To clarify, 2024PT5 (the asteroid) is nowhere near apocalyptic. Because it’s only 11 meters at its biggest the earths atmosphere will burn it up, and if it doesn’t it would only cause a minor shockwave. (For example the 2013 asteroid that exploded over Russian was 18 meters). Also the asteroid is nowhere near Earth anyways and astronomers have made many different observations to determine its orbit, even tracking its path back to 30 years ago. Asteroids like this are tracked reliably all the time. There’s no danger of any impact. By the way, for the comments saying it’s “suspicious” that we won’t be able to see the asteroid when it’s close, that’s just because it’s extremely small, there’s nothing crazy about that. Don’t let this one news report trick you into thinking this asteroid is a threat, it’s nothing more than a cool event.

people misunderstand how far away the moon is from us. If the earth is a basketball, the moon would be a tennis ball that orbits 21 feet away. This asteroid would be a grain of sand. Also, while the math seems pretty daunting, it really isn't. I'm sure scientists know exactly where the asteroid will be every minute of the two months it is near us.
@elementneon2 ай бұрын
Agree but the difference is way more exaggerated than even that. If a golf ball is 43mm in diameter, and an average grain of sand is 0.5mm, it would only take 86 grains of sand to equal the diameter of a golf ball. However the moon is 3,475,000 meters in diameter, which would mean the asteroid would need to be 40,406 meters in diameter to roughly equate to a grain of sand... but it's only 11 meters. So in your comparison this asteroid would be 1/3673 the size of a grain of sand compared to moon the size of a golf ball, that far away from the basketball sized Earth. Entirely insignificant, and why we would never even see it.

Likely Saturn (or Titan). Saturn appears near the moon this month. When full, the moon makes it hard to see, especially in poor light polluted skies. Lunar eclipse drops the reflected light by the percentage of the eclipse...and suddenly stars and planets appear as they would on new moon or crescent moon nights. BTW Saturn is close to edge on viewing of the rings. Looks different this year...like Jupiter but with a simple line drawn over it. Next summer the rings will disappear because they'll be completely edge on to us.

I did the math to put this into perspective with easy to visualize sizes (borrowing from what another commenter started). If EARTH was a basketball sitting on a tennis court, then think of the moon as a tennis ball sitting 23 feet away. Then this asteroid would be 1/2500th the size of an average grain of sand next to that tennis ball. So 2500 of these asteroids line up next to each other would equate to the same diameter as 1 grain of sand next to a tennis ball sized Moon or basketball sized Earth. That is why we will not be able to see it. It is not the "mountain" sized apocalyptic threat this news piece would seem to be inferring 🤓

How the heck can you call it a second moon if it’s not going to be large enough in the sky to SEE it with the naked eye? There are large stars and planets in the sky we can see without a telescope that aren’t hyped up. I guess what the point is, is there is an incoming asteroid that will pass the moon where if you look up at the moon for the next 2 months, you may see the asteroid as well but even with a telescope it will be very very tiny. I gotta say, the headline or tittle is extremely misleading. 🌖 😒

A moon is a natural object that orbits a planet. That's exactly what this is and what it will be doing. Size and length of time it obits don't disqualify it from being called a moon.

Just because you can't see it or won't use a telescope to look for it doesn't mean it's pointless.
