I am really pleased with the manner in which you narrated the story and approached people brother man. Deeply respectful and oriented to the consciousness. I'm a drywall worker who has lived in Florida for 27 years (about 8 in Tampa[currently]) and never witnessed this sad mess in person untill Helene. I am a 68 yr old native Fla boy who has experienced hurricanes in Fla, Louisiana, and Texas. Today an act of extreme kindness was shown to Us as we desperately looked For someone to erect out 2nd story storm shudders. A couple drove up, got their ladder out and helped me and my neighbor refusing to accept any pmt or donation. This couple has restored my faith in my fellow human being, yes it has changed me intensely as this is Agape Love that expects nothing in return as the reward is in their hearts.

I was born and raised in St. Pete Beach, and I've lived in Western North Carolina for 14 years now; we left Tampa because of this precise reason, plus sea level rise and extreme heat. To have one hurricane destroy both areas in still incomprehensible to me. This was the most excellent piece I've seen in a long time, but I hate to have been right, you knows? Many thanks and good luck in the coming months, Jessica

I’ve spent the past week helping clean up on St Pete Beach. It’s heartbreaking. This video captures very well what’s going on here, and now we are hunkering down for what’s sure to be worse. As I read through the comments, there are so many heartless people saying, “They knew the risks!” Well, if we abandon Florida because of hurricanes, California for earthquakes, the entire central US for tornados, etc. etc. etc., where will we all live? The moon? Like the man said, this isn’t a competition. Have some compassion, people, because you may be next. Nobody is safe from nature.

Nature? Or Bill Gates and his billionaire eugenic freaks who want global control of us all. Yes, Gates has a patent (2009) on hurricane control. Imagine the ego on this person of interest and others like him? NASA, UN, WEF, CIA, controlled puppets in our governments, agencies, and corporations are all guilty in the destruction of our country...piece by piece...whether it be physically, spiritually or mentally...they are doing it.

It’s overlooked because Floridians know exactly what to expect every hurricane season, and have a year to prepare or move. It’s like living in California and being surprised that a wildfire popped up. There should be nobody surprised by it, you know it’s coming and foolish if you’re not ready. How do you prepare for a hurricane when you live in the mountains several hundred miles from the coast? As a Ex-Floridian I had precut plywood and pre installed anchors for the windows, pre filled reusable sandbags, propane tanks, etc. because I knew year in and year out that hurricane season was coming. Now living in the mountains, I pre fill water containers, stock firewood, gas for generators and chainsaw because I know winter is coming. But Helene was a monster that nobody up here would ever suspect. That’s why it’s in the news, it’s a tragedy that nobody expected.
@idahomike

Exactly. There's a tremendous difference between a seasonal, expected and predictable hurricane, vs a 1000-year flood. The pain is real for everyone, but that doesn't mean what happened in NC and the surrounding area isn't more newsworthy, just like I'd expect to hear about a catastrophic wildfire in Maine compared to a hillside going up in flames in California.

It's not the same, no. But it's still a tragedy to lose your house and belongings. As Jonathan said, he's not trying to make it a contest of whose pain is worse. He's simply pointing out that people have a right to grieve for their communities wherever those communities are hit by disaster. In the UK we have issues with communities being lost to coastal erosion. Houses built on cliffsides which are crumbling. People live in those houses knowing that the cliff gets ever closer - but the towns were built long before that time, when the cliff edge was hundreds of feet away. People continue to live there because people have friends, family nearby. Because they grew up there and can't imagine living anywhere else. I would no more fault Floridians for mourning the damage of a hurricane than I would an elderly british couple crying as their house is condemned due to the landslide getting too close. Equally, I can feel that sorrow and sympathy for Florida at the same time as I can understand just how devastating the situation in WNC/Eastern Tennessee is. We don't need to pick and choose. We can understand that those affected are living with a situation no one would ask for.

My heart goes out & my prayers are for each life impacted & each family & home devastated / destroyed to recover and get mental health services as needed. Counseling for survivors can be very helpful. Acute stress disorder (up to 30 days post-Helene ) & PTSD (31+ days) are real. Disasters shake us to the core. We survive. Communities get stronger. But at a great cost. Thank you for addressing economic impact on homeowners. The term "buyer resistance" stood out. I feel so bad for the first time home buyers. 6:50 honestly your own statement is why the flooding in Tennessee, North Carolina, and Virginia is different. I saw one gentleman in North Carolina who was 72 and his Mom was 94 said they were lifetime residents of Buncombe County ( Ashville ) and flooding had never before been an issue at their homesites. He said water level was 11 feet above where it had ever been. 11 feet. That's historic and unfathomable. Those residents had no idea they were vulnerable.

Those of us who live on the southeastern coast have been through many different types of hurricanes. A storm might be low in category but large in size and moving slowly. These cause massive flood damage. A category 4 that is compact and moving quickly will cause mostly wind damage before going out to sea. No one can predict the level of devastation a hurricane leaves behind. Florida hasn't been forgotten its just that some situations have to be dealt with first. People are still missing family members in NC. People are stranded with no food, water or ability to contact the outside world.

Many others are too poor and/or uneducated to pull up roots and leave. As long as well off taxpayers choose to remain in place the local and federal governments will continue to play whack-a-mole with these storms which, as we all know, is a fruitless exercise. What's with all the “God bless”? A higher power has absolutely nothing to do with it. Humans alone are increasingly destroying nature and changing the climate. A “small” storm like this is just a tiny harbinger of what awaits us all in the coming decades. And of course, as a believer, you can pray and run to church every week, but it won't change anything and it won't help anyone.

@@SongbirdstressIt's a matter of calculating the risk. I'm in Southern California. Yeah we have fires and earthquakes. People can choose to not live in a high risk fire zone. Earthquakes can be an issue but the 7 pointers occur around every 100 years or so, (30% chance in the next 100 years for an 8 pointer) . In Florida the odds of a major incident is 100% five times a year. I don't care if people live there but do it at THEIR own risk, not the taxpayers or insurers.

Really great piece. My Dad's home flooded 21" during Ian and his home was 46ft. above sea level in Orlando. Last weekend we went down to help my cousin and her family when their Tampa bay home flooded about the same. It was not on the water, several blocks from there. Your honest and informative, which is something lacking from MSM. Yes, honesty isn't always nice or drives clicks, but it is so valuable and appreciated by citizens trying to make informed decisions. THANK YOU. Hopefully you find better shelter when reporting than you did when you lost your roof during the storm. While you're reporting may cost you your life one day, you save so many more because of that courage. ❤ It's the exact reason i clear the roads of trees during hurricanes, so police, fire, ambulances and power companies can help our citizens. I understand why North Carolina has dominated the news cycle but it really does feel the national media has left Florida twisting in the wind. I don’t want any more coverage of Israel and Ukraine. I’m big supporters of both but for the immediate future we and our media, us as citizens and us has humans needs to look out for each other. Milton will be here very soon, I’m worried about all the loose debris and a storm surge impacting the actual Tampa Bay. Saw the bay itself averages 12 feet in depth except for large shipping lanes. The surge being predicted for Milton is 15-19 feet so in theory the Bay is going to double in depth during the storm. Praying for all those impacted by these storms.

Good piece, I lived in Florida most of my life right on the Ocean or very near I was prepared then and knew more or less the threat. I survived many many storms, fought the insurance companies, Paid the ridiculous fees with little or no return or dragged out processes. I delt with the scammers, helped so many of my neighbors and friends (There's still that happening) I left because of the amount of people that came in, I get it! Its a cool place to live. My heart and donations goes out to the Appalachians on this one.

This video is so very poignant. I cannot thank you enough for making this video. Lest we not forget.... For what it's worth, our home was built in 1965 and I live in Baycrest in Tampa on a canal just off of the Bay. No matter how many hurricanes came through we never had water that came up further than the middle of the yard. Hurricane Helene changed everything - 1 foot of water inside our home. This may be it for the house....😢

Here is what people don't understand: It takes an ETERNITY to get repairs after this. The electrical, the drywall, the floors ect. The wait for inspectors, construction workers ect, just takes forever. And then what happens after this are the hikes in insurance rates. Car insurance in SWFL has doubled, tripled in some cases because of all the claims. It's ridiculous how much it costs to recover after an event like this.

My B-in-Law has a house just south of Galveston, TX. It is on 12' stilts, by law, to avoid the inevitable next hurricane. Any house rebuilt there in FL should do the same. Ocean front living does have some advantages and allure, but you need to be prepared or you get this.

I feel horrible for anyone losing a home, but should you really be allowed to build and keep rebuilding in an area that continually floods? Everyone would love to have beach front property, but is it worth the financial devastation and potential loss of life? Hope everyone stays safe with next storm coming.

We need to teach better science to these people. This has been predicted for over 40 years. Do not buy any houses in Florida, if the insurance companies cant make money, you know that Florida as a whole is a lost cause. Milton will make Helene look like a drizzle, GET OUT NOW.

I know many may feel some anger or that they must endeavour but the simple truth is that everything you build in regions with these Storms will be wasted, billions of dollars spent when there are safer places, areas Untouched but without the fear of nature tearing it all up, please consider the future more. My sadness at the suffering of so many still stands to everyone who has lost family/friends etc, I wish you all the best and hope you can find some peace in the end, 😢🤞

I grew up in Pinellas(40 years). I've been saying for many years that people have become too complacent with all the near misses. We got extremely lucky for a long time with air currents pushing the storms further north or south of the area. It's led to a sort of hopeful ignorance on the part of everyone involved. Buyers think they're getting a piece of paradise, and builders are looking for short-term profits in a situation where they have no risk once the sale is done. They'll downplay it, but they are well aware of the risk. There are multiple hurricanes increasing in severity EVERY YEAR. Look at all the insurance carriers abandoning the state. Sooner or later, this was inevitable. That guy at @9:30 was spot on, and it will happen immediately. They'll rebuild, say it's all good, and people will come back and do it all over again. When the house of cards comes crashing down(again), they'll throw up their hands and go, "How did this happen?" It's ridiculous. We'll just keep ignoring the signs and the need to do something about the increasing climate severity until... I don't know... Florida is wiped away entirely? When is it too obvious to ignore in favor of short-term profit?
