My Classical guitar teacher was also a Luthier and made guitars as well as "Early Instruments," including the Viola de Gamba, which I had the opportunity to try. It's worth noting that the main 6 Courses of the Renaissance Lute are also tuned to the same pitches as the Tenor Viola de Gamba: G-c-f-a-d'-g' and both instruments have movable frets made of Gut which are tied around the Neck. I enjoy your "Historical" videos and hope you continue to make more of them. Thanks

early versions of the endpin existed already in the 18th century, both for the cello and for the gamba. holding a cello or a gamba between your legs should not hurt! if it hurts you are doing it wrong. the legs are simply positioned like a cradle, the instrument simply laying there, relatively free. if you were to strain your legs, they would quickly start shaking, resulting in a poor tone. the viol is also not the predecessor of modern string instruments (except for, debatably, some forms of the double bass). the real ancestor of the violin family is the rebec/medieval fiddle, which was played all the way into the early 17th century in some regions. the viol has a closer common ancestor with the guitar than with the violin: the vihuela, an instrument originally played in renaissance spain, although some modern research argues against that

I remember reading somewhere in the series of books titled "The Way They Play" someone said La Romanesca was one of the first compositions for violin - I don't remember who it was an interview with, this sparked my interest and two of the cds I thought were interesting were Early Italian Violin Sonatas with Elizabeth Wallfisch and Perla Barocca with Rachel Podger which included works by cima 1570 fontana 1571 frescobaldi 1583 castello 1590 marini 1594 uccellini 1603 I can also recommend there are many early violin recordings made by Andrew Manze that are well worth getting I would be interested in discussing the origins of La Folia I know Coreli made famous (Rachamninoff wrote variations for) and and Passacaglia that VonBieber wrote a version of and later by Haydn. I would be interested to talk about the medieval poem Dies Irae that became a gregorian chant and subject matter of music written by Martini and Lully from the early baroque but also many others who came later - to name a few Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Brahms, Mahler, Rachmaninoff , and especially the diaolic Totentanz by Liszt that Rachmaninoff so admired. This is a playlist I created a long time ago kzbin.info/www/bejne/qWPPmJucdpaYjdE This is a more comprehesive list of early violin composers I made a long time ago dowland 1563 piccinini 1566 monteverdi 1567 cima 1570 fontana 1571 praetorius 1571 frescobaldi 1583 schutz 1585 castello 1590 marini 1594 buonamente 1595 uccellini 1603 bertali 1605 cazzati 1616 rosenmuller 1619 schmelzer 1620? Forgive me for suggesting to the contrary, but you should re-think your origins and earlier pedigree of the violin. Hint: Rebec and Vielle. Gambas, though not unrelated, are something different.

I think of the predecessor of the violin as the vielle, which had 3 or 4 strings and held under the chin like a violin.
