My dad had a house on Sanibel Island for 13 years! We had lots of great vacations down there! Fortunately, dad decided to sell in 2007 right before the bottom fell out of the Real Estate market! He was elderly and had a difficult time getting around. During Hurricane Charley he lost 1 shingle! "Keep giving to the Little Sisters of the Poor Dad"! I told him .Someone up there is looking out for you!
@12w0

Not sure how to take your comment. Are you boasting your dad made a good chunk of money before the 2008 rug pull and corporate bailouts? That someone up there looked out for him, but not the rest of the people who were greatly affected by Charley and somehow that is attributed to his "giving to the little sisters of the poor"?

Great aerial footage. Wikipedia states that the current Sanibel Causeway, opened in 2007, took three years and $137 million to build. Lee County better be prepared to buy several roll-on/roll-off ferries and to build a new ferry terminal. Boy, it was nice to have the money to be able to afford a place on Sanibel Island. Before Tuesday, of course.

it looks like most of it is still standing. I'm sure the largest expense was the higher span and not the island portion. It will take time and money, but most of it looks fine. I'm sure the structural engineers will check whats standing to see if it is sound.

I went there earlier this year and it was absolutely beautiful. Massive spiders, cool lizards everywhere and gorgeous vegetation. The people were very nice and more courteous than my fellow New Jersey folk (as I expected with the south) as well and they don’t deserve this. Sad to see everything gone and destroyed. Ian was supposed to make a beeline for Tampa but pulled a Charley and made a last second turn towards Sanibel and Fort Myers. I guess this is just the price one has to occasionally pay for renting or living in an island paradise.

Without hesitation they drop into water hovering around the freezing point with 30ft swells to rescue mariners/fisherman in trouble. They are also very skilled at hoist rescue from very difficult locations on land...remote cliff faces, rocky shorelines, etc. This in no way is meant to diminish their efforts here but I gotta think they might prefer dodging some gators to rescue people over taking a swim in icy water. I have the utmost respect and gratitude for these guys and the job they do...Semper Fidelis

Omg looking at this destruction is so sad, rebuilding will take years and years to get these islands back to how they were, omg I’m just in shocked what a category 4 hurricane can destroy. I lived thru hurricane Andrew here in Miami on August 24, 1992, horrifying night, between the howling wind, the twisters, transformers exploding, just horrifying living thru that hurricane. I will never forget as I was 21 years old living with my parents and brothers, nothing happened to my home, it was untouched. I’ve never visited Ft Myers or Sanibel Island, been to Bradenton beach and Naples of course, this is just heartbreaking to see.

I feel sorry for thoes people who lost so much but it is amazing how people always want the government to pay for things and bail them out. Why doesn't the government require people to have insurance. Oh yea it's expensive and the people do not want the government to tell them what to do. Most people in those areas op out because the insurance is very expensive do to the cost of rebuilding but they can afford to buy a house down there.

To all our American neighbors in FL, the entire nation is grieving with you. There are no words that can comfort you while you must pick through, throw away and prepare to rebuild not just your homes, but your very lives and livelihoods. Continue to lean on one another and when necessary, lean on and utilize the groups that are coming in to help. But never, ever give up. You have gone through worse in building your life and you can do this. Get a agent that rep YOU and your claim in dealing with the insurance & gov flood (if you’re lucky enough to have it). HANG IN THERE BECAUSE YOU WILL COME BACK STRONGER AND BETTER THAN EVER. The USA is 110% behind you!! Numerous classmates from college work for Samaritan’s Purse. I think alot of people got out before the hurricane. The homes built in the 90s are built to withstand 150 mile per hour wins. Ours was. They strapped the roofs into the tie beam with metal straps. But if people had older homes, they risk losing roofs. I'm surprised that more roofs are not missing.

Thank God for the coast guard, and the national guard. There have been non-stop helicopters and coast guard planes in our skies since Thursday morning. There are rescues still going on as I type.

The man doing the fly over reporting, Jim, having lived and worked there in Fort Myers Beach, he stayed professional, BUT he also stayed a true human being by allowing us to hear how much seeing the hurricane damage affected him WITHOUT becoming hysterical.

My brother sold his home on Sanibel a decade ago due to a series of hurricanes. He still vacations there. It is one of the most beautiful islands I've ever visited. We were talking about moving back a few months ago. Not now. Hurricanes are just too devastating to continuely try to recover from. This is sad.

Oh how I love these beaches, Sanibel the white shell Island. We have lived and visited all these areas on both sides. Sanibel and Captiva were like a piece of Paradise. We left after H. Andrew and I had hoped to see once again... Sanibel. I think it was CBC new hurricane code came in after Andrew. Hope all the residents are okay.

I live on Ft. Myers Beach. 1st floor filled up. We swam to a two story. The surge kept coming. Then the house stated coming apart from the beating. We hit the water again and were separated immediately. I got pushed into a group of boats. After climbing in n out of 2 the 3rd one was good size n after what could have been ... idk... half an hour I got it to fire. I was smashing into stuff n the lower unit kept kicking up. I went the wrong way n had to double back. I made it to the mainland until it bottomed out n broke into a condo and hunkered down. It wasn't boarded up and debtee was smashing into the building and the wind ripped the roof off. They are still rescuing people. Ambulances have been receiving injured as they are brought off the island and have been running back n forth since rescue began as soon as the winds died down. I can't find my friend's....this just doest seem real.... Pray for us

Power lines still attached to those poles near beach front, thats amazing! If I had a shrimp boat it would have been a long way from the hurricane's path. Oh, maybe they wanted a new boat 🤫🫢

I saw the damage of the hurricane that hit Galveston Island TX a few years ago. Huge boats and yachts were tossed onto I-45 for miles. Also drove through New Orleans a month after Katrina hit. Some of the homes are still boarded up today with trees growing through them

First, my heart goes out to anyone that calls this area home, and to anyone that this area was special to. I hope this doesn't sound like a dumb question, but will the sea water eventually go back to being the clear blue/green that it usually is, and how do they reshape the beaches that got messed up from this? Thank you and again, I'm so very sorry.
