Loved this! Another fun approach is to hunt for v-points with a time limit but limit yourself to *new* climbs (nothing you've done before). Really makes you solve sequences quickly and dial in a variety of techniques. The setters at the 5 or so gyms near me (in Berkeley and Oakland) are CONSTANTLY setting new great stuff, so I end up doing this 1-2x a week. Sadly nobody has ever paid me $1 per v-point... Maybe one day :)

You say this gym is rough, but in my gym that black V5 is a V4 max, and most of the v4 are not even V3. My gym is way harder than this, I can tell.

welcome to commercial climbing gyms. unless the setting team makes it a point to grade realistically, they're soft, particularly at the low end.

If we acknowledge that grading is subjective, and the difficulty between gyms is a spectrum, it's probably fair to say there are likely many gyms above and below this gym's difficulty. Aside from all the other factors, like bias, style, external viewer effect...I guess what I'm trying to say is, why does it matter?

Everyone gets so sucked into grades. “Oh my gyms harder than yours” unless you are competing professionally it’s not a battle you shouldn’t be trying to boast and put other people down. Just be cool man anyway there’s always a bigger fish u definitely aren’t as strong as you think, considering you are commenting about the grading of climbs that’s are v4. there’s no way you even climb above v8.
