My dad had a house on Sanibel Island for 13 years! We had lots of great vacations down there! Fortunately, dad decided to sell in 2007 right before the bottom fell out of the Real Estate market! He was elderly and had a difficult time getting around. During Hurricane Charley he lost 1 shingle! "Keep giving to the Little Sisters of the Poor Dad"! I told him .Someone up there is looking out for you!
@12w02 жыл бұрын
Not sure how to take your comment. Are you boasting your dad made a good chunk of money before the 2008 rug pull and corporate bailouts? That someone up there looked out for him, but not the rest of the people who were greatly affected by Charley and somehow that is attributed to his "giving to the little sisters of the poor"?

Great aerial footage. Wikipedia states that the current Sanibel Causeway, opened in 2007, took three years and $137 million to build. Lee County better be prepared to buy several roll-on/roll-off ferries and to build a new ferry terminal. Boy, it was nice to have the money to be able to afford a place on Sanibel Island. Before Tuesday, of course.
@MarktrustingJesus2 жыл бұрын
it looks like most of it is still standing. I'm sure the largest expense was the higher span and not the island portion. It will take time and money, but most of it looks fine. I'm sure the structural engineers will check whats standing to see if it is sound.

Looks like the islands washed out. Those were very pioular beaches too. I'm sure they will build elevated spans al the way thru whic will change that area drastically for ever. Sanibel causeway beaches are very popular and always crowded.

I went there earlier this year and it was absolutely beautiful. Massive spiders, cool lizards everywhere and gorgeous vegetation. The people were very nice and more courteous than my fellow New Jersey folk (as I expected with the south) as well and they don’t deserve this. Sad to see everything gone and destroyed. Ian was supposed to make a beeline for Tampa but pulled a Charley and made a last second turn towards Sanibel and Fort Myers. I guess this is just the price one has to occasionally pay for renting or living in an island paradise.

He's a USCG Rescue Swimmer and you're absolutely right...they are INCREDIBLY courageous!!! Without hesitation they drop into water hovering around the freezing point with 30ft swells to rescue mariners/fisherman in trouble. They are also very skilled at hoist rescue from very difficult locations on land...remote cliff faces, rocky shorelines, etc. This in no way is meant to diminish their efforts here but I gotta think they might prefer dodging some gators to rescue people over taking a swim in icy water. I have the utmost respect and gratitude for these guys and the job they do...Semper Fidelis

I lived thru hurricane Andrew here in Miami on August 24, 1992, horrifying night, between the howling wind, the twisters, transformers exploding, just horrifying living thru that hurricane. I will never forget as I was 21 years old living with my parents and brothers, nothing happened to my home, it was untouched. I feel sorry for thoes people who lost so much but it is amazing how people always want the government to pay for things and bail them out. Why doesn't the government require people to have insurance. Oh yea it's expensive and the people do not want the government to tell them what to do. Most people in those areas op out because the insurance is very expensive do to the cost of rebuilding but they can afford to buy a house down there.

There are no words that can comfort you while you must pick through, throw away and prepare to rebuild not just your homes, but your very lives and livelihoods. Continue to lean on one another and when necessary, lean on and utilize the groups that are coming in to help. But never, ever give up. You have gone through worse in building your life and you can do this. Get a agent that rep YOU and your claim in dealing with the insurance & gov flood (if you’re lucky enough to have it). I think alot of people got out before the hurricane. The homes built in the 90s are built to withstand 150 mile per hour wins. Ours was. They strapped the roofs into the tie beam with metal straps. But if people had older homes, they risk losing roofs. I'm surprised that more roofs are not missing.
@stefkadank-derpjr14532 жыл бұрын
I hope. I know that they first thought the storm was going to hit further north and it wasn't until the last few days they changed the forecast. We are from Toronto and have been on this island many times over the past 40 years. So very sad to see it like this. Hopefully not too many casualties. A friend's condo is near the lighthouse.

The dark water looks like Oil spill. My heart is broken seeing these devastation. Prayers for everyone, including me, I do not know where some of my family are, or went, or if are alive or not. Pray hard, God is real, He will see us all lifted and up from this. Peace and Love Wins. Patriots hold on, God is coming.

I saw the damage of the hurricane that hit Galveston Island TX a few years ago. Huge boats and yachts were tossed onto I-45 for miles. Also drove through New Orleans a month after Katrina hit. Some of the homes are still boarded up today with trees growing through them

Everyone who lives everywhere needs to be able to sustain themselves for a week with no electricity water or sewer. It’s called being prepared.

And be prepared to evacuate when it's mandatory...

@@sherryelliott8861 I just don't get why anyone on that island wouldn't evacuate. Storm surge KILLS so many more than the wind.

Sanibel (homes/vegetation) looks to have fared much better than Ft Myers Beach, it will come back faster than initially expected.

First, my heart goes out to anyone that calls this area home, and to anyone that this area was special to. I hope this doesn't sound like a dumb question, but will the sea water eventually go back to being the clear blue/green that it usually is, and how do they reshape the beaches that got messed up from this? Thank you and again, I'm so very sorry.

We went there just as it was open to the public. It was wonderful, we stayed the whole day. We were getting shark teeth and the locals showed us how to get them. I still have them. Such good memories. My heart breaks for these people. God bless them!
