Dire Straights Brothers in Arms SACD is an excellent SACD and on $16 on Amazon. My Whoa moment when I first listened to it was the opening of Money For Nothing. When you listen you will know it.

I have a UB9000 and the fact i can still pull and keep going my Denon AVC A10Se to support Dolby, DTS, THX surround EX from all my three players for a combined Ac3-RF Dolby Digital via Laserdisc, DVD, SACD, DVD-A, from my Denon 3910 and now lossless Dolby and Dts via my UB9000 is great. Yes its obsolete but the heavy investment i made over £2k back almost 25 years ago is a worthy and welcome addition to keep my physical media going. Which arguably is just as obsolete. But i do stream and have no room for proper Atmos/DTS X in home. So i carry on with 7.1

Absolutely necessary if you want to use the build in Dacs. HDMI to avr might suffice with DACs are equals in sonic performance but not likely. I am using the analogue outputs from a primare B32 Blu ray player to a Marantz receiver and it sounds more solid than using HDMI.

I have a PIONEER universal dvd player (decodes DVD-A and SACD) since 2003 and it does have a 5.1 analog outputs that then I used to connect to my old receiver's multichannel-in. Today I have a receiver that doesn't have a multichannel-in patch so I forsook playing 5.1 DVD-A altogether. But sometimes I play my SACDs converted to PCM through my SONY Blu-ray Player's HDMI outputting to my receiver. I'm a huge fan of your channel and your sense of humour. Pioneer DV-563A? is one I still have from 2003 and and an Oppo from 2007. The Pioneer was very good for audio and value at the time. It has very good Burr Brown DAC chips.

I remember my first Yamaha DTS/DD amp had 5.1 phono inputs that I used to connect my old SACD player for multichannel music as the Sony SACD player outputted the audio using the DSD DAC inside the player. Nowadays most Blu-Ray players that play SACD's always convert the DSD signal to PCM 24/176.4 and output the audio through HDMI therefore rendering DSD DACs effectively obsolete which is a shame as to me they sounded less brittle than PCM. My Sony Blu-Ray at least does this and I must admit I was surprised that it doesn't have a DSD DAC in it.. Shame SACD's didn't take off and become more popular. At least we have 24 bit High Resolution stereo audio FLAC and Atmos and DTS Master Audio Audio Blu-Ray's. Oh and thanks for your help on a previous video regarding my 5.2.2 system. It is now up and running with your recommendations and sounds great.

I totally agree with your assessment. I currently run my Sony SACD player through an analog 5.1 output to an Outlaw Audio ICBM and then to my Denon AVR-2808CI. I do this because my SACD player lacks an HDMI output. I later did an A/B comparison w/ this Sony and a Denon Universal DVD player w/ HDMI out to compare the sound quality and I could tell that my Sony sounded better. Not sure if it's because of the DAC's in the Sony but definitely I felt there was more warmth and tighter bass vs what I heard on the Denon AVR doing the processing. So yeah.... 5.1 / 7.1 analog inputs are IMHO the way to go especially for SACD. Also, gotta give cudos to my ICBM that does an excellent job in analog bass management.

I think the noise floor is only evident when playing tracks. When you pause or stop, the speaker is putting out a background hiss which is different.

Ealan .I have an Oppo 205 which has 7.1 outs and a marantz 7015 as the input...In my oppo 205 I have an ESS dac. I have compared sound quality to my 7015 and the ESS is better to my ears for music and more balanced for movies ( I only have a 5.1 system. I'm in the process of upgrading to an AVM70 processor. Luckily still has analogue ins. But at that stage I will be using the XLR inputs.

I have a good number of multi-channel SACDs. I play them on an Oppo BDP-83SE player, which has 7.1 outputs. Several years ago, when I needed a new receiver or processor, I bought the Marantz 6013, specifically because it had 7.1 inputs. Now, HDMI for multichannel is OK, and the Sony players (those that can play SACDs) have a multi-channel HDMI output. I don't think the sound is quite up to the Oppo's 7.1, but HDMI is an acceptable alternative to 7.1. Otherwise, although SACD players are available from several brands, and although they are apparently popular in Japan, only the Sony 4KHD players, among current players, can play *multi-channel* SACDs (via HDMI). Even the $7500 Marantz SA-10 is 2-channel only. It has no 7.1 or HDMI. Why does this product even exist, if it can't play multi-channel? I hadn't heard of Magnetar player until your video. I'll have to check it out, as a possible replacement for the venerable Oppo player.

Wouldn't disabling the height channels in your receiver give you access to the Dolby True HD 7.1 base layer?

Most likely any signal coming into the AVR 7.1 analog inputs is going to be converted to digital by the ADC in the AVR . this is the only way any processing can be done by the AVR. So it will be converted twice by the player DAC and the AVR DAC. Are you absolutely sure the analog signal was passed through the AVR untouched? Going directly from the player to a 7 channel amplifier instead of AVR may give a different result. Top end players would have these outputs if they play SACD music because the DSD format can not be transmitted by HDMI unless converted to PCM format first. To hear native DSD you must use the analog outputs.

In the UDP900 menu system, I specifically turned the HDMI audio option to "off" so that it didn't pass over anything. And then selected "pure direct" mode on the SR7015 so that no processing should be done (in theory). That's the whole point of "pure direct" mode since Marantz components are made to be hybrid music and home theater AVRs. But yes, at some point, I would like to test it out going straight to an amp and bypassing the AVR all together. See if that makes a difference.

I don't know a whole lot but my Reavon and my Sony before it had the option to convert to PCM or leave as DSD in audio output. I can audio output DSD over HDMI to my Marantz which has DSD decoding. Sony and Emotiva also have native DSD decoding but Anthem as an example do not. Now how it is handled once it gets the DSD whether converting to PCM and then DAC, I don't know. Assuming it does, couldn't it be said it these players do the same thing with their DACs before sending analog out?

​@@jjchmiel78 Not possible. DSD for copyright protection is forbidden from being output digitally from any players and the HDMI spec does not include DSD format. It would violate DSD licensing.

@@dwaynepiper3261 You are dead wrong! Do some research or experience for yourself. Sony, the creators of SACD and DSD licensing is the cheapest way. Take for example a Sony BDP S6700 which is just a basic Blu-ray player with SACD capability. It has options to covert SACD/DSD to PCM to transmit over coax/optical/ or HDMI. It also has a setting to send the raw DSD over to compatible receiver/processor. For example Sony (since they created and own DSD licensing) Denon X1800 or better, Marantz, Emotiva, Trinov of course are compatible to receive DSD over HDMI. Here are a couple units you can read the manual for through Crutchfield. Player Sony BDP S6700 page 30 (51 in the PDF) and receiver Sony STR DH590 page 52. I was using a Sony player then Reavon with my DSD compatible receiver Marantz SR6012 since 2018.

@@jjchmiel78 This was the case when I got my Oppo 981 universal player in 2007. It converted to PCM for HDMI otherwise the 5.1 analog output had to be used. I had forgotten they added DSD to HDMI specs after that and then it was hard finding a DAC in an AVR that would accept DSD without conversion.. I guess it eventually got sorted out after the failure of the SACD market. Can you guess why it failed. I stand corrected. I also had a Pioneer SACD player before that when HDMI did not exist only analog outputs. SPDIF digital outputs could not pass DSD.

ESS DQCs are okay. Hard core audiophiles are rapidly turning to discrete R2R ladder DACs. However, the vast majority of those DACs are FAR more expensive than chipset DACs with the exception of the bottom three DACs in the Denafrips DAC lineup, ranging from $1K to $2K.

Basically,5.1 /7.1 analog output are useless as I don’t own DVD-Audio or SACD.As years go by,these outputs appeared ,disappeared like nobody cares.No issues brought up on this.Just like component video output/input.

I am curious why the UDP900 uses 2 different 8 channel DACs from ESS, since all ESS Sabre chips with the Pro label are 8 channel. Or are they just playing the Audiophile game.

Depending on how its configured, an ESS PRO chip can support mono, stereo, or 8-channel applications, so I'm guessing they wanted that slight bump in quality for any stereo applications, compared to the 7.1 multichannel RCA outputs. But that's just speculation on my part. :)

One DAC 9028Pro for the 7.1 unbalanced RCA connections and a a different DAC 9038Pro for the balanced stereo XLR connections.

HDMI is presented through your amp which is probably room corrected or at least manually adjusted for your room acoustics . To get better bass from a blu ray 7.1 output you have to manually adjust the outputs found in the player’s menu- which would require a sound meter to make the measurements and adjustments. It seems that you overlooked that important part so you have compared apples with oranges. Also from memory I think the entire remastered Star Trek back catalogue is mixed in 7.1 - and utter might be DTS which is even better than Dolby. That would be the TV series up to the Star Trek nemesis movie. After that its all JJ crap and I’m never watching that stuff again.
