In my 20s, fixed position and 50# Black Widow. In my 30s, permanent stands and Mathews Featherlight. In my 40s, ladder stands and Z7x. In my 50s, now, Viper and x-bow. I’m too old to start trying a saddle. The Viper is my favorite way to hunt. It’s whatever is safe, makes you confident, and keeps you coming out to the woods.

Thanks for the honesty. I have no problem with folks making mistakes. I do it all the time. A couple other lessons from this. That deer was very alert so the likelihood of a frontal shot is even worse. Also, looked like a few more yards than I would have been comfortable with. But I do shoot a 45# recurve with 650 grain arrows that is a crap-ton slower than your bow. Close in and calm deer are the best times for it. A frontal shot can work in the right circumstances but it is advanced level work so if you are new, kill a bunch from the side and then consider it. Thanks again for sharing this.

Great recovery on a tough trail. Got to be careful on those warm early season hunts. I hit a September deer in the hindquarter that jumped string, and had to run him down. Luckily I clipped the femoral and he did go down after I jumped him three or four times. So I was on him, he never got ore than 100 yards or so after a jump. But he had bloated by the time I put my hands on him, and I wasn't waiting more than 10 or 15 minutes after he'd jump to follow again, to keep him bleeding.

My first deer I shot was facing me but got lucky and hit an artery near the neck. She only ran 60 yards but she was only 12 yards from me when I shot. I say take what ever shot you're confident shooting. Awesome job finding her.

Great video Catman! Last year I took 2 deer with my ravin r-26 exactly like this except it went in between the right shoulder and neck and came out low on the left side mid rib. Neither deer went 100 yrds. It is a tricky shot but sometimes it’s the only shot presented.

I usually try not to shoot does unless i know they dont have fawns with them which is rare usually i will shoot a yearling early in the season for that reason they usually wont have fawns about a 100lb doe is perfect for early season kill i let those big nannys go for gun season and let them finish milking their fawns make sure they are nice and strong for a winter full of predators
@bambam25332 жыл бұрын
I’m no expert by any means, but I’m pretty sure wildlife biologists help determine start dates for seasons and one of the factors involved is making sure most fawns are old enough to fend for themselves at start of season in case their mom is harvested. If they didn’t do that it would severely hurt the deer population. I think fawns can survive on their own after 60 days, but don’t quote me on that.
@thesouthernlife40612 жыл бұрын
@@bambam2533 can they survive sure do they still feed on their mother yes does still have milk at beginning of bow season alot of the time public land your not allowed to shoot a doe until oct 15 for that reason but private land they let tou do what you want i usually dont shoot does with fawns i let them grow as much as they can before being separated they are still with their mother for a reason when they are ready to go mother will boot them

As a bow hunter myself I probably wouldn't have taken that shot but your a lot better shot than I am! Things happen! 👍🏽
@stickbowsniper2 жыл бұрын
IMO there is no "probably" to it. That shot should not be taken. Cat is right...with all his experience he should have known better. It has zero to do with how good a shot someone is. Deer react/move quickly and that is low percentage shot angle for a quick, ethical kill. Odds are the deer will indeed die, but will travel a long way, have a slow death, and likely not be recovered and/or finished off by coyotes.
