I have performed the early neuro stimulation with each litter I have raised. The benefits are phenomenal. They learn faster and have few or no health problems during their life. I highly recommend breeders to learn about this process and utilize the knowledge.

Same study: "One possible explanation for this may well be within the extremely rich GTC socialization program. All puppies are handled daily and are systematically exposed to extensive environmental stimulation. In addition, even the control pups were held by a human being during exposure of the experimental pups to ENS, thus all the dogs experienced handling, thereby suggesting that both handling and exposure, and not specifically ENS, contribute to the outcomes of testing. . . The groups that are most likely to provide insufficient stimulation are ‘‘commercial’’ breeders who focus more on turnover rather than on the quality of puppies, including groups that breed dogs for research use, rescue or shelter organizations that may have limited resources, and working dog organizations with limited personnel and resources, and mandates that require production of extremely large numbers of dog. All these groups may benefit from the structure created from performing the ENS exercises with their pups." Ie: its efficacy may be overstated, but it's not like it's not beneficial, so if it works for you, go for it would be my take. Also, this is one study, not an exhaustive literature search.

What criteria of observation did you use for the evaluation?

I haven't done this with my litters. I do normal stimulation and handling daily. I use normal house noise, vacuum, music, TV. Lights on early and complete darkness for eye development. I use small boxes and steps for skills and human interaction as well as with my other dogs. The other female and male dogs that I have will discipline and play with the pups. This is similar interaction as a pack. Most people that get my pups have other animals so this is extremely important for fundamental development. My dogs and I must be doing a good job since I have several repeat customers and referrals. Having a strong relationship with your females is 1 of the most important aspects also.

I would say a day or two couldn't possibly matter, but the 3-16 day window they specify, is apparently well researched. Since I started my litter 4 days late, on day 7, I am going to go until day 17, or maybe 18 of their life. No doubt the 3 to 16 day window was an average, can't possibly be an absolute, and can't possibly remain totally unaffected by the researchers beliefs and biases.

But I will respond to that there are specific time periods for everything in puppies. They have three fear imprint. And you need to be aware of them because you do not want to expose them to anything that would cause a fear reaction during those periods. You should probably research those. This is done day three two days 16 because that is a period of substantial neurological development. And as she said if something is an additional stressor like tail docking, you would not want to add the additional stress of this.

What if it's winter, I don't think putting them on cold towels is Good. Won't they get sick?

People like all animals do not get sick from the cold. We catch a germ which makes us sick. When people live in warm climates they still get sick. That is an old wives tale. Ask any professional.

If the dog is already stressed (from the effects of the cold from living outside?) then steps like this shouldn't be conducted. If the puppies are inside (with heat) then what difference does it make what the weather is like?

It seems to me like every one of these "exercises" is just triggering the 3 day old puppies fight or flight response. Doing this is obviously cruel. What is the end goal? The "advantage" it gives was never mentioned. I understand the 4000 year old idea that struggle makes strength, but what exactly is the goal here?

There is a measured response in the health of the dogs. This program is being used by the military and by the police now with their dogs. Much of the question that you ask is address during the video but there are other videos on this that you could research.

Did you not listen to the entire video? He states what the "end goal" is: *Stronger heartbeats, *Stronger heart rates, *An adrenaline system that moves faster when they need it, and *More resistance to disease and greater tolerance of stress... for the rest of their lives.

Puppies at age 3-16 days doesnt have the ability to feel the need to "fight or flight", they cant get scared. Only habituated (if you dont stress them to much and "overload" the neurological system). This is why you do these exercises in this particular window of time :)
