Try not to do vertical ascent but do diagonal ascent. When speed is 100 m/s, turn the degrees. Don't do your circularization too early, or it will be a weird orbit. orbit. do it too late, and it will be a weird orbit. You could use the mission control thing and burn t minus 30-60 we one a to the progress marker. Hope this helps, and don't forget to watch an actual professional tutorial, like Scott Manley or matte lowne.

I made a low tech ssto which can get into orbit around the mun and back. It's a monstrosity XD. I used the "test the panther" contract to get better jet engines for the mission. The same plane could take 4 tourist to the mun with a flyby (replaced some tanks with inline mk1 cockpits )

This is pretty close to how I run my Career mode SSTOs. I never found them very difficult to build but they all come out looking very similar. Every time I try to make something that looks cool or funky is when it goes to hell. Like an SSTO flying wing design I tried. I was hoping to get a plane that could glide half way around Kerbin on no fuel. so I could de-orbit from any point.

( i was on 30~45° up during reentry he started to flips in between 50-40km hight ) and second, just for a best fuel efficiency could u notice when do u switch the dry/wet mode on the rocket engines during ascent ? :) once again very good job continue like that u r doing great ! scott manley should be jealous !

I'm trying to make a small Mun passenger ssto with an in-line docking port my constant in all my designs for this so far is a mk1 cockpit, an in-line docking port, a mk1 crew cabin, and some 400 batteries and rcs with small monoprop tanks. And other than the docking port, I'm trying to make it as low tech as I can. Unfortunately I'm not good at designing SSTOs in general, much less low tech ones that can land on the Mun and return without aerobraking. (If you can get to the Mun, you can slingshot off it to get to interplanetary space, going as far as Duna with no mid course corrections)

Hey Mark, Thank you for your other answer the last day. Regarding this video i have a question as well ;) What doas it depends on, at wich altitude you initiate the rocket burn? the Air intake and/or the Jet engines?
@MarkThrimm
@MarkThrimm 7 жыл бұрын
It depends on how the plane was designed in short, but as you have guessed correctly it depends on jet engine performance. Every engine has a different thrust curve so you basically need to figure out how to get maximum velocity and altitude out of it, and add enough rocket fuel and engines to continue from there. Since each plane here is different, rocket engines are fired up at different altitudes. If you take the Dove for example, it has basic Juno engines and can barely climb out of the thickest part of the atmosphere, so you need to have the entire orbital velocity in rocket mode but you get lower drag losses. As a counter example, a rocket SSTO needs to have around 3.5 km/s to make it into orbit, so you loose 1200m/s to drag and altitude change, roughly speaking. I'm sorry if it's not clear but it's hard to explain without going into details and I tend to overstress the details too :)

@Antiwindowscatalog
@Antiwindowscatalog 8 жыл бұрын
Since Ferram Aerospace was mentioned a few times and also because I use it, I took a stab at modifying Mark's low tech space planes for use there. www.antiwindowscatalog.com/media/ksp/lts-dove-far-v3_92.zip www.antiwindowscatalog.com/media/ksp/lts-sparrow-far-v1_6.zip www.antiwindowscatalog.com/media/ksp/lts-kestrel-far-v4_3.zip General usage help: Take-off (eh?): Accelerate at full speed to the end of the runway, then raise the gear as you 'fall off' the runway and pitch up. This seems to help with the funny 1.1.3 landing gear. Climb: Start your climb right away to avoid high dynamic pressure. Use DPCR to avoid overstressing the air frame, and only turn that off if you find you can't turn. Even then, be really, really gentle with those controls. Avoid angle of attack greater than 10 degrees. Leaving the atmosphere: Try for double the suggested altitude before lighting the main engines, except for the Kestrel-F. Do that one normally. Orbit: Try to keep apoapsis under 72 km at first. The Dove is really tricky because the Terriers have low thrust. You will need to start closing your orbit pretty early. Re-entry: Use a very high angle of attack, even point radial-out until you get a feel for it. Shift fuel around; sadly, this means a research lab upgrade. You will start tumbling at one point, so shift fuel forward and use SAS to help find prograde. Landing: Oh boy... imagine landing on an aircraft carrier at Mach 1. These things will have a lot of speed on approach. Level flight at 90-100 m, then deploy drogues a good 3-4 seconds before passing over the runway. Even then it's up to some luck. Drogues should deploy fully at under 50 m from ground. Good luck. Use probe cores unless you like killing your pilots. --

@Mark Thrimm Question: for the LTS Sparrow, couldn't you just use a Mk 1 Cockpit instead of an inline cockpit behind a nose cone? If you got a reason why you used that design, I'm all ears.

Great video, helped me a lot in my career mode. I'm currently trying to build Kestrel by myself using only your video as a guide. How did you managed to balance that plane? It seems that following your design the center of mass (regardless if the cargo hold is empty or not) is always behind the centre of lift? Is there any part that is not visible on the video?
@dzejrid
@dzejrid 7 жыл бұрын
Ok, it seems that after much of the fine tuning in the wing/engine area and moving some parts slightly forward or backwards I was able to achieve neutral stability with an empty cargo hold. But damn, that was a LOT of work! :)

Appreciated, but I wouldn't have learned anything if I just got the ready solution :) One other thing I found out is that with my meager piloting skill the plane has not enough fuel left for atmospheric landing. I ended up gliding over the ocean and having to do a splash landing. Any tips on how to manage orbital insertion (angle/height) efficiently with this design?
@die1mayer
@die1mayer 7 жыл бұрын
My attempt at a low-tech SSTO doesn't look anything like that, it is much bigger, uses 8 medium-sized turbojet engines which it decouples at high altitude to cut weight and has 3 rocket engines (the non-swivel one) with a ton of fuel. Still not enough to get into orbit through, but fast to get to any point at Kerbin with sub-orbital jump.

Very cool! I was trying to make an SSTO myslef, they're great for rexscue missions, but i just can't get there. There are always two scenarios - either i don't have enough fuel and don't make it to orbit, so i add more fuel, but then the engines don't make it. And if i add more/stronger engines, the first case follows. What am i doing wrong?

Probably nothing :) It happens all the time if you're not paying attention to your TWR and not calculating your deltaV after each iteration. But don't worry, my beginnings were exactly the same. That is why I decided at some point to solve this problem with science, which is summarized in my tutorial series. I outlined the method I use to design my SSTOs there and you can see how that works out from my other videos. Check it out: kzbin.info/aero/PLhvGL3FPEICcjypPZof9V-6ukR-6Oc7la

It happens quite often, that's why there are two pairs of landing gears. Just keep one for landing. It's the charm of 1.1 wheels. Alternatively, you can just replace them with bigger version, it will work just fine.

Every time I try to make an SSTO, at the stage where I activate rocket engines, fucking oxidizer runs out because the jet engines draw fuel from my rocket fuel tanks. How do I fix that?
@MarkThrimm
@MarkThrimm 8 жыл бұрын
Well you can use fuel ducts to connect liquid fuel tanks to rocket fuel tanks. But that depends on the engine. Jet engines draw fuel from each tank in your vessel at the same time, (and rapiers even in closed cycle), while rocket engines only draw fuel from tanks they are connected to directly and from top to bottom. So one solution is adding a liquid fuel tank for jet fuel and connecting it to the rocket engine tanks through fuel ducts.

The Sparrow has the opposite problem from the Dove in that it wants to pitch up rather than pitch down between 60 and 20 km, and the 'neck' snaps off at about 24 km. I think once I figure out where to balance the fuel load, I'll get the descent right.

Here's one attempt at the Sparrow modified for FAR: www.antiwindowscatalog.com/media/ksp/lts-sparrow-far-v1.zip This craft doesn't like to fly straight at higher altitudes in FAR's upper atmosphere, so some kind of probe for autopilot was needed. The vectoring capability of the Swivel engines helps a lot. In the lower air it's only really stable above Mach 0.4, but it is stable with the extra tail planes. Finally added drogue chutes that deploy at 500 m; the thing is such a dart on approach it needs air brakes or chutes, and you need to be just above the runway when you deploy them. I might need to move the chutes lower and move the rear wheels back some. However, it's very stable on re-entry now. If you can get the centre of mass between the two Mk2 rocket fuel fuselages, it'll fall somewhat gracefully until about 14 km, then it loses control until you get some thrust back.

Something I don't understand : I keep comparing small engines to larger engines and I always notice that adding up several small engines weighs more and has less thrust than the single bigger engine. So I always use the big engine. But then I see designes like this that use plenty of small engines. What is this wizardry?

I think this has more to do with moving the huge amount of mass quickly. The Dove's heaviest components are the fuel and oxidizer, and having eight Juno engines pushes that mass easier than just two or four would.-- You still really can't exceed Mach 1 by much with the Juno engines alone; they seem to be mostly used to get the craft above 5 km so the Reliant and Terriers are more efficient. Though with FAR installed I managed to reach 10 km before needing to ignite the rockets.-- I found I needed to circlularize very quickly though, even starting to close my orbit at the 61 km mark. The Terriers need that much time to work.

Have the game mechanics changed since this video? I can't seem to get anywhere near orbit with a similar SSTO.

There's no way I can get the Kestral to 700+ m/s at 16km as in the video on the jet engine stage. I guess the game has changed recently.

Hello, apparently many other people experience the same problem. I flew it into orbit in the newest version of the game in order to help you out with the ascent profile, video link is here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aHesfKx4bpKro6s

No matter what I do I can't seem to get the kestrel into anything even close to an orbital projectory, even after rebuilding it myself, have there been many changes to the game since this video was released that 's causing this?

I can't seem to reproduce your issue. If you want a bit more info about flying this kind of SSTOs, I'd suggest watching this episode of my playthrough series: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r3SchZ6opLuelZY&list=PLhvGL3FPEICeO0PqN90SxFps113QSOKra&index=3 . Good luck and I hope that helps.

Is it possible to build a rocket-power only ssto that can land on most of the landable planets? I find it it hard to make at a small size.

@HeadCannonPrime
@HeadCannonPrime 7 жыл бұрын
you have to have some kind of retractable landing or it will just burn up on entry and have too much drag at high speed. I made one with landing gear that dropped off after takeoff and landed with parachutes because I suck at landing.

At 10-12 km, depends on the fuel level and velocity. But if you do it somewhere around those altitudes it should be fine.

If I can suggest watching my tutorials or Subscriber Designs series, there are SSTOs there that can go to the Mun, Duna and even Laythe - and in most cases all of the details about their design is given. Good luck!
