I agree that Caballe was one of the very greatest singers of the last century. I think impeccable technique and phenomenal floating high notes made her unique. However my absolute favourite 20th C soprano was another Spaniard, the fabulous Victoria de los Angeles, whose voice I think is the MOST beautiful of all. I fell in love with her voice as a young boy of 12 in 1958 through her recordings.
@roseannereddy96873 жыл бұрын
Ah, Victoria and her angelic, fragile, heartbreaking voice... Montsy and her beautiful, soaring, musical virtuosity! Who can compare the two? They enchant me in different ways.
@gleong3 жыл бұрын
@@roseannereddy9687 HI you misunderstand me. Not comparing at all, just saying that my favourite soprano growing up was VdA. I remember what a sensation Caballe was. I was studying in London 1975-1976 and people would camp outside the box office just to get tickets for Caballe, so great was her fame and the British opera lover adored her. It was a wonderful time. One could be at the Salisbury Hotel and two stools down was Dame Peggy Ashcroft scoffing a sandwich before curtain up. And those lovely Sunday Night Recitals at Covent Garden and I remember one night I had tickets for Tereza Berganza, only to find out she was ill. My disappointment turned to intense pleasure when the soprano replacing her was Margaret Price (who I had not heard of before that evening.). Another story like that was at the concert performance of Donizetti's Rosamunda d'Inghilterra at the South Bank Concert Hall. The Rosamunde (whose name is long forgotten) was announced as indisposed and at last minute, young Australian soprano at the beginning of her career Yvonne Kenny stepped in. She was a revelation. Sorry i have gone on.

@@SymphonyBrahms Oh yes, those wonderful recordings. The sublime Beecham Boheme was one of my very first three complete LP opera sets as a 12 year old. My next three VdlA complete opera sets were Faust (which she was supposed to have made with Bjoerling rather than his compatriot Gedda), Carmen (with Beecham again and Gedda) and a less convincing Traviata, slightly dodgy coloratura in Sempre Libera, but still incredibly heartbreakingly beautiful and moving, especially in the act 2 duet with the elder Germont (was that Mario Sereni?)

Of course, when it comes to technique, Sutherland was magnificent, but after I got over how fast she could sing, she bored me to tears. I remember a performance of Sonambula where I had to restrain myself from leaving because how boring the whole thing was but restrained myself waiting for Ah Non Giunge at the end. I did stay, waited, and when the famed cabaletta came, the lady delivered. Sonambula is a very pretty musical work and deserves better from an artist than just a bravura finale that makes the audience scream.

Cabelle was perfection....her performances opened and revealed heaven to those of us who here on earth search for that beauty in another soul...the fact that she never considered herself as above others in the performances and operas she performed in was key for me...her mission was her passion and dedication to opera not just the art and artists including musicians but moreover her unrelenting command that each and every musician and artist bring to life the intent of each composer....it was the responsibility of every single individual to dig into the deepest part of their soul to ask themselves Can i do better Am i communicating to the very best of my ability to communicate each and every pause every note the intended emotion this composer was pouring his soul into conveying to each listener....that was her true dedication out of complete respect for the fine art of opera....every single person made up one whole performance she never thought or treated her cast or musicians as if their duty was to showcase her personally, on the contrary....everyone had a duty and responsibility to honor those who came before them as well as ensuring the beauty and beckoning of opera was never lost fused forgotten or weakened....her loyalty is and always will ensure opera will never require trendy here now gone tomorrow gauche renditions to draw fan base but will always be seated as the finest of the finest of the human spirit.

¿Perdona?
