Hey Prof Dave. Is brain size a predictor of intellect in modern humans? It seems like when we look at ancient animals, we can say "oh, they must've been smart enough to make and use tools cuz they had larger brains than other similar animals". Is this true today? If I compare Albert Einstein's brain to Kent Hovind, will there be a physical difference in mass/volume/etc? Thanks, Prof Dave!
@brabanthallen6 ай бұрын
Brain size does not necessarily associate with intelligence. The Neanderthals had slightly larger brain sizes than modern Homo Sapiens. Does that mean they were smarter than us? No, not necessarily. Many anthropologists believe that our modern brains are only smaller than Neanderthal's due to streamlining of our brains, they've become more efficient, so the size has decreased. Despite having slightly smaller brain cases than Neanderthal, we have produced much more sophisticated tools, obviously. Homo Sapiens put men on the moon while Neanderthal was flint knapping primitive spearheads.
@charliedoyle78246 ай бұрын
Human intelligence isn't well understood yet. It's likely the final frontier of understanding how our bodies work. "Intellect" is also a bit of a mushy term. Kent Hovind could be a smart guy in some ways, but one who has dedicated his life to believing a few weird stories. It's like Shockley, the brilliant scientist/engineer who invented the transistor and did a lot of other great work, but who dedicated much of his life to scientific racism. Was he "smart"? Was Tesla smart, with his two great inventions, and his crank ideas late in life? Newton was as smart as Einstein, but he believed in lots of really weird medieval nonsense, and was a social idiot. How smart was he?
@MossyMozart6 ай бұрын
@@brabanthallen - Brain size is less important than the configuration and connections it has within. But even with Sapiens' improved functions, Neanderthals (and Denisovans) were as "smart" as we are today, whatever your definition is, or just a shade off. --------------- So, don't downplay the Neanderthals. They also invented or at least made string and perhaps could weave it into a net or fabric. They used clothing and bedding - they were smart and realized that clothing keeps them warmer and drier and made the ground more comfy. Even if they didn't sew, they could use their string or narrow strips of leather as fasteners. (I bet older Homo folks used clothing and bedding, to.) Like older Homo before them, they used fire to cook and for warmth and light. They invented cave painting, jewelry (Denisovans were good there, too), and probably body art. They had spears. They buried their dead (probably older Homo did, too). They lived for a longer time than Sapiens have yet done. --------------- Sapiens didn't invent our culture from the ground up; it was built on the shoulders of what Neanderthals and Denisovans knew. They even built children from Neanderthal and Denisovan DNA! I would not say that those groups went extinct, but that they *_merged_* with Sapiens and are still alive within most of us.
@thychozwart24515 ай бұрын
Brain size and intelligence have relatively little to do with each other within a species, though interspecies the larger brained animal (relative to body size) is probably the smarter animal. There are exceptions of course, like octopodes, who have small brains compared to vertebrates but are a lot more intelligent than most of them. Also fun fact: Albert Einstein's brain actually ranged low in modern human averages, his volume was around 1230 cc, in a range between 1150 and 1450 cc that's pretty low, but he's one of the most intelligent people to have lived.

Just saying first that, im not a creationist or a science denier, im just curious of one thing (actually multiple): how did very separated species of hominids figure out how to make stone tools, like knifes and axes and stuff? Did they have a small amount of connection and that allowed for some prehistoric trade like route between the different hominid species? Was it a very easy thing to do that every hominid species could do it almost the same way? Some honest questions that i had for a long time watching your videos 👍
