As well as it did in sales and with the critics it seems strange to say it is so underrated but it really is. Top to bottom, every single song should have been and could have been a classic. Sad Cafe is the best song not many people have ever heard.

Eagles was country oriented band at first. After a while Frey & Henley brough in Felder and then Walsh. These two made them sound far more rock'n'roll as we are witnessing here. There's a device called talk-box that is used in this song. Peter Frampton introduced it in his best album called " PF comes Alive". P.S. You should do Joe Walshes early stuff ( or later stuff since 1973 with Tommy Bolin) with James Gang "Funk 49", or his solo songs "Confessor", "Life's been good" "Two sides to Every story" etc.

It’s Mr. Joe Walsh and that sound is called a talk box. It’s a piece of equipment that has a tube running from it, up the mike stand like a straw right next to the microphone. The guitarist plays something which goes down through the device and returns to his mouth from the tube which he can manipulate with his mouth straight back into the microphone. That’s why it sounds so trippy. He can change the sound with his mouth structure. You will hear it now and again on a few other songs. One of the most famous examples is Peter Frampton live. Everyone had this record back in the day. I mean EVERYONE. The song is Do You Feel like I Do. He was referring to being high. We smoked a lot of weed back then. It was a part of all this. It was automatic with Rock. You go to a concert, everyone smoking as soon as the lights went down. It was understood and the cops were cool with it. You would be at a show, band blasting and you would get a tap on your shoulder in the dark. A small little joint cherry glowing in the dark. Take a couple of hits and pass it down the row. You could watch the joint travel down whole rows. It’s how we did it. Some of these concerts would simply knock you on your ass! And we knew the music already! That’s how kick ass it was! Nothing, I mean Nothing compares to the live show! You just had to be there. A super high power band like RUSH? Fuck you up for days. People used to wonder what the fuck was wrong with me after one of their concerts. They obviously were not RUSH fans and had no clue. I was just a giggling idiot, my ears still ringing, my eyes still blazing, my voice harsh from yelling all night, my hands hurting from banging them together for hours and hungover. Still impossible to communicate with and laughing. I’m pretty sure they thought I was a very happy mental patient. That’s how I /we did it!

If you've heard the wah wah pedal on the guitar, the talkbox ( named because it sounds like the guitar is talking) is a variation on that. The difference is instead of using your foot, you literally have a tube attached to either the guitar or microphone that the player puts in his mouth. For a great example, check out Joe Walsh Rocky Mountain Way.

Listen to “All of you” if you want some funky bass. Don Felder from the Eagles has Abraham Laborial, absolute legend on bass plays on the studio track. Fun fact, Abe’s son Abe jr. plays drums for Paul McCartney’s tour band. It’s no accident that Paul has a fellow bass players son whom he admires greatly play for him. The funk level on “All of you” shows. Tom Petty talks about Don Felder teaching him guitar when he was very young on a official documentary I watched released by Petty. Joe gets a lot of credit he rightly deserves, Don Felder is also a legend. I put Hotel California and his guitar right up there with the most memorable licks ever.

The 'instrument' you were hearing was guitar through a mouth tube. A sound driver (speaker, if you will) is driven by the electric guitar and fed up a tube and held in the mouth. The sound is then picked up by a vocal microphone. This allows the player to use his mouth (lips, tongue cheeks and throat) to shape the sound any way his mouth would the sound from his own vocal chords. It's a super cool, ingenious and simple effect used by many bands in the 70's. Check out "joe walsh rocky mountain way daryl's house" for a master class in the mouth tube. BTW, Joe Walsh was lead guitarist for The Eagles... Enjoy!

The Beastie Boys sampled the drum and bass at the beginning of this song and made High Plains Drifter on Paul's Boutique... Every time I hear either song I think about the other one..
