This is a Dyess AFB "DY" Bone from Abilene, TX. I was 10 when the first B-1B was delivered to the USAF at Dyess in 1985. In the almost four decades since, it's become a normal daily occurrence for the afterburners to shake the entire metro area. I'm sure our friends in Rapid City, SD, (Ellsworth AFB) can relate!

Sometimes the enemy only took to caves when one of these buzzed them in the mountains. The earth itself shakes when one of these birds buzzed you. Mustve been a respite for the boys on the ground. And the ordnance was heavy if a second pass was needed. But the B1 is so powerful it rarely took a second pass. One and the message was received. The noise is one they learned quickly. Like several EF5 dropping on you. These birds don't play and they learned. But you can't hear them until they're overhead

I'm not buying the top speed of this aircraft is only Mach 1.25. Engine intake design problems is such a lame excuse considering they have had how many decades to fix that problem? From the blended fuselage and swing-wing design to the four afterburning turbofan engines, to have a top speed barely above supersonic would be a huge waste of taxpayer dollars and I don't think that is the case here.

@fallinginthed33p3 ай бұрын
The original B-1 design went over Mach 2 at high altitudes. I think they limited the top speed at high altitude for the B-1B to get more speed at very low altitudes. We're lucky to even get to see this beast, the program was cancelled and then restarted under different requirements.

The GE F101 has a specific fuel consumption of 2.46 pounds per hour per pound-foot of thrust at full afterburner. At full afterburner, 30780 lbf of thrust is generated, meaning that with four F101s at full power, approximately 303,000 pounds of fuel will be used an hour, or equivalently, 84.1 lb/sec. As of June 1, 2024, the DLA price listed for JP-8 is $4.92/gallon. One gallon of JP-8 weighs about 6.8 pounds (varies depending on temperature) and the effective cost is $0.72/pound. The specific fuel cost is therefore roughly $60/second. This doesn't factor in other costs in terms of maintenance, materials, or labor.
