How Crazy that you are sampling the ER 101! I was at a swap meet this weekend and found a wooden Eagle Rare 101 box from the 70’s. First time I ever saw one. Picked it up for $10.

Eagle Rare wasn't acquired by Buffalo Trace until the late 80s. This is Seagrams product from 1979

I wonder what the mashbill would be on the 1979 bottle? Is it possible that other than name this could be completely different than what Buffalo Trace makes, even 90's bottles?

It was purchased by Sazerac in 1989. Pre 1989 was distilled at Old Prentice distillery (modern day Four Roses), it was a seagrams product.

I was lucky enough to buy a 1979 and 1980 bottle this summer. I opened the 1979 also and really enjoyed it!! I still have roughly 30% of the bottle left. The 1980 is staying closed for the time being

An interesting fact about older Eagle Rare is that it was distilled at the current Four Roses distillery. It was the old Prentice Distillery and in 1994 it became the Four Roses distillery. If you were looking to do a then and now with an older eagle rare there were Old Prentice distilled Eagle Rare bottles with a mid 2000s bottling. They look very similar to the current production as well.

This was distilled by Seagrams in Lawrenceburg at the distillery that is now known as Four Roses.

Great video! It’s always interesting to see a review of vintage whisky. I’m a scotch guy and have tried some vintage single malt. The difference with that tends to be the barley variety, floor malting, yeast and the sherry casks used. So my question is what is different in vintage bourbon? Is it the corn variety? Better new oak casks? Something in the production? Thanks and cheers!
@ItsBourbonNight2 ай бұрын
@@NoteworthyWhisky There’s so many variables out there there’s no way to really know for sure. Bourbon was less popular back then, so the barrels probably had older wood in them, but it could be a number of things.

You'll have to do a 3 way comparison. Pre 1989 was Old Prentice Distillery, then there was an era it was bottled by Old Prentice NOLA which was sourced from somewhere else, then you have the ER that was distilled at Buffalo Trace.

I appreciate the video. But, I really think (IF YOU HAD MORE, which you don't because this was a donation) that you'd need to compare this stuff blind to the better modern bourbons. It is a well known fact that the perception of quality/rarity has a big impact on the experience (e.g. If you THINK you are drinking expensive wine/whiskey, then your experience is almost invariably greater than if you're told it's ordinary or lower shelf.). I mean it is obvious you're excited to try this rare dram, and that has an effect on your perceptions.
@djvie242 ай бұрын
Brewzle did that blind with 4-5 Dusty’s VS modern whiskeys. The old whiskeys won hands down. Not saying that means vintage would always win but I don’t think it’s just a perception or hype thing to suggest vintage can be superior.
@ikiruyamamoto10502 ай бұрын
@@djvie24 It's also possible that we need to address the myth that it doesn't "age" in the bottle. Everything ages.
@djvie242 ай бұрын
@@ikiruyamamoto1050It may age in some way, but not the same way it does in a barrel. In the barrel the spirit is exposed to the swings of temperature and the qualities of the oak. In a bottle the whiskey is far more temperature controlled and is essentially interacting with itself. The only proven discernible things that age a whiskey in a bottle are oxygen, sunlight, and heat. Oxygen mutes the flavors of the whiskey as a bottle gets drunk over time. Sunlight and heat only seem to ruin whiskey.
