So this week I got a couple of cool apps on the iPad: one allows me to record myself, the other to play it back at 1/4 tempo...which lets me hear just how uneven my technique is! And when I can hear it, I can fix it.

Just a reminder that finger problems are frequently air problems. First thing to look at when fingers are malfunctioning is whether you are letting down your air support at any point. Of course slow practicing helps to focus on this.

Hey Michael, (good name by the way) are there any potential problems that can arise from always keeping your clarinet out in your experience? I have a Yamaha custom wooden clarinet and I always get worried if I leave it out about cracks and so forth but I get way more practice done if it's always available to play at any moment. Thanks in advance

It's usually a good idea to put it away. I leave mine out if I'm going to practice later in the day, but usually not overnight

I would suggest that you ALWAYS put your reed away (in a reed case with humidifier; alt, a piece of glass with a rubber band in a baggy, also with humidifier). During the winter, leaving your instrument out in dry air would have an impact on your pads more than the wood. The late Harold Wright always used a small piece of orange peel in his case; nowadays you can buy instrument humidifiers. And of course use a humidifier in the room if possible.

Excellent video! I'm just curious as to why you use your middle finger for the F# instead of first finger and the chromatic Bb/F# key with the third finger? That's always been easier in my opinion.

Sara Johnson focus on where your hands are, it’s a lot larger than a Bb clarinet, make sure you have the right reed for your mouthpiece (if it sounds airy it’s probably too strong, really squeaky is probably too weak, if you find yourself in between two strengths go for the stronger of the two because it will get a bit easier to play once it breaks in), for your embouchure try to focus on not biting down since more often than not you’re going to squeak doing that, and practice you’re scales, and make sure you practice over the break
