Normally, I wouldn't comment this on a youtube video, but since you asked, here are some tips. It's not really music related, but it will make your videos look cleaner and more professional. Try to figure out a way to separate the focus from the background more. Usually people do this by playing with lighting, or the diaphragm of the camera. That's an entire lesson on its own, but in a nutshell, the more light you let in, the shallower depth of field you have, which will blur the background more. As for lighting, you could make yourself slightly brighter than the background. Try to avoid harsh and direct light, the soft light from your window looks fine. Another way to put more emphasis on the subject, in this case, you and the guitar, is to avoid clutter in the background. Sure, a plain white wall might be a bit boring, but try to not have too many distracting things in the back. It's all about finding a good balance. Other than that, I love your videos. I'm currently a college student majoring in music, and I've found your videos well-constructed and very informational. I hope to see more content in the future!

Great video Tyler. I have just recently purchased a book that teaches you the intervals. I didn’t realize until I watched your video that interval training can assist with ear training. Wow! It makes perfect sense now. I can clearly see how the two are connected. Thank You Sir!

I stumbled into your channel not so long ago, but I already think it's one of the best guitar channel on KZbin. I've only seen like a dozen of your vids, but they really helped a lot. Your tuition is really clear and you're doing a great job at being able to talk to beginners and medium-advanced players at the same time without losing one or the other. In fact, I can't really think of anything I could tell you to improve your vids, you're already doing a great job. And still I apreciate the fact that you wanna put more effort into it nonetheless. You rock mate, cheers.

Nettrawler It's the same idea as yoda telling luke that size does matter. Like yes it's bigger and requires better connection to the force, but the technique remains the same. Since we are exposed to the major and minor scales a lot more than other scales, you should probably start with those since you have a deeper familiarity with it. Even if you aren't too aware of it
@27scole

you develop your ear as a side-effect. for example playing vocal lines on the guitar and improvize around it. on 1 or 2 strings so you can intuitively snap the distance and play freely. all the while there is tho no focus on developing your ear cause it would just block the expression which is why it's smth not even to consider cause you're busy anyway. it's just smth fun to do. moreover singing helps a lot too in that regard, yet again ..you guessed it

Idea for a follow up vid. You picked a guitar tone that dropped pretty well into the mix, if you would have went with some super saturated gain it won't have worked as well or helped you find the correct notes as easily. How did you arrive at the tone you picked?

Hi! First of all, let me say you’re a killer guitar player and a great teacher! But, I must say, as a person who is interested in music (and I do play the guitar a bit), I was stuck just recently. See, most guitar teachers (and books) teach you chords, scales, modes etc, and after years of playing all that, if your hearing is good, you should be able to figure out most of the chords/solos etc in your favourite songs & melodies even without the tabs and sheet music and stuff. But as I listen to literally everything, I came across pieces like Christmas Star by John Williams (Home Alone 2 theme.) Or Dance of the sugar-plum fairy…My first impressions were - what the hell is that? That doesn’t sound like anything I ever played. It doesn’t sound like major or minor (I could be wrong?!) So, how can you figure out stuff you don’t understand by just using your ear?? Sounds really difficult, impossible almost 😮‍💨 Once again, this is a great channel, keep it up!

How do you recognise intervals? I've been playing about 7 years and when I play I do recognise different intervals right away, because I know my fretboard and scales. But I'm terrible picking them by ear. I've tried to learn things just by ear numerous times, but I always get it wrong in the end, and have to check the score. After enough trial and error my ears get too tired to pick the dissonances anymore. One problem I know there is that whether things are played with piano or guitar or sung, it sounds different. I can recognise minor third usually when hear it played with guitar (thanks to Ritchie Blackmore I guess)l but not when it's played on piano...

How do you figure out the tunning ?
@HorsemanUnknown
@HorsemanUnknown 7 жыл бұрын
With alot of stuff, just assume standard tuning. But what you want is to try and find the root note. With most songs, there will be this note that kinda feels like the home note. The note that the song settles back onto. Its often the first note in the bar, to give the completion to the setup. Start by listening to some really basic stuff. 4 chord type stuff. You'll notice how the first chord in the 4 four chords will feel like the home note, as everything returns to it, the song often ends on it, etc.
@hotman718
@hotman718 7 жыл бұрын
Yes figure out the root note of a song. For instance let's say a song is playing the chords F, G, Dm, Em. Just by listening to this you know the root would be C because it resolves the melody. The root is base if the beginning and the end of a song.

God, this is fucking hard... I'm all theory and very little ear... I go for the minor pentatonic, then see if it fits aeolian, dorian or phrygian, from that I find the key, and then I pray the Lord things stay put, strictly diatonic and without key changes... xD I can only identify 5ths, probably minor 3rds maybe 4ths, eventually minor 7ths in the octave below, minor 2nds and ,oddly, the tritone... Anything else is blurry, and all these must all have the same root, otherwise my mind stays on the previous interval and can't let it go.

A great ear training is record yourself playing like a 1,4,5..... 1,3,5 etc then say when walking to work, school, college or whatever just listen to it with your headphones. Or if you want to learn how to tune by ear not always relying on a tuner is record the E string then keep playing it etc (make sure it's in tune first duh! ) then apply it to the guitar.

When you were figuring out the interval, was it totally by ear, or did you have some input by knowing which strings you plucked and some kinesthetic sense of the neck?

I recommend reversing the MELODY and RHYTHM segments. Learn the rhythm first. Couple of reasons. 1 - The wrong melody note plat the right rhythmic point is much easier to "Musically Digest" than the reverse, right melody wrong rhythm. 2 - We suck at rhythm, as geetar players. We grow up way too over focused on Harmony (chords) and partial melody stuff (dood, listen to this sick rif). We, collectively, need to woodshed a LOT more on our rhythm than we do on melody or harmony. Thanks for letting the kids know there's more than just blue guitars and tons of pedals to this "Being a musician" thing.☺

Thanks for the video content! Sorry for chiming in, I would appreciate your initial thoughts. Have you heard about - Riddleagan Blossoming Solo Remedy (Sure I saw it on Google)? It is an awesome one off product for mastering guitar scales without the hard work. Ive heard some interesting things about it and my good mate called Gray after many years got great success with it.

Expectedly, after your many, many repeated suggestions to "Use your ears", the kids still ask " How do I figure out what tuning (chord, note, whatever). The concept of musicians that LISTEN to music seems lost on these youngsters.

PandaPlayer123 3 find the lowest note in the song, and match that note with your lowest string, another thing is actually knowing the band, what tuning do they usually use.. just experiment with standard or drop tuning, know what's easier to play with

1st: if I want to learn a metal song by ear....how can I find out which tuning they used? At a lot songs they are using drop tuning. So.....how can I find out which tuning they are using? Then the next step is to find out the riffs ;-)

Recently decided to stop with the mindless shredding exercises and actually learning some theory so I can know how and why stuff sounds good instad of just kinda guessing what sounds good. After this video I checked out your website with the learning programs and jesus man I thought I was gonna have to pay a monthly sub of at least 50 dollars but 10 dollars every month absolutely blew my away. Got yourself subscriber from both your channel and website. Good stuff man!

Play very quiet background music when you're talking. You over enunciate words and your mic gain is too high. It sounds like you're whispering right into our ear which is uncomfortable sounding. Background music could fix this.

I think your new-year goal, with making your videos better, taking it to a new level is a great idea. - I can't wait to see how you're going to improve on your videos and how im going to improve because of your better videos! however i'm asking you to promise me, and everyone else that you don't go into the "linear boring youtube tutorials" like so many other people do. One of the things i like about your videos compared to a lot of other people, is the very seriousness you can hear when you talk of something, but you still have a happy, and slighty humorous approach to your videos, and that's something i really appriciate. You make the boring and tedious easier to cope with, atleast for me. so thank you Tyler! and good luck with your goal! Merry Christmas, and Happy new year!

I've watched at least 20 videos of playing by ear, ALL I mean ALL 80 % is nothing but blah blah blah blah. and the 20% is fair. I would like to watch somebody to show me where to put my fingers and strum the strings in an easy an a very well known song. without all that music theory and the blah blah blah. If you know a video like that, please let me know. I guess we all are here for the same reason, listen the chorus of the guitar, not their blah, blah, blah mouth.
