I have the Harbor Freight XT Earthquake. I use it every day in a professional shop. The most important thing you need from an impact wrench is the reverse torque. That's because you will need to break loose and remove nuts and bolts that have been tightened down sometimes for years. The fact that they are rusted to hell and may have lock tight on them makes it even worse. So far the 1/2" Earthquake XT has busted loose everything I've ever used it on. The strange thing is, it doesn't even hammer on it for a few seconds before bringing it loose. As soon as I hit the trigger it's done. It easily out dose my old Ingersol Rand impact. When you grow up in a shop and you've always used the tools your dad got you started with it's easy to become a fanboy and to get stuck with that one track mind that certain tool companies are the best. I know, because I grew up using Snap-On and thought they were made by God himself. But over the years I've learned to ignore the name on the tool and just buy what works. I started working in my dad's shop when I was 15. I'm 50 now and still wrenching.

I'm very impressed that your mind was open to get outside of Snap On. I just got my Harbor Freight XT Earthquake. Do you think I'll need the 2 year warranty? You've had it 9 months. How's it holding up?
@wcjcnc6 жыл бұрын
It still works great. You need to upgrade all your air hose fittings to high flow and you need a large air compressor. It makes a huge difference. You don’t really need to go up to 1/2” air hose. Just make sure all the couplers and fitting all the way to the compressor are high flow. Like any air tool, be sure to put some air tool oil in it every so often. This wrench is one of the best deals at Harbor Freight.

It's failed me a few times. I had to buy the 3/4'' model to make up for it when the 1/2'' couldn't do it. Even had a few lug nuts that it wouldn't remove. It's not my air supply, either. I have a 42 gallon setup and I run the 1/2'' at 120psi. I can max out at 200psi and I have a 1/2'' air hose, like 20 foot so not long enough to cause significant drop in the hose pressure.

I have one of each of these wrenches, I breakdown and load construction equipment into sea containers. I use a 3/8" line with 1/4" fitting on the 1/2" and remove lug nuts requiring a 1 1/2" socket. I bought the 3/4" gun in case the 1/2" gun won't do the trick. I have yet to use the 3/4" gun because I haven't found a lug nut the 1/2" gun won't remove. I am completely satisfied with them and if they go belly up prematurely I can buy another. I can do that 4 times before I invest as much as a Snap On would cost

Hope all is well with you man. Are you planning on making videos again in the future? I think you have a lot to offer over other channels. The dynamic torque testing is incredible, and it really shows the full picture when comparing impacts. On the torque test channel, the dcf900 outperformed the hercules ultratorque i think. But then on the Shop Tool Review channel, the hercules ultratorque outperformed the dcf900 in actual loosening tests! I am guessing the hercules had higher dynamic torque. If a channel was to do the max reverse, forward working, and dynamic torque testing, they would be the go-to impact channel. Many like your presentation style as well. If you didn't have enough time and energy to do youtube anymore i get that, time with family and friends is important, and we only have so much time.

I ran across this video today. I was changing a strut assembly and my POS Central Pneumatic wrench would not budge the nut from the sway bar link, not to mention the nuts for the steering knuckle. I've seen the Earthquake XT around and wanted some independent info on it, so this video was a great resource. I bought the 1/2" version today and it zipped the nuts off like nobody's business. Thanks for the video and I'm now a subscriber.

Daniel, there is another option with respect to air delivery. The European air fittings (which here in America Milton calls the Milton Style V) flow much more air than the Milton M or industrial fittings. You can see the airflow charts on Milton's website. Frankly I prefer Prevost couplers to Milton's but the Milton Stubs are much cheaper so that's what I use. This problem first came into view with HVLP spray guns (specifically the SATA Nr2000) which consume large quantities of air. We painters have been using high flow fittings for years so we are slightly ahead of the mechanical types on this point.
@JonDisnard8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Milton V style are the best in 1/4 air fittings. Higher flow and semi compatible with industrial fittings. Switched my whole air setup to Milton V's. Still better to use larger hose and fittings, because flow always trumps pressure.

Love to see how these compare to the IR 2235 1/2" and 3/4" models
@cliffclark64413 жыл бұрын
I got a couple of these earth quake laying around . For a few days it will compete with the 2235 but it will not last long you will be like me and throw it on the bench and never use it. The 2235 about after one year put a cheap kit in it and be ready for it to last for another year, Parts are much cheaper than buying new impacts. The earth quake are throw away and replace. Just put a kit in my 3/4 2245 wrench tonight. These IR model wrenches are what these earth quake wrenches are a copy of. And never run these copy wrenches on 175 air pressure like you can the IR wrench. They will wear out in just a few days. And yes when i come across a bolt that 120 psi will not break lose i will plug the IR wrench into 175 pressure. But any 3/4 wrench will use over 30cfm at 90. And very few auto shops have that kind of air flow. When i need the 3/4 i fire up the diesel compressor and it puts out 160 cfm air flow at 150 psi. Importing thing about impacts are price of replacement parts.

I have the red composite version of that 1/2 I've had it about 8-9 years now and it still does a great jobby, at one point it was left early in its life out in the snow and was seized up but I dumped some marvel MO down into it and broke it free and it's been working just fine for years now. I did get that 3/4" you had it sure was stout but I returned it after a project was done because it hurts my shoulders to lay on my back and use the thing with my arms up, so I barely have use for it given my 1/2" is my main slice when breaking stuff free. I have no complaints about that 3/4", it has to weigh something else it wouldn't work, HF does a great job on their pneumatic stuff, I'm loyal to them on mine. I like most HFs offerings, I've got a video about the review of my impact, I was removing some big bolts off a school bus fuel tank and that 1/2" blasted them off with ease, no pb blaster or tools just the old abused impact that still does a tougher job than they claimed on paper. I've managed to use my 1/2" to take 32mm lugs off a full sized school bus, but that was just one, the other 2 I've tried it on it wouldn't. This was a awesome video, thanks for leaving out the drama most other channels try and waste my time with, I appreciate it, your video was worth watching every min.

My mechanic friends told me that they shy away from these guns for 2-reasons, 1: Mechanic's in shops are tool snobs. They make fun of anyone who doesn't have Snap-on stuff, (I told them who cares, if you can get a gun for 25% what a Snap-on will cost, and it will do the job, do it!) 2. It only comes with a 90-day warranty. I told them they could buy the extended warranty and still be way under the price of Snap-on anything.

I have the Titanium IR 2135 1/2" impact, and I've thought it was just the tits. Thing is just great. But i picked up one of these at HF awhile back, just as a spare because it was on sale. And I'm very surprised by it. Not only is it a very capable impact, but i expected it to be built cheap. It's not. Tear it down and look if you like. But it's very well machined and very well designed. I really thought I'd find where they cut costs on it, but i couldn't. Side by side it's almost identical to my IR. I'm a machinist by day, and honestly i can't see anything in it that is sub par to snap on or IR. If you need a nice first impact, this thing is worth every penny. HF is pretty hit and miss, but this is a total hit.

I'm anxious to get my hands on the 1/2 drive version. I have both the snap on mg725 and the mg325 already and both the regular earthquake 1/2 and 3/8 drive impacts. I can tell you for a fact that 725 is stronger than the regular 1/2 earthquake, but isn't as strong as my nitrocat 1200k. Also that the mg325 is pretty equal in loosening torque compared to the 3/8 earthquake gun but the earthquake is much stronger in forward than the 325 (if that's worth anything to you). However since we're on the subject of air tools, the 3/8 drive earthquake ratchet is phenomenal and has held up well to about a year of abuse so far. Just my observations from some hands on use.

I have the regular Earthquake 1/2" gun as well (love the thing) and was disturbingly excited when I saw this review pop up in my sub'd channel list. I love the rigor and attention to detail in all of your videos. I don't know if you take requests, but I have a small air compressor at home (The Husky Silent Flow 4.6 gal you actually reviewed once + a 7 gallon Kobalt expansion tank) and I was wondering if you could do a video testing the actual effects of different fitting and hose diameters and show the actual working torque numbers of an impact gun like the 1/2 XT here. Perhaps something like: * Your badass 80gal compressor with 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 diameter hose and 1/4 + 3/8 fittings on each if possible * Modest compressor setup like mine with 1/4, 3/8, and if even possible 1/2 diameter hose and 1/4 + 3/8 fittings I realize that's a crapload of testing and time-commitment right there, but I would be super interested in general to see real numbers linked to different hose/fitting diameters when the impact gun and hose length are held constant.

Would you please do a comparison between these and their predecessors that's sold along with these? From the ratings, the differences seem to be slight increase in torque and composite housing. If the torque ratings do not differ much, the predecessors would be better value.

I used the 21gallon compressor to run a 1" impact gun for semi lug nuts. So yeah it'll do it but you need to be patient. The maximum power burst is short. Especially with 1/2" hose and 3/8" high flow fittings. The bigger the tank, the longer you can sit on a fastener and let the gun hammer at it before it needs to refill.

@Npc51503 жыл бұрын
I have both models. I was curious to know if the HF 1'' impacts were worth getting compared to the EQXT 3/4''. Do you have one you can review? I'm not terribly impressed with the 3/4'' torque numbers but all the manufacturers stretch the truth with their advertised values. Makes it difficult to compare impacts, almost like car audio amplifiers and their BS max wattage ratings.

@@RealToolReviews Yeah, I've got 42 gallons capacity, 1/2'' ID short hoses, high flow connectors. Most impacts seem to let me down. I need a 1'' for sure. The HF 1'' models are cheap, it worries me.
@RealToolReviews3 жыл бұрын
What is your static pressure? You’ll probably need 110-120 static to achieve 90 working when in use at the tool.
@Npc51503 жыл бұрын
@@RealToolReviews I don't understand static pressure. I normally run at 150 psi on the adjuster. I have daisy chained tanks with high flow couplers, short 1/2'' hoses... I think it's only a few feet between tanks. Tanks go up to 200PSI but I'm worried to go above 150. Manuals say not to exceed 90psi. Using a water trap, no fogger... I squirt oil into the connector before use, every time. Using Marvel brand tool oil.

I wouldn’t waste your money on the Harbor Freight 1” guns. I tried out the pistol grip and extended anvil ones and their torque output is nowhere near what is claimed. My 3/4” Aircat could remove fasteners the 1” Harbor Freight couldn’t budge. If you need an extended anvil, I would suggest the Aircat 1994 and if you want a pistol grip I would suggest the Capri Tools 1”. The Capri is expensive, but it’s mean and always gets the job done.

So they lied about its torque? I wonder in the long run if these cheaper impacts hold up as well as an expensive one?
@RealToolReviews8 жыл бұрын
There are ZERO standards for torque testing between manufacturers.....the only standardized test is the one that I do......that way you can easily see who is really more powerful (vs relying on marketing claims). As far as reliability, I cannot say, since these are a new release. I did take the impact apart & noticed no wear from my testing though.

I'm kinda kinda new to this so im stuck on what size hose and fitting I should get with the 1/2 XT. Should I go with 3/8" or 1/2“ hose with 3/8" fitting. I curently have a Husky 30gal 175psi compressor.
@RealToolReviews7 жыл бұрын
Upgrade your fittings from the regulator to the tool to either 1/4" high-flow or 3/8" fittings (either with 1/4" NPT threads). I use 3/8" fittings + 50' of 1/2" hose & measure the working pressure AT the tool in order to set the regulator correctly (90 psi working). Check out this video that I made to understand better --- kzbin.info/www/bejne/g3nbY3iLjL6tq68

Hi Real Tool does the 3/4 in. Composite Xtreme Torque Air Impact Wrench lose torque if I use a 3/4 to 1/2 adapter to a 1/2 deep socket? How much torque would I lose. It has 1700ft-lbs of nut busting torque but how much of that do I lose if I do what I just suggested? Thanks in advance

@@RealToolReviews thank you. I watch the video. I understand about torque loss. But now I'm thinking do you get "torque gain" if you go from 3/4 drive to a 1/2 in socket? Mainly I'm trying to figure out should I get the 1500ftlbs ingersoll rand cordless 1/2" or the earthquake 3/4" cordless 1700ftlbs? I'm a mechanic and will only be using the tools for cars.

I've found that big and heavy sockets versus little ones actually do a more powerful job on getting the job done. I think that's why the Honda Crankshaft bolt removal tool is super fat. I laughed when my friend said it was necessary but removed it by hand. I told him, that fat socket only helps with an impact tool. I hope that helps too. @@nicenow25

Honda crank pulley bolts can be a real nightmare to remove. have seen them laugh at a standard duty 1/2 inch drive impact, they can sometimes take close to 1000 ftlbs of torque to remove. 2nd gen dodge ram 4x4 front hub nut ( takes a 1 and 11/16 inch socket ) my 700 ftlb gun would not budge it. had to use a 3/4 impact. depending on the type of work you do sometimes you run into some really stubborn fasteners.

I've been using a IR 2135TI for years. I have known for many years that IR is the best. I have a tool box full of Snap-On tools but IR impacts are the best. I can't wear them out and I am a professional at a Ford Dealer for 21 yrs now. I still want to try this cheap Horrible Freight Job at home for the fun of it. I'm still using my 20 yr old IR at home that still works just fine.
