Andy heads off to the river Usk in South Wales in the hope of some early season dry fly fishing for brown trout. With the potential for a hatch of the famous March Brown flies, as well as Large Dark Olives, Andy is confident that he'll get some epic dry fly rises over the two days. However, it doesn't always go to plan, so having the ability to throw Jig Streamers is really important too at this early season time of year.
The question is, will the hatch of March Browns happen, or will Andy have to throw the jig streamers? Enjoy: Early Season Brown Trout Fly Fishing The River Usk In South Wales - Dry Fly & Jig Streamers

That was a quality fish on the dry fly, well done Andy! Pretty good start to the season - you landed all the fish you hooked and only missed one take. You've got to love those dodgy weather forecasts. It was Youth Mentored Trout day on Saturday and the forecast said snow in the morning and clearing in the afternoon so Sam and I planned around that. Of course it was sunny in the morning and we fished in snow squalls in the afternoon. We only lasted a couple of hours till we were frozen, but we landed a few, so day#1 mission accomplished.

Definitely glad you did the video Andy, and it gives a true reflection of early season fishing. Appreciate the content because it is so "real" and not dolled up for KZbin. And this time of the year, on a day with little or no hatch three fish is a good result, particularly because two of them were very decent fish.

Nice fish. Amazing isn’t it? They were hammering maggots on the Dove on last day of coarse season (had 21 brownies while I was grayling fishing) but now they’ve gone all coy! Must have a go at streamer fishing 😉

Hi Ian, thanks for the post. Always found it a lot more difficult to fish with a fly in waters where the fish have been fed and now tend to avoid them during Grayling season. Hopefully the trout will switch on soon. Fished high up on the Dove system last weekend and caught plenty of grayling, dry and wet fly but no sign of a BT and this stretch is not fished with maggots. Have caught BT there at same time in previous years, so perhaps they are a little behind even though spring seems further forward this year. Tight lines.

Hi Andy, thanks for the vlog and info within. I go to the Usk once or twice a year and have also experienced the changeable weather and fish behaviour. I've had some great days and some disappointing ones also; maybe this is part of the beauty of fishing this river. Just as a matter of interest, did you fish the beat where you were camped and if so did you cross the river before you started? Looking forward to seeing what happened on your second day, good luck for the rest of the season.
@IBandAndyFishing
@IBandAndyFishing 2 жыл бұрын
Hi David, it's definitely just a product of the time of year, things can be really hit and miss this early in the season. I did fish where I was camped yes, there is a place to cross safely about a quarter of the way up the beat
@DavidSmith-fk3xb
@DavidSmith-fk3xb 2 жыл бұрын
@@IBandAndyFishing Hi Andy, thanks for the reply. I usually fish the same beat a couple of times a year, with a couple of friends. I'm the only one of us that has fished from the same bank that you started from, so am very pleased to get an indirect heads up from you on this. I'm usually fishing later in the year and this bank can get very overgrown with brambles and if the river is up a bit, offers far fewer safe routes of access so has elements of jungle warfare about it but I'm very encouraged that you have identified some very good water that can only be fished effectively from this side. I don't camp there, so I usually work my way down and up from the top of the beat. I'll look out for the crossing point when I'm next there. Thanks again for your valuable perspective.
