BLUE GRASS !!!! Classic Blue Grass song and a collection of great musicians and yes , the banjo is the best. The " actor " in the gray sweater with the banjo is Steve Martin , Earl Scruggs is the older guy sitting down and playing the banjo and two of his sons are also playing along with Vince Gill , the ZZ TOP looking guy on keyboards is Leon Russell , and Paul Schafer is the bald guy on piano

In 2002, Scruggs won a Grammy award for a 2001 performance[clarification needed] which featured Steve Martin on second banjo, Albert Lee, Vince Gill, and Randy Scruggs on guitars, Marty Stuart on mandolin, Jerry Douglas on dobro, Leon Russell on organ, Gary Scruggs on harmonica, and Paul Shaffer on piano, among others.

The man in the center is Earl Scruggs(notice the name on the head of the banjo), banjo lead, following in order are: Glen Duncan, fiddle; Randy Scruggs, acoustic guitar; Steve Martin (yes that Steve Martin), 2nd banjo; Vince Gill, 1st electric; Marty Stuart, mandolin; Gary Scruggs (both Gary, oldest, and Randy, middle, are Earl's sons), harmonica; Albert Lee (yes, he is that good, and that is his foot tapping while he tears that guitar up), 2nd electric; back to Earl then to: Paul Schaffer (Letterman band leader), piano; Jerry Douglas, dobro; Leon Russel, organ. Keeping up the whole time is Glenn Worf, bass; Harry Stinson, drums. Some of these guys are ELITE musicians, I mean the best that do it.

Ace! This would be fascinating in the sense that it's a band that's right smack dab in the middle of your generation but I bet you are unaware of it. There is still quite a Bluegrass resurgence in younger generations, although it really was a big phenomenon maybe 15 years ago or something. But it's still a big deal and the band trampled by turtles, is a band that was young when this phenomenon exploded, and so they were playing music from decades before but putting a modern Twist on it, and they were so damn good and from what I understand they're still touring and active. Wait So Long is a fantastic introduction to them and a fan favorite and a hit for them in that genre. The studio cut is great as is, but there is a music video version that is basically them sitting around in a room playing it. And both are quite fascinating. Here is a link to the music video version, I bet you would absolutely love this: m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHjLXnisor-JebM&pp=ygUgdHJhbXBsZWQgYnkgdHVydGxlcyB3YWl0IHNvIGxvbmc%3D

If you didn't know, Earl Scruggs invented this style of banjo picking years ago. All subsequent bluegrass banjo players play in this style, called "Scruggs picking". This breakdown, an instrumental composition where all the musicians take turns soloing, is Scrugg's most famous piece, as it was used as the main theme for the movie "Bonnie & Clyde". Every player here is famous. The white-haired guy is Leon Russell, who has a very long and illustrious career as a pianist, writer, singer, arranger, band leader, etc. Vince Gill on electric guitar, Marty Stuart on mandolin, Steve Martin on banjo also, Paul Schaefer on piano, others I recognize but can't recall names.

Ha ha, I think of ZZ Top when I see this, too. I see that somebody else mentioned that this guy was Leon Russell. Yeah, that was Earl Scruggs sitting. He had quite a life. He survived a plane crash, a terrible auto wreck that messed up his hips and put him in the hospital for about three months. One of his sons died by suicide. Still, he carried on, so that's role model stuff. Earl Scruggs also came out against the Vietnam war, which made me look up to him even more. Protesting our involvement in a war wouldn't be the done thing for someone in the country music genre, so I imagine that put him on the outs with some of his own folks. He said what he thought was the right thing to say, though, and that says a lot about a person. I'm from the DC area, and country music has not historically been my thing, but I love this song, and I admire Earl Scruggs. I just wish I knew more about him when he was still alive.

Cousin It, aka Leon Russell, leaves me thinking of that one guy in The Oak Ridge Boys. But Russell rose to legendary status for his work with dozens of legends during his career, including J.J. Cale, Ronnie Hawkins, Ricky Nelson, Joe Cocker, Ray Charles, Eric Clapton, Elton John, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, and the Rolling Stones.

Fun fact: Earl Scruggs brought us the "three finger picking" style of banjo and Steve Martin, (who has also played the banjo for half a century) brought back the "claw hammer" style. Not just for a reaction, but for anyone in the comments who is interested, go check out "Me and Paul Revere". It is a true retelling of the midnight ride of Paul Revere, told from the horses perspective! Steve also often tours with the Steep Canyon Rangers, a bluegrass band. (Steve also wrote a hymnal for atheists called "Atheists Don't Have No Songs. He performs it acapella with the Steep Canyon Rangers. That's hilarious and is worth a look-see!)

Earl was in Flatt and Scruggs with guitarist/singer Lester Flatt. Earl and Steve Martin weren't playing with a flat guitar pick. They're finger picking with a thumb pick for volume and to protect the thumb. It's known as Scruggs picking, he invented the technique.

I went to the Kentucky ROMP festival the second time with my wife and a big tent. Del McCoury and then Marty Stewart were to be the last bands of the night. It started raining and then pouring. They had big wooden covered areas for picnics and the two bands got together and played in there. They did their own songs back and forth or jams together. I was so close to the front where folks stood and it was amazing! Got to the tent and it had so much rain and weight it broke a tent pole. I so miss having a mandolin.
