In petrochemical plants they seal a variety of hazardous and nonhazardous liquids in pumps, mixers and reactors. In many homes they are used in the water well, washing machine, dishwasher, and garbage disposal. Mechanical seals have become a part of our everyday life. Before we can understand the importance of mechanical seals to industry, we need to consider the fundamental problem of preventing leakage around a rotating shaft that enters a chamber, for example in a pump.

This is an best introduction to mechanical seals for rotating shafts, perhaps the only explanation that starts from the fundamental problem of how to make a shaft rotate in a box that contains fluids without the fluids leaking out. It shows how the key components evolved, beginning from the realization that the sealing surfaces must be annular discs attached to the rotating shaft. Then other requirements, such as easy replacement of the sealing surfaces, improved sealing by means of springs, etc. are described, so that the viewer can appreciate all the typical components. Ultimately, of course, the sealing surfaces must be made extremely flat in order for it to work. (Is capillary action what prevents the lubricating fluid between the sealing surfaces from leaking out?)
