I tossed in a Prosperous Inkeeper from AFR. Its a 1 colorless 1 green 1/1 Halfling Citizen so it doesn't overlap with anything. When it comes into play you get a Treasure token and It also has the effect "Whenever another creature enters the battlefield under your control, you gain 1 life. So if you have Volo out, and get 2 of these, any other creature entry that gets you a Volo trigger will net you 4 life. Not to mention on the intial cast you basically get it for free and net 1 life. Huge value. Also mulling replacing one of the elf/druids with Circle of Dreams Druid which is a 3 green 2/1 with Tap: Add green for each creature you control. Not sure on that one though as it doesnt create a permanent land but could get nutty real quick.

Great deck, I love the inclusion of mutate creatures! However as other have pointed out i think the interaction with evoke doesn't work as you said, since you copy the spell itself and not the creature. Verazol is a commander similar to Volo, as it also allows to copy permanent spells but only if kicked, and its rule page states that the copy will also be kicked, so i guess the rule that applies to additional costs also applies to alternative costs. However this means that some kicker creature are also a great inclusion in volo! My suggestions are: - Thieving skydiver for 1U + X that allows to steal artifacts with cmc X or less - Mold shambler for 3G + 1G to destroy non-creature permanents - Wolfbriar elemental for 2GG multikicker G to create tons of wolves - Sphinx of lost truths for 3UU + 1U to draw 3x2 cards Finally these are not as budget, but you can add Twinning staff, Strionic resonator and Lithoform engine to get even more copies!

this is correct, 702.74a Evoke represents two abilities: a static ability that functions in any zone from which the card with evoke can be cast and a triggered ability that functions on the battlefield. “Evoke [cost]” means “You may cast this card by paying [cost] rather than paying its mana cost” and “When this permanent enters the battlefield, if its evoke cost was paid, its controller sacrifices it.” Casting a spell for its evoke cost follows the rules for paying alternative costs in rules 601.2b and 601.2f-h.

I still don't understand how you get 3 mutate triggers the way Mitch explained it. You get the mutate for the copy, and you get the original mutate. Where the hell does the 3rd mutate trigger come from? Is he talking about putting the mutate creature onto a creature that already had mutate on the battlefield? I'm seriously confused and don't know how everyone else seems to understand it or must just be taking Mitch's word that it works that way. I'm not saying that Mitch is wrong either. Just that his explanation didn't make it any clearer to me. I want to be able to explain it to my opponents when they ask how the hell I'm getting 3 mutate triggers. Say I have an Arbor Elf. I target Arbor Elf to mutate a Migratory Greathorn. Somehow a copy of the mutated Arbor Elf gets created, even though the Arbor Elf hasn't actually mutated yet, and the new Arbor Elf has a Migratory Greathorn trigger somehow, despite it not actually seeming mutate, but rather just being a copy of the mutate creature that hasn't even actually mutated anyway yet. It's all very confusing.

Can you please reword your explanation? Say I have an Arbor Elf and I target it with Migratory Greathorn. What happens, in what order, how many total triggers, and what's the final result? I don't wanna just say "Well, some guy named Mitch said it worked this way", especially when your explanation made it sound like Mitch was wrong to begin with. Thanks!
@PUDRETE9193 жыл бұрын
@@stalkerstomper3304I was wrong, like a different answer said, Volo is an on-cast-trigger, so as long as you keep hiding away the Mutate Beasts under a none beast creature, the cast gets copied and also targets the same creature since you can't change the target, but the copy sees the original ETBing and therefore every mutate triggers atleast once if you have no beasts in your yard So to take you example, you decide to mutate under Arbor Elf (AE), Volo sees no beasts and copies the creature spell, now the copy ETBs first, making you get a basic, you shuffle, the original ETBs, both mutate triggers, you look for 2 basics, meaning for 3 Mana mutate you ramp for three tapped basics, but you need to put the Mutate underneath something otherwise future mutates won't trigger since they are all Beasts+, because the creautre only gains the abilities of the mutates
Actually, casting Mulldrifter with Volo does not work as you say. The copy is the copy of the spell and remembers all modes and alternate costs. So the token will be sacrificed as the original mulldrifter.
@gamosgamer Жыл бұрын
I don't think that Volo allows 3 triggers of ETB's. Debated about it with some friends but one quoted the rule: "201.5. Text that refers to the object it’s on by name means just that particular object and not any other objects with that name, regardless of any name changes caused by game effects." Which seems to note that all ETB that mention name just mean the creature itself and not any copies

Great budget build, Volo definitely in my opinion, is the strongest new commander from Forgotten Realms, the doubling ability is insane and having different creature types that don't conflict with each other isn't really that hard to do.
@alaraplatt81043 жыл бұрын
unfortunately evoke doesn't work like you think it does. "A copy of a spell or ability copies both the characteristics of the spell or ability and all decisions made for it, including modes, targets, the value of X, and *additional or alternative costs*." this includes things like whether the spell was kicked or evoked. still, copying an evoked mulldrifter is pretty nice and i picked it as the single elemental in my volo deck
@SirPoonga3 жыл бұрын
706.10 To copy a spell, activated ability, or triggered ability means to put a copy of it onto the stack; a copy of a spell isn’t cast and a copy of an activated ability isn’t activated. A copy of a spell or ability copies both the characteristics of the spell or ability and all decisions made for it, including modes, targets, the value of X, and additional or alternative costs. (See rule 601, “Casting Spells.”) Choices that are normally made on resolution are not copied. If an effect of the copy refers to objects used to pay its costs, it uses the objects used to pay the costs of the original spell or ability. A copy of a spell is owned by the player under whose control it was put on the stack. A copy of a spell or ability is controlled by the player under whose control it was put on the stack. A copy of a spell is itself a spell, even though it has no spell card associated with it. A copy of an ability is itself an ability.

@@kaoss6835 Unless I’m misunderstanding something, though, having even a single beast on the field or in the graveyard would cause any beast mutate cards to not trigger Volo, which could feel pretty bad. Obviously it isn’t the biggest deal in the world, I just wasn’t expecting to see so much overlap.

I'm not sure because clearly haven't built and tested this, but there may be a bit too many beasts in here. Even with bouncing them to your hand or putting graveyard things into the library I foresee a lot of things not getting that nice extra copy because you've already got three or four beasts on the battlefield. Surely there are other cards that aren't beasts that could replace some of these for a more reliable copying.

Tribal Golem has been sitting untouched since Onslaught block was draftable. Now here comes Volo annnnd due to that Black:regenerate it remains untouched… maybe next changeling set TG, maybe then.

Video was amazing. Loved how you went over all the cards. I'm new to the game, would adding a card in that increases hand size be good?
