I think one of the biggest shames is that the fantastic Kylotonn games and their brilliant stages have now just been forgotten and were ignored by so many of the racing playerbase at the time.

Yep. Once the kinks got worked out of generations, it is fantastic, and scales equally well to full rigs (motion, gforces, wind, dashes, triples, 4K). I wondered whether EA Rally meant I would have two rally games to play. Not at this point!

.. the kinks never got worked out of generations though?? I raised hell on twitter and reddit like many others regarding: 1. throttle bug (unresponsive and 0 throttle below 30-40% pedal/trigger actuation) 2. clutch does not actuate unless held for 1-2 seconds on controller 3. rain braking is BAD. rain stages look downright TERRIBLE (no transparency in rain, appears shiny/white) 4. boost bug, nuff said 5. disgraceful sound design ( engines/gravel effects) 6. Button mapping/audio settings reset (controller/wheel presets reset constantly too) ps5 Many Many people have complained about these issues and you know what they did? They pulled the plug on supporting the game after like a year of bullshit updates. The gameplay was fun, but all the bugs I ran into genuinely ruined my experience. I particularly enjoy time trial leaderboards which were unreliable at best given the bugs mentioned above. Lost allllll my hope in the devs of generations. wrc 23 is muchhhhhh better so far. @@netlawman2001

I totally agree… the stages in WRC Generations are just so much more fun and not monotonous. The handling model in WRC Generations might not be what some people would say is “realistic”, but you really felt like you were making the car dance around the bends… and the single player career mode was good and engaging too. I also feel like we’ve lost out… it would’ve been better to keep Kyloton on the WRC licence, and then had Dirt Rally 3.0 (this game) as an alternative…

Aside from the performance and stuttering, the biggest problem for me is there is just too much tyre grip. In hairpins and tight turns the gravel feels like slightly slippy tarmac. You can break the rear end grip but it very aggressively regains grip again, there isn’t enough progression in the loss and re-acquisition of grip.
@socks2441
@socks2441 Жыл бұрын
exactly. ironically its the equal but opposite problem dirt rally 2.0 had. i feel like the physics for that were designed for gravel then adapted for tarmac, and for this game they were designed for tarmac then adapted for gravel. since the most exciting and differentiating thing about rally is sliding around on gravel, i will take the former over the latter anyday.

To add to that, the handbrake behavior is very strange. No pendulum effect, just like DR2 but even worst cuz of high grip levels.

Hmmm... maybe learn to drive then??? Or maybe learn to tune a rally car to be aggressive and to oversteer and powerslide it??? You know... maybe in a realistic rally game you should drive realistically like a rally car should be driven??? Just saying... cause unlike every dumbass in this comment sections I do know how to drive a rally car and I do powerslide my car any time I want and it doesn't regain grip until I want it to... hmmm... maybe I'm special??? Oh wait... I know how to tune and fucking DRIVE the car to do all those things... do the words THROTTLE MANAGEMENT and WHEEL MANAGEMENT in a hairpin turn mean ANYTHING to you??? people complain about everything and don't bother to think if they're doing things right or not... stupidity knows no boundaries in 2023...

Its noticeable on so many instances through the video its honestly hard to watch. Not just the grip, but the inertia of the car is all wrong, sliding of the gravel track going 140 and car is dropping speed faster than an F1 car would with slicks on pure racetrack. Awful.

I think its a disgrace that the state of modern sim racing games are at in 2023 when surely they know that most sim racers are now spending thousands on racing equipment to play these games.. Looking at the last sim exbo the equipment thats out and been out and due out is lightyears ahead of most iff all racing titles... Im shocked that codemasters/ EA have taken the easy way and ripped us off knowing were all sim racing junkies and sold us mario cart disguised as dirt rally.... Thank you. After 4 hours on a really high end system, I wondered why do many reviews portray a different (I.e. glowing) experience. Sound aside, and ignoring issues like stuttering that will get fixed, the design is dismal. I second all your observations. I would add that they picked “dusty tan” as the color of all road surfaces - tarmac or dirt or gravel, new or old road. In addition the environment feels like a 3D computer graphics model mated with a water color painting from the 1800’s. We have the haze that prevails everywhere and under almost all weather conditions and time of day. It took a while for the kinks to get worked out of WRCG, but other than for multi-player and sound, WRCG is far more immersive, fun, exciting, and detailed.

Yes, even just looking at videos, the tracks have a very different feel and look to them then the ones from Kylotonn. The tracks from Kyloton felt real, diverse, alive and just more pleasing. With this game, you can easily see the repitition of the assets. And with rally games, it's all about the tracks and their environments.

I don't always agree with you, GM, but this time we are in complete agreement. It looks worse, plays worse, and performs worse than DR2.0, and is quite frankly a disappointment. Also what has been highlighted to me through other WRC reviews from the "simfluencer" populous, is that they appear to be more interested in keeping those pre-release keys flowing rather than actually doing their job and telling us the truth.

unpopular opinion, DR2.0 stages were abysmal, bland and soulless... but the graphical fidelity and effects pulled it through. this has better stages than DR2.0, but far worse stages than WRC Generations. Kt racing nailed stages, codemasters with all their money and prowess and even with this license cant seem to pull a decent one out of their ass. and now, ea sports wrc has the most flat, boring, blurry graphics i've seen in a racing game in 10 years and its very obvious how bad these stages suck. yes the game stutters, but that can be patched in, my problem is that the game is fundamentally worse than the last 4 rally games i've played in every single possible way. EA crunch, and deadlines fucked this game. Hopefully they afford codemasters the time they need to pull this one through, because as of right now... it's FUCKING EMBARRASSING. 2024 is a fucking month away.

I've been off road racing for over a decade now. I started when I was 12. We don't do rally but it's very similar in a lot of ways. We race around closed off roads through the forests and some street circuits. My current weapon of choice is a Subaru BRZ rwd but I think calling it a Subaru at this point is a stretch lmao. Before then I raced an awd dodge challenger that I unfortunately wrapped around a tree mid race. I only bring all that up because I feel like folks in the racing community like to know your experience before giving your opinions. With that being said the first thing I noticed about this game is how authentic the handling feels. It feels like the tires actually bite into the gravel and I'm not sliding around on ice. In real life you have significantly more grip than you think and sliding through corners is an advanced technique that takes years of practice. That snapping forward thing you're talking about is a real life thing. Cars aren't meant to slide. The aero dynamics of the car want to make it go straight. If you counter steer too hard in a slide you'll snap forward. Especially in gravel and pavement. The opposite of that is if you over steer you'll loose the rear end. You need to find the sweet spot to hold the slide and counter steer when you want to straighten out. The reason this feels weird to you is because dr1 and 2 feel like the tires do absolutely nothing and slide over the gravel like it's ice. In this game I use genuine racing techniques. In dirt rally I can just throw the car around like it means nothing. Also the handbrake in this game feels very realistic. Whenever you full on lock your wheels your car instantly becomes un predictable. You should avoid using it at all times. Relying on it is a sign of an amateur driver. Hand brake turning is also slowing 9 times outta 10 than flowing through the corner. Drifting is for showing off, sliding is for racing. Other than the performance of the game being shit at launch, I'd say everything else you bring up is matter of opinion. But thats just the nature of a game review. If you wanna play a fun video game then go for dirt rally games. If you want to play an authentic off road game then play this....or beam ng 😁

The best word that sums it up for me is “safe”. To a ridiculous degree. They were so focused on “not alienating potential customers” they forgot to make a good game. Imagine Burns had had that attitude! RBR would have been pointless trash, but with risk taking and NOT compromising, Warthog made a masterpiece. Yes, EA WRC is hyper safe and Corporate. Without a doubt.

Totally agree with the snapness while drifting or handbraking. The surface of the stages are worse than DR 2.0 but better than WRC Generations, it should be like real surfaces according to John Amstrong. And I am also missing the random events, I wanna see DNF cars and all other stuff from DR 2.0. I'm having fun, but at the moment it needs a lot or patches. I believe the titel is launched sooner than it supposed to due license and contract with the WRC Promoter or something.

This is the first review which doesn't seem to be sponsored by EA. Despite being an RBR modder (creating stages), I understand arcade / simcade games have their place on the market, so I am not going to hate it for how simplified it is in many ways. But as one who have some idea about what's possible with the current hw & sw, I find ridiculous how such big companies with all that budget and years of development can produce such indie-like game, with basic flaws like non movable traffic signs... The release was either super rushed, or they simply didn't care because they knew people will buy it anyway thanks to that ridiculous amount of sponsored reviews and the fact it's gonna be the only modern rally game for some time.

Which basically means it's only downhill from here. This is what monopoly will always be, when you have no competition you can produce shit and rake in money anyway. My biggest gripe is that the stages are just boring. Like, every once in a while you'll go through a small town or something, and it's like cool, but then you go back to the barren wastelands that is Codemaster stage design. The attention to detail just isn't there. There is no character to these stages and the immersion factor is low. The level of detail at @20:37 for that section of the Japan stage is how the whole game should have been. So just like the AI, the quality consistency is all over the place. I honestly had the feeling this would be state of the game pre launch when I saw the price tag. Not even a full price game tells me they didn't even have much hope in it or that theyre gonna rely on microtransactions in the future. Edit: I posted this comment right before you got to the stage design and yes, I agree lmao

I do agree the tracks look artificial. There is a huge difference between track and non track. And that they don't look like the location they are supposed to. I am really disappointed by 1) the lack of innovation for the rallying. Yes, we get a car builder that seems awesome, but the races feel really dated. No random events, no unexpected failures, animals crossing (kenya is a waste for that!), super boring co pilot... 2) How can they mess up difficulty in a rally game so often??? WRC 10 was terrible, V-rally 4 the same, and this one the same :/

I did notice that all the footage shown in the video is from driving in time trial mode or playing another mode with very light surface degradation. Is that correct? When you go into quick play solo (or championship or some others) and select your stage etc. there, you also have the option to chose the level of degradation you want. If you do that and set it to maximum, it just transforms the stages and it really becomes a lot more enjoyable to drive.

@@GamerMuscleVideos Have you had a gravel stage where the surface degradation is on maximum by any chance? Hope you don't mind me adding a bit more in regards to the handling itself. I think the physics are in a good place generally speaking. WAIT! Continue reading please. Haha There are two elements though I'd like them to work on more. The suspension for cars that aren't Rally3, Rally2 or Rally1 is a bit too forgiving. The other thing is what you mentioned as well where you start sliding the car but it then regains grip very quickly/aggressively. That's something which is really noticeable on tarmac (at least for me). You can work around it to a certain degree with the setup of the car such as adjusting the diffs in order to not make the rear end break out so abruptly. However, in a RWD car especially, but also FWD ones, it's not possible to have that natural throttle controlled slide. That's primarily down to the way torque based slip works in the game. I've actually discussed this in particular with Jon Armstrong, the ERC3 champion that's also a game developer for this title as you are aware of. If they can sort out the suspension in general, especially for the older cars, and the torque based slip issues on tarmac, I think the physics would be pretty spot on. Gravel to me feels really good, especially when the surface deg is set at maximum and tarmac is OK but mainly needs adjustments in the torque based slip department.

In short... I concur. It's the first time I've pre-ordered a game, as I felt it was reasonably priced for an upgraded & modernisised Dirt Rally 2.0, with official WRC content, but wow, this EA WRC game is a major disappointmen! The extremely poor performance & graphics are shocking in 2023. I can't see how the poor UX with navigation & input bugs got passed devs or even soulless marketeers. It's clearly been designed by committee, and not for even mildly interested rally/motorsports fans. I can see this title being slashed to €20 in early 2024... and it maybe will be worth it then. I never rated the "opinions" of content-creators too highly before, but the pre-release content from other mainstream youtubers for this game is another nail in the coffin for impartial commentary and credibility. You are, of course, right about everything GM. The one great thing about the game is it's £40. That papers over a lot of cracks for me. BUT ... Things that annoy me - many sections of landscapes look like they're from a 15 year old game - a hillside with trees looking like they're a placeholder rough cut and paste first attempt they forgot to go back and finish. The over exposure of the roads as seen from inside the car is staggeringly bad. Why is there no option where you could drive any stage at different times of the day instead of the time trial midday fixed option when the stark lighting shows up the shoddy graphics in places? I don't get a real sense of place from any of the tracks, there are not enough random visual elements on stages as there would be in real life - it all seems be to a formula, like the stages were procedurally generated by a non creative AI. I do enjoy the game somewhat, but all the time I'm thinking about the sub-par handling, the "unfinished" graphics in some stages and the poor optimisation. Please Codemasters can you finish the game soon and patch the hell out of it, you could so easily have had the best rally game ever on your hands, you still can with a little polish, care and professionalism.

I think a lot of the performance problems with EA Sports WRC are down to the dev team moving to Unreal engine and not fully understanding how to get the best performance out of it. I can't help but feel that they would have made a better looking game with a more stable frame rate if they'd stuck to using the Ego engine.

They changed because with Unreal, they could create longer tracks. I actually wonder if they did have to switch anyway, why not immediatly go with Unreal Engine 5 instead of 4. I'm creating a car game myself with Unreal Engine, and the car physics from UE4 and UE5 are very different to set up. I just skipped UE4 and am going with UE5 as that's the way forward for things.

Just one 30km stage per country, two if you count reverse. So I rather have this game running on ego engine and stages long as 12 or 15km. Because that you only have two unique stages per country, one 30km and one 12km. Then they are driven reverse, spliteted in halv and again driven reverse so thats why you get 12 stages per country

Couldn't agree with you more on track surface. 'thought'...? They're all real stages, both DR2.0 and WRC. There is no 'thought', it's pure mapping. Yes, DR2.0 has more detailed stages, but they did not look at all like the actual location. Colour grading was all off especially. NZ is one of the poorer locations in EA WRC, passable... but feels rushed. You're having a laugh otherwise though, the EA WRC stages are 100x better than Dirt Rally boring flat stages. We had so few locations at launch, then just got remasters. Mexico, Portugal, Chile, Indonesia, Kenya, Italy, Corsica... all great. Snow locations are great. There are a few underwhelming ones like NZ, Estonia, Croatia. None of them are BAD, they're all real stages but need more stage dressing and foliage/tree detail.

First true review of this game I’ve seen so far! From my own experience I find that you truly nailed it, both the pros and the cons. As for the performance issues (as also experienced by me on the PS5), they are not that different from Dirt 2 at launch. It took Codemasters a couple of months to fix them so hopefully they’ll work on it for this title also. I can honestly say that 30 minutes of rally Kenya gave me a serious headache! What I find amazing is that Gran Tourism 7 run on the PS4 with amazing graphics, no stutter and no game breaking frame-rate drops while Codemasters doesn’t manage to get the game running smoothly on the PS5 even with subpar graphics!

@@rowlandjohnvanderwesthuize2164 yeah you're exactly right... I knew something was up when each of those BS "preview" videos started with "sponsored by EA" screen that not one of those youtubers suspiciously mentioned. Some even went as far as to say the are absolutely not paid, yeah right. One party gets early access code and tons of views and publicity, other party gets heaps of hype and skewed "previews" into positive, if at all, barely mentioning ANY negatives, like glaring stuttering, and people believe no money is being moved? . I have been so puzzled by so conflicting reactions all over social media that I watched hours upon hours of gameplay and "reviews" and yeah it's dull. Dirt rally didn't have much to offer in terms of single player, nor did KT WRC, but both, while very different, managed one thing most of times at least: physics, not perfect, visuals neither, nor physics - but driving and mastering it was ultimately fun and rewarding. Here it looks so way off. Like was said here, all cars look to be driving like modern rally1... Also codemasters getting rid of dailies, weeklies and monthlies and just leaving it all to players to create and join Clubs to create their own experience OUTSIDE of the game is so lazy I cant actually believe it. And again, as was said here in the review, ALL gravel roads look nearly identical, what the hell is up with that... Let alone its pristine look, the gravel road from country to country does not even have a different colour. Same with sky, with foilage, with distant views, from Kenya, through Sardinia, Greece, Spain, Estonia, Finland, Chile, just everything is the same colour. Stages are lifeless. There are quite a few runs through or near towns and villages, there should be big crowds, especially since we're talking about a supposedly officially licensed WRC product - they're so out of touch with the actual modern world that they dont even care about presenting their product as popular with fans on virtual stages... From codemasters being their usual (some things great, some things questionable at least), here comes ea and fia wrc to push the game into new engine and rush it to release. I'm so glad I've grown up into being financially reponsible in gaming spending and not thown my money into this.

Yeah i agree, the single player campaign is actually much worse than dirt rally 2 or WRC 10, its basically no point to it at all. Also the driving its self is a step down i feel from dirt rally 2, its just easier now while still being unrealistic. Also even on the hardest setting its easy to pull out minute long leads on a single long stage. They needed to have better dynamic opponent times based on your skill. Its a wasted opportunity if they just spent some time makeing a good single player experience the game would have been very good, as it is now it doesn't really give you a reason too want to play it after the first 5 hours.

All what you said to the ‚wheird‘ physics is correct in the part of the tarmac physics, but couldn’t agree for the gravel physics. Absolute great are the gravel physics of the for excample old Group B RWD cars, that I drove for 90% in the game. Couldn’t get enough from driving them! You have to get deep into the gravel physic’s. They are brilliant, I am sure most people who said that the gravel physic’s are wheird, ugly, Arcady and so on aren’t going deep enough to them or aren’t able to get so deep as needed, not deep enough to feel the fine details, especially at the limits. For me these (gravel physics) are the greatest physics I have ever experienced in my over 20years of doing Ralley sims, and I play every title, at least for a few ours, others over 500ours, that comes out to pc. The gravel stages, for excample Kenia, Pacifico, Ociano, Greece, Finnland, Mexico, Sardegna, Estonia and Chile are soooo different in every kind and aspect, all of these have an absolute different feel, different Grip level, different lay out and are all a very big challenge to drive at least if you will bev fast there to come to the limits of stage/car combination. And for me they are also the most realistic ones I drove so far. Also the FFB on gravel is the best one I could experience in an Ralley title so far if you go deep with all their settings to set it as you need and like it, which takes me over 2 ours, but then the FFB is pure perfect with a lot of fine information and all information you need to be fast👍👌… On the other side Tarmac: The tarmac physics are not the best ones, way to grippy with rail feeling and so on… The stage design of a few tarmac stages for excample Croatia are soo boring, the stages there are so wide with thousands of same curves everywhere the same grip level and the same tarmac structure, absolute smooth tarmac as black ice, no bumps or things like that. Sooo boring… KI is also very broken, but carrier isn’t the most important thing for me. To be honest never testet carrier after over 30ours in the game… The actual performance is also a big problem cause of the stutters, but only one per stage for me, when I drove it second time I mostly don’t have any one. On the other side it runs fine with an very old PC with an vintage I 7700k (which is two generations under the minimum specs!) in combination with an new great RTX 4080 I have round 80FPS most settings on ultra on 3440*1440. If there are performance problems for you, set off mirrors (you don’t need them in Ralley) and set the reflections to the lowest(you wouldn’t see an difference while driving) and for sure, you will have at least round 20fps more with only by changing these two settings. Overall: For me it is the best (GRAVEL!!!) Ralley game ever released on PC. I am really in love with it and I am shure I will play it over 1000ours👍👌😍- on gravel !!! Please try it yourself! It is amazing!! All reviews are going from hate to glory…. You have to test it on your own… These are my 2 Cent to an Sim, I have ever waited for. Now Codis, please try to make an really nice tarmac Ralley Sim for us… (sorry for my ugly English - I am from Germany…)

i totaly agree with your review. i have some other things that should have been noted up. that is bad. - inconistent co driver in reading phase notes, even on the earliest is not enough. - Phase notes are maybe about 20% or more missing. the importance of the notes when it matter the most, maybe half or more is missing. or wrong. on a 3 left in monaco, co driver says "slight left" in a high speed, where the turn is a 3. maybe even tightens. there have also been some miss information where it can be confucing. like Left over Jump" but does not mention whats comes fast right after the jump. that happened in sweden, keep left and keep right or even keep middle, is missing alot when it matters the most. another note for example, i dondt remember stage or country, but there were almost same as sweden over the jump, but this was a "right over crest" so i tested to stay right over crest, but about 5 meters or less after crest, there was 1 right. and that was said after passing the crest. so thrust issues to the co driver is 0% in my end. - sometimes, the co-driver is hardly heard, and have to tune that sound at max, and tune down everything else of sound. to be able to catch a few notes, and due to its inconsistent reading then co driver starts "mumbling" where notes hardly with clear voice being heard. dondt know much about it. other than that you covered up alot what i totaly agree with you.

It feels like the stages are too cramped together so there is almost never a real flow I feel. just one tight turn after another

I wish they implement a multiplayer mode like it was in CMR04 and CMR05 when you raced in real time against your opponent ghost. It keep the pressure on , you couldn't interfere with your friend run , and had the impression to race against someone and the clock

Yah also RBR had this as a mod was so fun and put pressure on 🤣. Sadly rally games are in the dumps right now.

I'm not sure if it's because I didn't set up my PS5 keybinds properly for PC, but I can't reverse out of a wrong turn or a minor crash.

I agree with almost all the points here, finally a truly unbiased review. I just don't agree with the force feedback bit, it's so vague and muted that it's not very helpful or realistic feeling, at least in my experience. The tracks are varied but feel kinda empty and barren. Regarding the driving physics, I think it improved over DR2 but still far from realistic and the handbrake reactions are just plain weird. RBR is still the rally sim king, even after 20 years.

Spot on review, same issues on console except I've not had any crashes. Quite a lot of screen tearing as well. Hopefully they'll patch it along the way. Somewhere in here is a good game I think.

Game crashes in the menus, or within a couple of minutes of starting, with an RTX3090 i9 10850k. Essential unplayable for me at the moment, even on the very lowest settings

Fully agree with this review & I’m a bit annoyed the majority of other reviews didn’t bring up the same points as yours. I’ve put it on the back burner for now until they put a few patches out. Back to AMS2 & GT7 for me in the meantime

I can't say I'm feeling what you are with the physics. I'm able to get a nice flow going, and I've yet to touch any tuning whatsoever. Maybe there is some hidden assist still bugged on? One thing I definitely agree with is that my standards have been lowered in recent years. Actually having functional single player and friend's only endgame is such a breath of fresh air I'm willing to overlook a lot of faults. I'm just so sick of racing games perpetually funneling me into open matchmaking multiplayer, while stifling single player and friend's only elements. I mean just look at Forza Motorsport, with it's CarPG and joke AI. Why did they have to so thoroughly ruin the single player and friend's only experience?

I was suspicious when every review was being positive and the only negative thing they would mention is the stutter problem which is a very safe criticism. Btw I bet they will probably add Rallycross as a DLC later on.

I agree. On PS5 it looks quite soft and blurry. Road surfaces and materials seem to be lacking detail, maybe it is bump mapping or an anisotropic filtering issue, but they look bland. It seems the internal rendering resolution is low. Some assets look very low poly and generally it has a lack of polish. This, combined with poor performance is bizarre. The actual handing, FFB, and driving can be quite fun, but as someone with a full rig, with dashboards, wind, and transducers, having no UDP is a big miss. Having no support for Moza wheels is utterly bizarre. The audio is excellent, but on the whole it feels like either the devs don’t have enough experience with Unreal engine to optimise it properly, or it has been rushed out. Very disappointing and in several ways it does feel like a side or downgrade from previous titles. I also really enjoyed rallycross in DR 2.0, so it is sad not to see that.
