At Heathrow it's probably between four to six miles separation. Controllers have standard vectors & speeds to final approach- so sometimes it's a little bit of a pattern for them at times.

Yep but people who don't know anything about Aviation don't understand. They only complain when they're holding for 30 minutes!

@HeathrowSpottingHD I was also impresed with the job of ATC. When i saw 20 planes in the schedule landing the same time i was thinking - how's that possible? ;-) I thought the Aircrafts get clearance to land when they are just before those yellow instalations ( markers ) but as you say they get it even later. Wow, knowing that i'm impressed even more.

@deetjay1 Looks close right? On approach the speeds as mostly the same (160knts) until 4DME (4 Miles out). Normally 5 Miles or so between them. Heathrow Director does a fantastic job separating everyone! It's a pattern, which you'd see if you watched the Radar for a good 30 minutes or so. A lot of the times Aircraft don't get clearance to Land until just before hitting the perimeter fence which is a close call for a G/A.
@airbxnee13 жыл бұрын
@HM99AA The Landing Clearance is never at a fixed place. Once the Aircraft just landed and gets handed over to Ground they normally give the next Aircraft Landing clearance which could be 1 or 9 miles out!

Explain it better - there are 4 main ''Stacks (Holding Patterns)" around LHR for LHR which are Bovingdon(BNN), Biggin(BIG), Lambourne(LAM) & Ockham(OCK). You enter them prior to Final approach if the approach is too busy or you have a Landing Restriction time! You can get 5-10 Aircraft in one at a time at all different Flight Levels.

seriously when i fly to heathrow i am socked!! 4 aircrafts landing at the same time hahahahaha

@BlueStar167 Yeah if I could drive I'd always be at LHR this early, it's great. I prefer Winter Light as it's more ''Golden'' but Sun doesn't come up until 8am some Months!

Heathrow desperately needs a third runway for an airport that busy, it does not look like it will happen anytime soon as it is mired in environmental and political disputes.
