Anyone else here surprised to learn that Valentine's day has been a practice for over 1,000 years? The oldest surviving valentine poem was written by a duke to his wife in 1415. The first commercially printed Valentine's Cards appeared in the 18th century in England and were made on a large scale by mechanical machines printing paper with images hearts, birds, cupids and red roses. These cards were even back then known as "valentines." Other traditions by the 18th century included giving flowers, giving sweets (including candy hearts) and small gifts. A man may write his sweetheart's name on a piece of red, heart shaped paper then pin it on his sleeve hence the saying wearing one's heart on one's sleeve. Name drawing ceremonies were also popular and had been for quite some time by the early 19th century. Here is a quote by Bourne, in his Antiquitates Vulgares (1725): "It is a ceremony, never omitted among the Vulgar, to draw Lots which they Term Valentines, on the Eve before Valentine-day. The names of a select number of one sex, are by an equal number of the other put into some vessel; and after that, every one draws a name, which…is called their Valentine, and is also looked upon as a good omen of their being man and wife afterwards."

Maybe a little older than that. However the specific date of when the US started celebrating such popular date remains ambiguous and obscure. Yes it became popular in the late 1800, pretty close to the 19 century. As far as 1820's is too early, I guess to assume that the pioneers were engaged in preparing valentines treats at that stage in American culture. But then again its date that has not been written on rock.

How crazy! My great grandmother was born in 1924 so she's turning 100 years old soon. For her it was closer that way of living. She used to make her own cheese, own corn bread and tortillas. Everything came from the land and she had 12 children with not running water or electricity. I really admire the power of women in those times

@meelany-thats hysterical that you described your family, and it’s your great-grandmama. That’s exactly my family, but it was my Mama, and 12 kids! Lol! We lived on a farm, we made our own butter, jams jellies, buttermilk, fresh milk. We had a giant garden, grew all the vegetables and canned them for winter, or froze some, too. We made syrups, pie fillings and berries. We had an orchard for all the fruits. We had turkeys, chickens and pigs, cows and horses. With that many people to feed, if we didn’t do it that way, we would’ve starved! With my parents, all the kids, an occasional uncle or aunt, and whatever friends my sibs had that were homeless at the time, we fed everyone! What a wonderful way to live! Mama would have been 106 this past March! I miss her so much, and I miss that farm every day.

She had little housework. Laundry and food kept her days busy. There was an article written that outlined today's household work and that of settlers. It seems 35 hrs a week was average for both modern and settlers alike. All their clothes would be hand stitched!

And to think the last two generations coming up have a lot of disrespect and self-entitlement. After the new age of being your own self and breaking boundaries. We've got a lot of people that don't even know how to share, compromise or think more of the other spouse than themselves at times. Purely selfish and self-centered nowadays. Actually not a Hallmark Holiday. Saint Valentine (Italian: San Valentino; Latin: Valentinus) was a 3rd-century Roman saint, commemorated in Western Christianity on February 14 and in Eastern Orthodoxy on July 6. From the High Middle Ages, his Saints' Day has been associated with a tradition of courtly love. He is also a patron saint of Terni, epilepsy and beekeepers.[2][3] Saint Valentine was a clergyman - either a priest or a bishop - in the Roman Empire who ministered to persecuted Christians.[4] He was martyred and his body buried at a Christian cemetery on the Via Flaminia on February 14, which has been observed as the Feast of Saint Valentine (Saint Valentine's Day) since at least the eighth century.[5] He was beheaded for marrying couples when it was against the law back then. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. ... When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death

I call it a hallmark holiday too. I refuse to celebrate it. My husband and I had both been married to cheating, lying "people " who treated us like scrap all year and used Valentine's day as a way to make up for cheating, lying, and abuse. When we met and decided we were going to be together, my one stipulation was that we never celebrate the hallmark holiday, but show each other love throughout the year. 22 years and going strong!!

It makes me sad that now at 35 I’m trying to research and learn about basic things like cooking on a fire, sewing, preserving, growing food, and all that. Survival is becoming a lost skill. I watch a lot of homesteading channels but I’ve never been more impressed or inspired than after watching your videos. I wish so greatly we could go back to living like this. Our society makes it very difficult. It feels like a trap. Anyhow, I love your content and not only the history it teaches, but the story it tells. I also love that on the other channel you have talks that are about the “real life” aspect of what you’re doing. Just really super neat and I’m a permanent fan now!!!

Being slightly under 5 ft tall I feel her pain about reaching the pot. Eventually you get tired of asking for help and you just climb everything to get what you need, including shelves at the grocery store lol. Also, watching pies being made is so nostalgic for me. I was always in the kitchen with my grandma, helping her cook. She would lay down the base crust, then give me a butter knife to cut off the extra (which either went into the top crust, or was baked later with butter, sugar, and cinnamon on top. Then she showed me how to pinch and crimp nice patterns on the edges. My favorite memories from childhood are the ones I have with her.

That historical cabin y'all built is cute. And thank you soooooo much for sharing the cooking, the 18th/19th century off grid life style, and putting so much love and effort in your videos. God bless you both. I mean that from the heart.

What a beautiful couple. My first time watching and I love it! So calming and relaxing. But making me very hungry lol. The cabin is beautiful I would love living in it. The mantle looked beautifully decorated with the red hearts and stone heart she found for him and the flowers he gave her. The heart he carved out for her was beautiful, what a treasure and keepsake. So thoughtful. I love it.

You know, I reaIIy have to admire how you've been abIe to master the art of cooking over a fire Iike that. I mean, I used to be quite good at manipuIating my way around a camping stove and even keep a marshmaIIow on the stick Iong enough for it to turn bIack, but I don't think I'd be haIf as adept as you (guys) are with this hearth cooking. Bravo.💞

What a lovely meal, even better when you shared the preparation.. very romantic kids! ( lol I’m old and loving it) I find it so interesting that even though all the meals are very straightforward ( no fancy stuff like we have today ) it’s still looks so tasty and it’s certainly much more complicated than the way we cook today. From keeping a fire going to managing the heavy cast iron without spilling ash everywhere or dropping the lid etc. very very satisfying to watch.

I don't think most people celebrated this holiday. Not in my neck of woods anyway. But I did find a handmade valentine in my mother's things from Depression Era. I know however, that it was recognized or you would not be depicting it. Thanks. I ❤️ all your videos.

Valentine's day is an oldddddd holiday. By the 18th century it was very similar to what it is today, couples giving out flowers, sweets, gifts, cards. By the 19th century it was the norm. It's actually over 1,000 years old and originated as a Christian feast day honoring one or two early Christian martyrs named Saint Valentine.

There are multiple sources citing Valentines Day celebrations and poems going back waaayy long ago. Not sure where you are from that would not celebrate a popular holiday.

Valentine's Day is an old feast day. During the Reformation many feast days were either socially prohibited or downright outlawed (IE Christmas Day in England), so possibly this is why it wasn't celebrated much where you're from if you come from a very strict protestant culture (German Lutheran, Calvinism, Baptist). The late Victorians revived many traditions with a definite secular twist (once again Christmas and Valentine's). As Justine and Ron are in French America, it is a Catholic culture where is would have been celebrated.

Just saw your thumbnail on the cabbage, sausage potato video and watched. GOLD. DON'T CHANGE THAT FORMAT! You're teaching history, Cooking, lifestyle of the times, the work that goes into the simple but honest life at that time.... it's relaxing to watch the ASMR type video. My opinion, keep it quiet and continue to show the work as it's perfect. This is unique as far as I know. Show the grunt and backbone that went into living at that time. It's like relaxing to a historical cooking show and keeps very important traditions alive and well. EXCELLENT! I only subbed to like 2 channels ever. This channel is special and important to our country and culture. May come in handy someday, who knows....

I could almost smell all the aromas while watching this super calm lady put together a feast with all the aplomb of a short order cook; everything cooked perfectly and ready at the same time. After cooking 60 years, I still haven’t mastered that. And all of it accomplished in such a small space! Amazing!

My husband and I want to have a nice cabin in the woods so we can have a place to decompress and relax early American, pioneer style. We will be celebrating our 20th anniversary in August. I have 5 years until I retire, He and I will definitely be doing this.
