passes & Incomplete Games gutted and sold back piecemeal to customers, and mobile phone business models infused into $60+ USD titles, can all be tied back to that moment in gaming history. Now, games are highly disposable, mostly homogenous and creatively stagnant, and consoles have become rental terminals that will eventually refuse to grant customers access to the games they paid a $60+ rental fee for. This is why I prefer retro games on emulators and pre-Xbox Live! games on older consoles. I'm done paying increasingly escalating costs to play the same handful of games I've been playing for the last 20+ years with new coats paint.

Microsoft is definitely a mixed bag. I totally recall all the bull shit microtransactions that they had at release, and still have in many of their games. With that said, a lot of their games also don't have many if any microtransactions. You are right Jim, they have also done a LOT of good pro-consumer moves this gen, like bringing back compatibility, accessibility, and others. They really are a mixed bag in several ways.

All the console companies are mixed bags TBH. Remember that time Nintendo decided to not allow savegame backups and then made you pay for cloud ""backups"" (which likely be lost when the service shuts down at some point)? Actually I can't come up with anything Sony-related right now, but that's likely more because I don't care. I guess there was that time when they censored some anime boobs and weirdos didn't like it? idk. But PC is mixed too, these days. Weird elitists have convinced/scared everyone that you should never buy a prebuilt (and instead build your own with 2000$ parts) and Win 10 (also a Microsoft product, oddly enough...) is basically malware and most people don't know how to install and/or use old Windowses or Linux.... tl:dr; old good new bad

@Arbeta10000
@Arbeta10000 5 жыл бұрын
Dyllyo Can't tell if that's sarcasm, a joke or w/e but I guess I'll go ahead and ruin it if it is by explaining anyways: Money is earned, cosmetics is what's bought. "earned" implies that the thing has to be worked for. Since you've already got the money if you intend on spending it on cosmetics, you're not actually working to earn the cosmetics. If you happen to be short on money, you're still not working to earn the cosmetics; You're working to earn the money. The language that they use (*earn* cosmetics by buying them with money) is very slimy. I'm sure the implications should be obvious there.
