The Earth Defense Force series is literally the embodiment of the question: "...but at what cost?". And interestingly, Earth Defense Force 6 is supposed to be a direct sequel to 5, with us fighting in the ruins of Earth against the next wave of aliens. So we might actually get an answer to that question.
