The music score accompanying these silent films was always SO enjoyable! It greatly enhanced these films. 🎼
@egalitarian-rex13 сағат бұрын
Silent movies by definition had no music score. The music we’re hearing in these clips has been added and serves as a rough approximation of what the audience heard played live by an organist or pianist in each individual theater. In most cases, prior to silent pictures, theatres were used for civic events, plays, concerts and vaudeville. As such, they had an orchestra pit or other designated area for instruments. In the beginning of the silent film era most theaters paid someone local to play music and the best of those would watch the movie and match what they played with the action on screen. Soft, romantic, fast, suspenseful, sinister, and eerie. Whatever fit the film. If you went to see a “picture show” and the musician(s) weren’t present for some reason then you truly sat in silence and hoped some hayseed wasn’t reading the captions aloud.

People always make it sound like pre-code movies were a wild era where anything was acceptable, but from what I've seen, most of them were no more wild than after the code.
@GR464045 күн бұрын
No, they could do things pre-Code they could not do post-Code. In "Night Nurse", for instance, the heroine (Barbara Stanwyck) is saved by a nice bootlegger, who also has the villain (Clark Gable!) murdered, just to seal the happy ending. There are also a scene or two of Stanwyck and Joan Blondell in their underwear that could not have been done after the Code.

the language sometimes used was way in excess of what the code allowed or did not allow to be more on point. even bad grammar was disallowed, poor example for the children they said.

You could no longer show drug use until the 50s. You couldn't kiss for more than a few seconds. You couldn't live together or sleep together unless married. The killer had to die or go to jail at the end. In an early 30s musical Ginger Rogers visits her friends in nice clothes. She says "If he (her boyfriend) could see me in clothes. Her friend says "He wouldn't recognize you" A moral code no no.

In terms of today's standards of the 2020s, Pre-Code films seem tame. The "nudity" is mostly implied, like here in the tub. We see more than that now on daytime TV shows, sometimes. But there were some Pre-Code films that included actual naked breasts, briefly- actual frontal nudity, briefly. There were many films that strongly implied pre-marital sexual relations; women of power having casual sex with several men; men and women who were not married living together "and everything." There were depictions or implications of homosexuality in many Pre-Code films. The Code clamped down hard on ALL of those things. No sexual innuendo to imply any premarital relations (unless they were punished for it, because that's a no-no!). No gay content of any kind. No actual nudity for sure, and implied nudity was extra carefully super duper implied, rather than shown. So, yeah: The Code made a huge difference. Eventually it was relaxed, ignored, and done away with. But for a good 20-30 years or so, it had a huge impact on American film-making.

Certainly an odd item. By 1930 there don't seem to have been any silent films produced in Hollywood, excepting only Chaplin's CITY LIGHTS (he was his own boss and could do what he wanted) and Murnau's CITY GIRL, which was shot two years earlier but the studio 'sat on it'. What this must have been was a silent version of a talkie, which were still being done then -- there were some small-town theaters that hadn't converted to sound yet, so studios recut some of there movies, put intertitles on them, and shipped them out as silents. But that didn't last very long -- I'd be amazed if it even lasted into 1931.

I'm no more a fan of _KZbin_ clickbait, but the title of this presentation, _Early 1930 nude scene pre code,_ was not inaccurate. There was no (or I should say very rare) explicit nudity in U.S. cinema in those days; you have to bear in perspective the reality of the late 1920s-early 1930s, and the scene shown here was as close to "nudity" as one could get. The USA was, and still is, a sexually repressed society - not that nudity should be considered a synonym for sexuality - and if filmmakers were to show anything more explicit than what is in this scene, they could expect a figurative tarring and feathering from "moral" society. .
