Saltatio Mortis is a German folk rock/metal band from Karlsruhe. Finsterwacht, the song and video is the start of a new Pen & Paper campaign from the German series "The Dark Eye", which is very popular in Germany. Saltatio Mortis also worked with Bethesda to produce “The Dragonborn Comes” for Skyrim and “Pray to the Hunter” for The Elder Scrolls online, highly recommended! Great reaction! 🤘 Greetings from Bavaria

Saltatio Mortis is a fantastic band, well worth checking out. Especially if you like the Feuerschwanz vibe. The Finsterwacht CD pre-order includes a desktop game (like Dungeons & Dragons) and I'm most definately grabbing it!

Tabletop, not desktop ;)

Your pronounciation of "Finsterwacht" was basically perfect. Not bad for an english native speaker. Especially the "ch" in "wacht" is a sound that doesn't exist in english at all. 👍

That was just like I first watched it! Blind Guardian are legend! I know them since the early 90, so nothing to say. Saltatio Mortis is so much fun! I had the chance to see them in their beginning in the early 2000s on some smaller Festivals, one was on a castle, and thats the perfect scene! Check them out, they´re worth! want a request? Its My Mother Told me.....

Saltatio Mortis is also a very good Liveband. You should listen to "My mother told me " "Pray to the hunter " or "The dragonborn comes " also with good videos.

I completely second the notion of checking these songs out and those three are also anglophone as a bonus here - This is essentially part of a larger project of a campaign set for the German grandfather of D&D style high fantasy table-top games ( *DSA* - "Das Schwarze Auge" - "The Black [..."Dark" is closer] Eye" - no naturally not *that* kind of black eye - that is blue in German🤣), can be bought with the campaign included 😉. The slightly disturbing part is that this campaign setting of a rising threat echoes reality in a way that an investigative irregular war campaign would have echoed post-9-11 times... 'nuff said, don't mean to get political. *Saltatio Mortis* (Lat. for "The Dance of Death") is a band, the stage name for their front man is "Alea der Bescheidene" - "Alea the Humble". Yeah, there's irony in this - he's also a former re-enactor and as such has knowledge of sword-play (I suppose it's in the tradition of the German sword-masters Lichtenauer, Tallhofer and Ringeck that uses the hand-and-a-half-sword mostly, something you notice in all the videos he is in with swordplay) in a stage-fight-way, comes in handy in a lot of videos mentioned here^^. Best regards Raoul G. Kunz

The Band is the group trying to reach the tower. In order of death: "Luzi das L" (Bagpipes/Pipes), "Bruder Frank" (Bass), "Till Promill" (Guitars/Mandolines), The bald, bearded Guy "El Silvador" or short "Elsi" (Bagpipes/Pipes) , the guy in black armor "Jean Mechant" (Drums/Percussion/Keys/Guitar), "Alea der Bescheidene" (Vocals/Bagpipes/Pipes/Guitar/Mandolines etc.), "Falk Freiherr von Hasenmümmelstein" (Hurdy Gurdy/Bagpipes).

Saltatio mortis did a cover of Electric Callboy's Hypa Hypa and it's a treat. Lead vocalist Alea der Bescheidene (Alea the Humble) was one of the guest singers on Feuerschwanz' version of Warriors of the World United. There is a live performance video (from a streaming event during 'that special time') of Schildmaid (Shield Maiden) by Feuerschwanz with Luzi Das L & 'Elsi' El Silbador, both of SM's bagpipe players, featuring. Most of SM's material is in German but they do have some English songs too, mostly covers. You might like: Subway to Sally: Veitstanz (2014 Version) (Live) feat. Saltatio Mortis, Schandmaul, Feuerschwanz, Chris Harms from Lord Of The Lost (not in the video as he was connected via stream), MajorVoice (goth rock solo artist), Patty Gurdy. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mKSTdZusmr-rd7s The original version was released as a promo single for the 2001 album Herzblut (Lifeblood), in 2014 they started doing a 're-imagined' version. This performance was filmed in 2021. Veitstanz (St. Vitus Dance) is a term for a neurological disease (Sydenham's Chorea) but also referring to a social phenomenon called Tanzwut (literally Dance Rage, English term Dancing Mania), mainly happening during the 14th and the 15th century and mostly in continental Europe. It made groups of people dance erraticly and uncontrollably until they collapsed, some even died from exhaustion. It has never been conclusively clarified what triggered it.

If you're in interest or the need for a translation of the lyrics, I'm gladly of support 🤘 Lyrics of “Finsterwacht” = “Darkwatch” [intro] Darkness weighs heavily on the land The looming peaks of the mountains rise ominously into the sky After all these years it's back, that eerie whisper in the night What is hidden there in the dark forests? A storm is coming, it is getting cold on the Dark Ridge But there is hope For in the midst of all this gloom, the Guardians of the Watch stand high up on the towers Day after day, night after night Ready to defend our families and our country with their lives When they light their fires, the Goddess has mercy on us It is the fires of fear that burn there May the heroism of the Guard shine brighter than the light of the flames Because they are our last bastion from what lurks for us in the shadows And our hope there on the Finsterwacht [Verse 1: Alea] The flames burn high up The sky is black and distant A memorial in the darkness Every fire is a star Say goodbye friends Sing one last song Sign after sign together into the night On the Darkwatch [Verse 2: Hansi Kürsch] Silent heroes without rest The looks sharp as steel United, inspired by the courage to die Let's stand here one last time Be vigilant friends The shadows have awakened Sign after sign together into the night [Chorus: Alea & Hansi Kürsch] And the world is on fire I want to go through the fire with you Until our ashes unite for eternity And the world is on fire Then we'll see each other again Beyond here, beyond time [Instrumental Break] [Chorus: Alea & Hansi Kürsch] And the world is on fire I want to go through the fire with you Until our ashes unite For eternity And the world is on fire Then we'll see each other again Beyond here, beyond time For eternity [Bridge: Choir, Hansi Kürsch & Alea] Fires flare up We are the light in the night Rondra, hear our choir Come stand with us, for we are the guard Friends, be careful (fires blazing) On the Darkwatch Be the shield wall at the end of the world (We are the light in the night) Hold the tower (Rondra, hear our choir) Also in Orkensturm Stand together for we are the watch (Come stand with us for we are the watch) Friends, be careful (fires blazing) On the Darkwatch Be the shield wall at the end of the world (We are the light in the night) Hold the tower (Rondra, hear our choir) Also in Orkensturm Stand together for we are the watch (Come stand with us for we are the watch) [Chorus: Alea & Hansi Kürsch, only Hansi Kürsch] And the world is on fire I want to go through the fire with you Until our ashes unite Forever (Forever) And the world is on fire Then we'll see each other again Beyond here, beyond time For eternity

Within "The Dark Eye" (a german Pen and Paper System) lore: Rondra is the goddess of battle and thunderstorms. Rondra is assigned to the pantheon of the twelve gods. Their color is blood red, their sacred animal is the roaring lioness. The number dedicated to the goddess is two. And Finsterkamm is a montain range within the "The Dark Eye" world, which sits between a realm of men and orks :D

Saltatio Mortis is a band, it's the group who startet at the begin from the video. Pipes and Hurdy Gurdy are Instruments they used every time.

Nice reaction. Your attempt on "Saltati Mortis" was quitw good, and your first attempf of Finsterwacht was spot on. :) As ppl already mentioned, Saltatio Mortis is the name of the band (the members of which basically formed the party we were watching at work throughout the video). Now, OSN had his difficulties with the song as he reacted to it before the captions were up. (The video was shot in 4 days, but post production editing went up until shortly before it was uploaded, AFAIK). Friends and I are still argueing abouth whether he butchered the song or slayed it. 🤣 (And yep, I still think he liked it very much.)

OSN's interpretation was quite funny and spot on, giving that he had no captions. Which btw are not so good as they should be ("gods" vs "goddess", and some other parts as well).

At 2:11 in the video you see Bernhard Hennen (in his role as a dying knight). He is the best-known german author of fantasy novels and also wrote stories for the german role-playing game system "The Dark Eye". 😉
