Rockwell B-1B Lancer 85-0089 from Dyess AFB, Texas, thunders out of RAF Fairford on September 4th 2016 under the call sign CROOK01.
This aircraft is from the 489th BG, part of the 7th Bomb Wing and was taking part in a familiarisation flight in preparation for operation Ample Strike '16 in the Czech Republic.
The B-1 truly is a sensory overload at such close quarters!

I grew up right outside Dyess AFB in Texas. I loved watching these take off at night, with all 4 engines glowing. There was one airshow they did there one year where a Lancer did a flyover at over Mach 1 at very low altitude. It knocked pictures off our walls. So worth it. I was in the front yard when it went right over us, completely silent for a second.

Awesome, a Bone from Dyess AFB. I worked on them for 9 years. I started as a Mid-shift Production Supervisor and when I retired I was the Avionics Flight Chief. I can't say it was the best base I ever worked at. The avionics shop was open for business 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 363 days a year. We were only closed for Thanksgiving and Christmas. The workload was intense to say the least. Undermanned, and overworked. We were authorized 137 airmen, but usually had 67-73. The coolest thing I got to do as a Flight Chief was to read a letter from an Army 1st Sgt. It described how their patrol was pinned down from sniper fire and they called in air support. The closest aircraft with ordnance was 15 minutes out. Our B-1 was getting fuel from a tanker after dropping all his bombs elsewhere, It arrived within five minutes and flew over the enemy held ridge line in full afterburner at 200 feet. It didn't drop a single bomb, but the taliban fled for their lives. It must have been quite a sight. The B-1 is faster than an F-15 at sea level. Quite a beast.

This one has the original external engines. The newer stealth upgrade has recessed engines to reduce radar feedback. I haven't kept up with this system, so I don't know if/when the recessed engines were/will be upgraded. I entered the Air Force Academy in 1974 and these bombers were listed with photos in the Contrails training manual as pending along with F-15's, F-16's, and A-10's. That's how freakin' long ago it was when these were being designed and tested.

Patrick Oconnor I would have loved that. The "closest" I came to the SR-71 was at it's final air show performance in 1999 at Edwards AFB. When it flew by with it's tiger-tail afterburners blazing, I could feel the power from half way across the field. They also had it fly over at 70.000 ft. at mach 3. It produced a double sonic boom and the announcer said that the SR-71 was 2 miles away. I will never forget that moment.

I got buzzed at low altitude by one of these while sipping margaritas on a boat on Lake Powell in the '80s.....holy shit, it was doing near Mach 1 so we didn't hear it coming but one of the guys who happened to be a pilot saw it coming down a canyon onto the lake and screamed "B1!" and everyone was like "wtf is he all screaming about?" And we all turned around and it was so low over our boat that I could have tossed the pilot a margarita if he was going a bit slower. His loss. Then our ears never forgave him...earth shattering point blank RAWR! Glad he wasn't doing Mach 1

We were in Kandahar Province on the enemy supply trail at 6500 ft and got ambushed so we dug in behind the boulders and requested air support. We were advised the A10's could not be on site for 30 minutes at best and my response was we would not last that long but we would hold in place. The next thing I heard was a strange voice telling us to dig in place and that THEIR mission had been canceled, but could deliver lots of gifts to buy us some time and it was COVER ears time! When that B1 arrived it was only five minutes after the call. Most of us were visible elevated off the sandy ground when that bomb run exploded right in front of our now covered faces and ears! IMPRESED DOES NOT EVEN BEGINE TO DISCRIBE THE AMAZING DISPLAY BY A SINGLE BI. I HAD TO SET UP STEAK DINNERS AT A BAR HANG OUT BACK NEAR THE BASE IN SOUTH DAKOTA FOR AFTER THEIR 30 HOUR RETURN WITH A NOW EMPTY BOMB RUN LOAD AS A HEARTFUL THANKS!

The F110 GE engines are among the best as to why both the F-14 and F-16 we're redone with them however all B1-Bs still have the old but reliable GE F101 engines. The B-1 Lancer did test them several yrs ago but as to why not using them is just a mystery. The thrust to weight ratio must still be capable for such a massive plane and from the look of things still a beauty when afterburner selected.

@@leonmiller4774 You might have a point there. I've spent the better part of an hour on three visits at Udvar-Hazy getting as close to the SR-71 as they will allow and bought the polo shirt of one too. Upclose it looks like a child's paper mache project made of black, badly glued paper but those lines are....legendary. "That's better than anything in Star Wars" said one guy standing near me. His young son agreed.

Did my high school research debate paper on the B-1 way back in 1980 before Reagan brought it back. The B-1 was supposed to replace the B-52 and now 38 years later both are still flying. Wish there were more of them.

Superb video, the camera angle and the topography did make it look as though it was going "off piste" at one point, just brilliant. Last time I had my "innards" rattled by an aircraft was at Fairford at a Tattoo 20 odd years ago by Concorde, now that hurt we were right at the end of the runway about 50 or some metres away, this video brought it all back thank you!

This is my all time favorite plane. My dad worked for Rockwell International in Tulsa, Ok. and in 1976 we took a vacation to California. He worked it out so we could go to the plant and see the full sized mock up. We climbed all over it and got the guided tour. Definitely the highlight of the trip for me. Then I come home from school in 1977 and Carter had cancelled the program. My dad is still bent to this day...mention Carter and his blood boils!

I grew up as an Air Force brat. My fondest memories were of the B-58 Hustler with her beautiful big Delta wing holding 4 G.E. J-79 turbojet engines taking off or landing at Carswell AFB as a young air force dependent. Especially at night when those a.b.s kicked in. I was in SAC 72-76 but we had the Buffs B-52 G models and the F111 swing wings at U-Tapao. 308th Bomb Wing and Mather A.F.B. 320th Bomb Wing both SAC bases. We had the B1 come in from Ellsworth at Mather, The B1 cost 3 times as much to run versus the good old work horse the venerable B-52. So the B- 21 Raider will replace her by 2026. Time marches on. But the from the sleek B-58 to the B1-B to the B-21, they are all beautiful high speed birds of prey whether nuclear or conventional.

That is an amazing aircraft and it was designed during the Cold War for penetration into Soviet airspace in case of a nuclear war. It was designed to penetrate at low levels and destroy their targets and exit quickly before going back to high level flight where it was safe. The B-2 Spirit is another airplane designed to do the same thing, but at higher altitudes and return to their home base afterwards.
