I agree with changing jobs every grading period (every 9 weeks for us), and with giving the kids a time to do the maintenance type of jobs as part of our shutting down the classroom for the day. In addition, I have a student sub that not only acts as an assistant to a teacher sub when I’m gone, but also steps into any student job if the student for that job is absent for the day.

I like this idea as well. I think I’m going to do that this upcoming school year. In the past I’ve change jobs weekly that became a headache and then I switch to changing jobs every two weeks. That worked out well but I think I’m really liking this new idea☺️

I remember being in 4th grade and we had a “substitute” job where whenever there was a student missing that couldn’t do their job, the substitute would fill in! It gives that student a good variety and they can get the hang of each job and since you’re only changing jobs 3 times it might be a special one to have ❤️

I've been teaching for 30 years and my take away from your video is= "five minutes Job Time!" Fantastic validation of teamwork. Students see everyone doing routines. Students who do not have jobs at home, learn to be a team player at home! Three jobs I have done for years are: "Date Stamper" (for journals) "Student Teacher" (helps with giving directions again.) "Remote Helper." (turns screen on and off)

@@Lisa_1023 Hey Lisa, I have job assignments for an entire year. Using student numbers can help with line leader, fire drill door closer and looking for students at recess. Student Teacher job- If a student is unclear of a direction, he/she can quietly ask the Student Teacher. The shout out, "I don't understand" doesn't happen. I teach first grade so I use visuals, slow down when giving directions, model and show anchors of great work. My favorite saying is, "You can always do more than what is expected." That saying increases a higher standard and you begin to hear, "Can I do five sentences?" Attentional need is shared with a wink or thumbs up!

I have a "Birthday Bestie" in my classroom who is in charge of giving students my gift on their birthdays. I have a birthday board and all students have to do is look up at the board and make sure it is a student's birthday and then they get the gift from my birthday bin and give it to the student in case I forget. I also have a "Substitute Specialist." This friend not only does someone's job if they are absent, but they also help if there is a substitute teacher in the classroom and make sure work gets put in the absent folder for students who are absent. One more that I have is bathroom monitor. I have two boys and two girls manage this and they basically make sure that everyone is not entering the bathroom at once to make sure there is a nice flow of traffic. I'm a first year teacher, but these are three that I am trying for sure this year. Love you videos!

Love these!! I have done a substitute in the past, but have found that they will have nothing to do during "job time" at the end of the day, so the star student will fill in for anyone that is absent or if there is a sub!

You could have each student write their top 3 choices for jobs and then assign the students to the jobs. Then next time you switch, keep track of who got their 1st job choice last time, and give those students who didn’t get 1st choice a chance to get their top choice the next time!

I would introduce the jobs and explain what it entails. Then I would have them each get a chance to try out the job. Then I would ask each student what job they liked and would want to have and I would write down their top three. Then I would assign them their jobs and on the job board I posted their photo. They had that job for the entire school year! If they wanted to switch jobs with someone I let them do it once and only if the other person really agreed. If they were slacking at their job I would make them a substitute. This works really well because they don’t forget their job and they know when it needs to be done 😃 I also had a job with my photo to show them we all work together to keep our classroom running smoothly!

My issue with having students request the job they wanted was having multiple requests for the same job. To resolve this, I had the whole class on a rotation schedule. This had some pros and cons. I'm not sure yet what I'm going to do this year, but I'm loving all the ideas! For instance, I don't know why it had never occured to me to give jobs for more than one week! 🤦🏻♀️ Definitely going to change that this year! It'll be much easier for me! I love your videos! In my class we have a “gardener”. I show all of student how to check the the soil so when it’s they’re turn they all know know if they should be watered that day or not. My CT would change jobs everyday but I felt that was a little to much for me so I did them for the whole week. But my 1st graders wanted to change jobs more frequently. So we voted and I started to change them out every 2ish days… so Mon.-Wed. And Thurs.-Fri. Not sure how I’ll do it this year yet.

I am one of those teachers who can’t keep up with changing jobs weekly. I had a team/group captain that kept group supplies in order & replenished. But now with COVID, I don’t know if it’s a good idea to have community supplies or have one child touching & replenishing other kids’ supplies. My management system pre-COVID worked so well for me for now I’m not sure how to do this. Last school year I was full remote and this wasn’t an issue for me but now we’re back full time in the classroom.

I personally do not enjoy classroom jobs. With up to 28 students and some jobs are just less appealing and they don’t want to do them or not much is involved and they feel it is useless. For example, the book box organizer doesn’t have anything to do because our book boxes are 99% done anyway. We have some jobs that would be best for 1 student but then other jobs need more than one student. I just haven’t found a system that ACTUALLY works. BTW- I teach third grade and work a job share with another teacher.
