With EarthQuaker’s new Data Corrupter you can wave goodbye to twang, chime and chug and say hi to Oscillators, pitch-shifting and portamento for a world of incredible synth sounds.
In techy terms, the Data Corrupter is a three-voice modulated monophonic harmonizing Phase-locked loop, also known as a PLL. In Stefan terminology, it’s a super badass analog synth pedal with three independent voices, a sea of harmonic pitch possibilities, wild vibrato and gliding portamento modulation, and a crushing square-wave fuzz.

You never cease to amaze me, Stefan. 99% of the times I check a new weird pedal release in a few youtube demos, I go "meh, it makes cool weird noises, but it just wouldn't work for me; I don't even know how to make something pleasant, melodic, or quite simply that isn't pure noise with it". And then, you go and demo it, proving it's entirely possible (without a single blues lick), every damn time. Keep doing whatever it is that you do, proving Joe Bonamassa wrong one video at a time :) Oh, also, where do I get a hold of that t-shirt? I need one in my life.

I gotta agree with the others. I checked out a bunch of demos for this pedal, and they were mostly useless. No real explanation of how to actually use this thing. Just what I would expect guys screwing around with it at a local guitar shop to do. No musicality whatsoever. This thing definitely has a bold sound, but I don't believe that it walks over other pedals. It really likes tremolo pedals, phasers and delay/reverb as shown in this video. Really helps enhance its already amazing synthetic qualities

I’ve been trying to figure out what’s in my mind for guitar/one man band metal. I discovered the Arturia Minifreak in another vid of yours, which might be a big answer to some of what’s floating in my mind. I was looking at the Microsynth from EHX, but just as guitar pedal to make cool unique synth sounds, I want to do stuff similar to cell dweller, and perhaps a bit more electronic meets heavy metal style, do you have any recommendations for such? It’s so easy to get lost in the numerous amounts of gear. I have a great amp, guitar and a few guitar pedals, but would love your opinion on ways to get there and pedal options?

Honored to hear that. My signal was simply guitar straight into Data Corrupter. Nothing in between. Data Corrupter just likes a strong input, so make sure to use the neck pickup on your guitars. Data Corrupter has worked equally well with any guitar I've thrown at it.

Correct - I mean the band, ZOMBI. Check 'em out - they're a great rock band than combines live drums with synths and sequencers, and this pedal would be a great way to reproduce their sound.

It’s not a loop station. I’m using a dedicated Looper to create the loop jam at the end, if that’s the segment that got you confused 😊

You have any success making songs with this pedal?

@@vexedism i was playing in a metal band, so this pedal had little space in there. But I found a good fuzzy synth sound using the subharmonic, setting it to track the oscilator on glide mode, rating on max. That config allowed me to making the 5ths (or any interval on the sub knob) of the root note, so I could use it to play "normal riffs". The square signal by himself is a pretty great fuzz, and I use an overdrive before to shape the tone. When the pandemic ceases I will try for sure to use it with this settings for more "conventional" situations, just need to form a new band, haha.

When I hear this pedals sounds never in my life have I heard any pedal that could so use a foot controled expression pedal port, sweeping just about any of the controls is spectacular, while a steady tone just begs for a sweep. In my opinion this pedal should be rengineered to have assignable foot control of any parameter, then it will be the best pedal of this kind in existence.

I’m also curious if you have tried the Beetronix Swarm pedal, which does a few similar things as the Data Corrupter, and if so how you think they compare?

Hey Stefan you did the data corrupter justice. When I was younger I always wanted the original Roland Guitar Synth, Robert Fripp and Adrean Belew used them, the sounded awesome. This pedal DOES NOT play well with others, it plays best alone.

Depends on what you mean with that. It's a pedal that performs best at the very start of your signal chain, since the oscillators are dependant on a strong and clean input signal to track properly. So yeah, if you place stuff before it that can cloud the signal information from your guitar, then it will not perform as intended. A compressor before the Data Corrupter can help with input consistency though and give even more reliant tracking. But feeding this sucker into some modulation and reverb/delay is a divine experience :)
