Monster guitar ruffs Wow!!!!!!!!!! Maybe the greatest in rock and roll history?
The "Hotel California" refers to their perception of what the music industry was like at the time when they first went to California and had to deal with it. From the music companies tempting you, to the drugs, to the feeling that "once you're in here you can never leave", it's a trippy, beautifully dark nightmare. Listen to it again with that picture in your mind and it'll make a lot more sense.

The first few years of my life, my mother only played Elvis and country music in our house and car. I was 6 years old and walked into my friends living room and saw his sister kneeling in front of the stereo and suddenly there was a new sound that I was never exposed to. I thought it was magic. It was Hotel California. My intro to rock music other than Elvis who died the next year. Don Henley loves all the speculation about a song that simply is a metaphor for "losing one's innocence, transforming from adolescence to adulthood, once you cross that threshold and take on those responsibilities, there is no going back". But, he said anyone can have their own meaning if they want.
@mikefetterman67822 жыл бұрын
Don Felder (with the double neck guitar,) wrote the music for this, and Don Henley (after leaving the Whiskey-a-go-go drunk and driving toward Needles all night) wrote the lyrics while driving the desert.

Besides the Beatles, the Eagles are my favorite group ever! Of course I was in my 20s when they were at their height. It’s hard to find a bad song of theirs. This song has been talked about for decades what it was exactly about and the drummer Don Henley/guitarist Glenn Frey would never actually say. many think it’s about the dark side of Hollywood and recording/addictions. I’m sure there’s plenty of websites about this song. If you can find The live version of take it to the limit, the bass singer Randy Meisner blows it out of the water! Beautiful beautiful song and he has such a high tenor voice when he hits it right like he does in that performance, there’s nothing like it. Kind of hard to find though. The Eagles are pretty strict on copyright, dammit. Great reaction!!!

By the way I watched a documentary of the Eagles on HBO, very very good. The drummer and the keyboard player/guitarist, Don Henley and Glenn Fry, started the band and were the leaders. The story about this song is bass player Randy was not confident at all he could always hit those notes live and some concerts refused to play it. At one point Glenn Fry and he came to blows over it. That’s why this night is so cool that he was hitting them and you can tell how happy the whole band is about it. Randy Meisner didn’t stay with them but a few years. I liked him the best cause he seemed like just a sweet guy. Joe Walsh, with the bandanna, is the crazy, wild, funny one with the great personality and super guitar talent. Henley and Frey were both pretty much bullies and egomaniacs. But talented ones and I guess it took that to get them where they got. Much fighting in this band and changes of performers. Glenn Frey died a couple years ago. Henley & Walsh have great solo careers also you should check out.

The song exemplifies how California is a trap. Everything is so pleasant and inviting on the surface but, as you dig deeper, you discover that reality is far more sinister. He refers to the hostess as "Tiffany-twisted", with her Mercedes-Benz and surrounded by eye candy; clearly obsessed with appearances. He's unable to rest (which is the primary function of a hotel) because he's constantly awakened by indulgent invitations. "Mirrors on the ceiling" play to a person's vanity, while pink champagne is the original "alcopop" - its 'innocent' appearance belies its alcoholic potency. Like the other 'guests', he's become a prisoner through his own decisions. "In the Master's chambers, they gather for the feast" is deceptive - people come in expecting to served food when, in reality, they are being served *AS* food to The Beast called California. Escape is now impossible; the only possible reprieve from your suffering is to "check out" (euphemism for suicide). Bonus Trivia: The Eagles and Steely Dan were 'frenemies' and would repeatedly slip references to the other in their songs - in "Hotel California", it was the phrase "Steely knives".
