Early Blu-rays Failing? Or Did I Just Get Two Bad Discs?

Are older Blu-rays starting to fail, is this a FOX Blu-ray problem?

It's a Fox blu ray problem. My copy of Alien³ and Alien resurrection from the 2012 anthology release is having the same issue, it does the fox home entertainment logo and copyright then black screens, sometimes it will pull up the resume playback option and I can then access the menu. But most of the time it's just black screen.

@@DharmaOutlaw I'm going through my fox 4ks looks like 150-200 titles to go through, I doubt any of the 4ks will have issues now, but who knows.

It's funny. I'm 44, in the UK. I have never seen disc rot. In pressed CD, DVD or Blu-ray. I know of famous examples of manufacturing issues that resulted in disc failures, and that's it. I have CDs as old as me, yet when I scan the CDs using tools that look at the levels of errors, I find nothing concerning. I have been using recordable optical media since 1997 ish and currently use BD-R and BD-RE mostly. Even there, with organic DVD+R and CD-R or inorganic BD-R I have not seen anything that could be called rot. A year ago I was excited that I thought I finally had. A pressed DVD of mine came out of its case with a strange milky misty looking data side. Scanning it in a drive showed huge amounts of errors, it wouldn't even play in a dvd player. Finally this must have happened to me? Nope, turned out it was a layer of oil that had deposited on the disc. It had leached out of the case. It was wiped away in the sink with washing up liquid followed by a wipe with isopropyl alcohol. The errors were gone and the disc was again shiny like a mirror. Then again, I found I had a disc or two that had reading issues or strange errors. This time no milky coating, no real sign of fingerprints and no concerns about scratches either. So, I washed those too, a simple wipe with soapy water and a wipe with IPA. Issues resolved. But I keep hearing about disc rot and failing discs and seeing photos too. From, America. So, is it your environment? Have you been given badly made discs? Is your air conditioning to blame? Is your indoor humidity no higher than 50%? Perhaps try wiping the discs clean with soapy water and IPA?

@dlarge6502 thing is, I'm from UK too and have had a couple of yellowed dvds, and just standard blu rays that just won't play. But I have bought them second hand, all the ones I've bought new are still fine!!

That movie on blu ray Just married didn't work for me either back in 2020. I ended up repurchashing it. That movie specifically could be the issue.

My 2008 blu-ray of Cloverfield stopped working a couple years ago. The bottom of the disc looked all yellow. Fortunately, it was right when they released that slick looking 4K of the movie, so I bought that to replace it.

Of all of my roughly 1000 movies, I know of only two which have stopped working. One is the US release of Total Recall from 2006 by Lionsgate. The disc itself looks fine, but it won't read in any of my players or the Blu-ray drive in my PC. The other is the Australian release of Bridge to Terabithia from 2007 by Disney. Again, the disc looks fine, although from memory it might have a very tiny scratch on it. I was only able to rip the files for the menus and special features, but the main movie always fails to rip and the disc doesn't read in my players. I have several other discs from the time period which still work perfectly.

I just checked and What Happens in Vegas / Just Married [Blu-Ray] works fine. I have had the same problem that you described with Happily N'Ever After. I purchased it several times and it never worked.

I figured that version might work being a diffrent release. Thanks for checking. The only one listed right now is 50 bucks still hopefully I can get refunded on these two. It sucks that it happened to you, that’s a hard one too can’t see it getting a rerelease anytime soon.

I’ve bought Happily N’Ever After like 4 times already and all with the same issue. Everytime I see it at stores; I almost want to tell the clerk if they could test the disc beforehand.

I was looking for that version and Amazon shows not available eBay had one for 50 bucks. I had to go to Blu-ray.com and that took me to an Amazon link 12 bucks new, thanks for letting me know. Should have it by Friday. People are saying that version works great.

I've had a bunch of early wb brand DVDs fail to disc rot. I hope blue ray doesn't become an issue next. If so I guess we all go back to VHS baby!

VHS has never let me down and still works to this very day. My VCR has outlasted two DVD players, three blu-ray players, and one 4K player. Over 20 years later and it still works. What does that say about VCR technology from 2002?

I bought a used copy of Walkabout on eBay, and it works just fine - right up until it gets to the chapter with the nudity. God Dammit. Apparently it's a known issue, and I learned about bronzing for the first time.

DVD manufacturers back then had people who actually knew what they were doing. Disc fail rate on blu-rays and 4k's are worrying and makes me think I should have stayed with DVD's all along. The only DVD I ever had a problem with was Dario Argento's Mother of Tears. The disc was melted on the info side. I took it back to Newbury Comics where I bought it from, showed it to the employee. Normally they don't take back opened merchandise, but upon seeing a true defect and I had my receipt, he was willing to switch it out. I was lucky that day, Newbury's had one more copy of Mother of Tears. This was back when a brand new DVD from Anchor Bay would retail for $8 dollars.

Crazy that it was melted and awesome that it was replaced! I used to love going to Newbury comics when I lived in Rhode Island they had two locations. The one in the mall wasn’t great felt like a mom and pop GameStop. But their standalone store was great I picked up all the seasons of friends on dvd for a decent price.

The idea of disc rot scares the hell out of me. But I made the jump from VHS to DVD probably around 2003, and I know those early DVDs I picked up still work great. I've had cases dry rot and need replaced, but no DVDs that I know of. But I am scared that I'll find one one day.

It sucks and crazy to think that I have probably VHS over 30 years old DVDs at least 25 years still rocking and rolling. I've joked but seriously thinking the next format should be a cartridge based..... I have Atari games that work perfect haha

Im sorry this happened to you. I just payed about 90 for an oop blu ray of Keeping the faith from Australia. I hope that works when it arrives. I also just payed 35 for The Star Chamber on Blu-ray and luckily that worked, though with that picture quality, it might as well been a dvd

Thanks this was the first time it happened to me, but many comments on this video of similar issues with different discs. Also it’s a known issue with John Tucker Must Die Blu-ray. This is going to cause me to double check any OOP title hope yours works flawlessly.

That sounds like a defect or how it was made. My copy works just watched it the other day, and I asked my brother to check his he said it works fine. I think you'd be ok getting another one.

I’ve gone through 3 copies of the original 20th anniversary Lionsgate release of Monster Squad and all 3 had issues. Over time 2 quit playing completely and 1 will play all the way up to the last 6 minutes of the movie, freeze and return to the main menu.

rough man and an excellent movie. I have the old Olive films blu-ray no issues. The Kino Lorber 4k also has a blu-ray might be worth getting that version if you haven't already.

@ the 4k was a day 1 buy for me when it was announced. Out of a collection of nearly 3000 blu rays, that’s the only movie I’ve bought (multiple times) and had it do that. I had similar results as you when testing in multiple players. My 4k players recognize what movie it is but refused to play, only a black screen. Kind of reminds me of the old FlexPlay self destructing dvds.

I've never had problems with any Blu-ray title. DVDs? Sure. Soul Man crapped out. 2 copies of My Best Friends Girlfriend didn't work. Wild Life is loosing its disc artwork but still works.

I just ordered this as a blu ray two pack with What Happens in Vegas for 12.99, will see if both movies play. In general I’ve never had any issues, I have CDs that I bought 35 years ago that still play fine and no visible rot.

I’ve had no issues with any of my old cds or DVDs that I’ve had since the 90s. This really threw me for a loop. Glad you found one so cheap, I suspect both films are in one disc and probably would play.

I still have my legally blonde dvd I bought in 2005, and it still plays I have several blurays, but Coco from 2016 is the only one that started to have a glitch during playback

I've mostly seen rotting on newer dvds. Adhesive letting go. Only time I've seen blu rays go bad is when they stored poorly

I tried watching a blu ray from universal where it was trying to connect to BD Live or something and couldn't get a connecting so it was in some kind of endless loop. I had to disable network for it to load. And Crank 2 would only play on my player if I plugged in a USB drive cause that was the fix for that one.

I had that BD live issues with Get Him to the Greek. The way I could get it to work was on an older Blu-ray player not connected to the internet. My 4k player just was stuck in that same loop. I just tried the USB trick no luck.

Yeah very unfortunate and honestly never loved the idea of any company buying up everything, but I never expected them to leave money on the table. Massive back catalog some movies would print money.

Probably because of the cheap cases that came out for current dvds and blurays. It’s very thin plastic compared to the original dvd cases. Now temperatures can affect discs more negatively because of it.

I too think that is the culprit. These discs were in the cheap eco cases zero protection. When I get those cases I replace them immediately.

Over the years, I've had 6 WB HD DVDs crash & I've replaced them with BD. I've had several WB DVDs released 2006-09 go bad and it's worst when they're OOP and not available on BD. I bought "Command Decision" three times (all original releases) before getting a WB Archive Collection issue. No problems. Supposedly, WB releases from certain plant during a specific time period, are prone to go bad. Your copy of Just Married was released by 20th Century Fox & hopefully its an isolated problem.

I bought the original RLJE DVD of All Hallows Eve with the slipcover and works great. I've watched it 4 times already and no issues whatsoever.

Absolutely go test out your old blurays and let the people know your findings. Blurays were advertised to be more durable than dvds.

The original release of the devil's rejects the one with the shiny cover is completely dead. Every copy, pretty much, except for maybe a couple of real lucky ones have been killed. I had one I had to replace it with a the same version, but a newer release, so they re-released it in like 20oneone or something and that one works fine. But the original 2007 release. I think it was is dead. So yeah, lionsgate apparently did a lot of really shitty blu rays in 06 07

I have also 2 blueray disk not 4 k but the older they had disk rot do not work anymore disk from years a go it was gravity and the other do not no the name anymore. Rothingdisk yes

I guess. I have seen the bronzing and horrible looking discs at thrift stores, but never in my collection. These discs look perfect they just don't work, so I can't even be sure if its rot or maybe early stages or something.

I have owned as many as 3,000 discs -- D.V.D.s, Blu-ray Discs, and 4K U.H.D. Discs. Only ONE disc stopped working -- a copy of Napoleon Dynamite on Blu-ray. The movie "rotted." The disc looked BRONZE. I replaced it...but I stopped worrying about "disc rot."

Good thing it was replaceable, I’m more frustrated than worried. Interestingly enough these discs aren’t showing any bronzing, and several other people have left comments that theirs isn’t working either.
