Fantastic video, there really isn't all that much information out there about these old bulbs. I actually just made a video about my first time powering up a squirted-cellulose filament lamp, and until watching this video I erroneously referred to it as a bamboo fiber filament. I used a capacitive dropper to current-limit mine to around 300mA (71V at the bulb) initially when I powered it up, and now I have it on permanent display running at 150mA (48V at the bulb), which as you said should burn for a very long time (decades, I hope). Great content and amazing history, thank you!

I only have one, and have no idea exactly what vintage it is. Bought it on ebay. Has a paper tag in the base of the filament says November 28 03. 8 04. So all i know is it’s pre 1910. Has the little nipple on top. Looks identical to the second one from the left in front of you.

I love these early bulbs, although I've never seen one in person. I wonder if they can fry an egg if they were held close by.

Where did the bamboo grow Edison produced the lightbulbs out of commercially? Was it grown in the USA close to the factory or did he import it from Japan?

Pretty good for mass-production, considering bamboo grows faster than you can chop it down.

Nice: vintage collection, i have a collection of lights myself, all of them collecting dust because some are burnt out, some still work, anyway, you are right about that, however afterr certain points in time they continued light bulb filamment tests to find one that would burn brighter, they found out soon after at that point in between the carbon and tugsten filament era was the tantalum filament, the use of tantalum filaments at that point have been used int the titanic when it was built in early 1912 up until 1931 heree they introduced the new lower voltage and built to last even longer tungsten filaments, in 1912 the voltage needed to light homes with tantalum lighting was around the same voltage the europeans used to light their homes, those volts are from 230-250 volts, and in the train and boat lighting voltage ranging from 80volts or more.

Mazda was printed on the light bulbs from 1918 to 1948, from Edison style to almost modern, frosted light bulbs.

I LOVE THESE! I`m a collector Myself, And have quite a collection of some of these. I`m looking to see if there is anyone who would be able to rebuild some of these if there out, I can and have repaired more common ones with some degree of sucsess, BUT I have one that is not so common , It`s a 750 watt 122 volt Edison Mazda strate side with a tip on top! Looks like a very large version of the bulb at 0:09. I`m hoping that You would know of someone? Thanks so much.

I still have one of those 1929 replica lamps. Bought it @ an antique store ~25 years ago. Don't remember exactly how much I paid, but I know it wasn't much.

I know you don't want to burn out the filament and run low current through the light but what is the brightness of the bulb using the lights if today as comparison?

Fascinating video! For that first one you showed (I think it was a GE replica of the 1879 bulb) can you tell me how much DC voltage did he use to run that bulb? Is there a source you know where I can get one of those 1879 replica? Thanks -- Atco

Is it true that Edison devised an adapter which allowed his screw in bulb to fit a competitor's socket, but locked itself in so only Edison bulbs could be used, in that fixture?

Nicola Tesla invented a clever alternative that voided Edison's patents. He invented a loctal base similar to ones used in today's lantern and headlight bulbs
@chadshapiro7861
@chadshapiro7861 6 жыл бұрын
This is completely false. You might be referring to the Westinghouse Stopper but Tesla was gone from Westinghouse when this lamp was invented. Geo Westinghouse is the name on the patent. Tesla had nothing to do with this lamp or any filament based Incan decent lamp.
@Jeffrey314159
@Jeffrey314159 6 жыл бұрын
I just don't think that is entirely accurate. Not counting Tesla's Incandescent (Graphite) Button Lamp, he did work on creating an alternative base for a friend's demonstration of incandescent bulbs
@chadshapiro7861
@chadshapiro7861 6 жыл бұрын
There is no evidence of a lamp base deign by Tesla. Tesla generally did not collaborate with other inventors. By the time Tesla was working on any form of electric lighting, the standards of lamp bases were pretty well defined. Unless you have evidence of such a collaborative effort, I would add it to the pile of Tesla Internet folklore where you can read that Tesla invented anything and everything.
@Jeffrey314159
@Jeffrey314159 6 жыл бұрын
Chad Shapiro, yes I agree that Tesla is being over credited by the youboob crowd and the pop culture, which conversely hates Thomas Edison with as much passion as the leftwing hated(and still hates) President Ronald Reagan. But enough of that, Tesla did invent the Carbon(Graphite) Button incandescent lamp. But since it required high frequency AC current & voltage to work, it never caught on.

The short lifespans of early lightbulbs is such a lie, they will easily last anywhere from hundreds of thousands of hours to well over a million hours if you use ballasting circuitry.
