@aaaaaa22063 жыл бұрын
@@justinmyers5215 Anyone who came to America after 1492 had ancestors in Europe, who were most probably peasants, who most probably built their own houses made out of cob and other natural materials in the middle ages which were cheap, easy to construct and were well insulated and efficient. In the past, all people around the world were able to do this. The "indians" were nomadic people who lived in tents/tipis but a jurta/yurt is more insulated and more comfortable. My point is that the "indians" may not have been superior experts in buuilding with natural materials but their structures got the job done.

These free heating, cooling, water and food sources have always been around. But modern society has convinced us that we need to pay money for all of those things, so industrialists have worked hard to obscure this free stuff from the masses.
@Itried20takennames10 ай бұрын
I don’t think it is quite that bad, but that the stick-built homes on the grid are just easier to build and are well known, so easier to permit. Plus suburban box homes can be packed closer together than Earthships, which need a leeching field for the septic system, need to face a very specific direction, etc. so stickbuilt is easier and more profitable for builders. A permiter may refuse or delay an Earthship permit not because they think “no…I must make everyone pay corporate America!” but because they have never seen a request to bury a bunch of used tires, or the atypical, multi-use water system, etc. and so are not sure how to evaluate whether it’s safe and practical. Or a bank may decline not because they want to “keep the rabble dependent” but because they are uncertain of whether a unique home will have the same resale potential as a standard home design…..which is true. It is easier to resale a typical box home than an Earthship, or a cement dome home, or a home made of an old air plane fuselage.

Very awesome! I am just learning about this for the first time. I love the greenhouse, but I was thinking some of those trees like the avocado and fig will need A LOT more room to grow. Is it possible to build an Earthship that is 2 stories? Also, wouldn't it be better to put those trees outside -- you are already directing the black water outside to nourish plants. I saw another video that didn't use the Earth mound off the back of the house -- instead, it put two layers of tires to provide the insolation for the cooling vents. I am only mentioning this because it may not be possible to have the Earth mounds in some areas. Thanks so much!
@frankpeng622 жыл бұрын
I think the growing space for the plant is not big enough for a 3-person family. To make it useful, you have to design it to host 20 people in case you have visitors. The sewer and wet waste processing capacity needs 20 times in the video. I think a dedicated room for plant to grow and another room for solid waste and wet waste processing room is needed. For sewer water system, you need 3 or 4 huge septic tanks under ground to basically finish the sewer water treatment. Altogether the biological processing capability will be 30 times as the video.

Seriously the coolest thing, but how do these work in eastern Canada. I realize the heating in the winter would be the big issue, but whether I would build an earth or a house I’d have a wood stove!! Even opt for a heat pump if needed. But would the material hold up in our extreme climate? Hot summers and cold winters?
@travelfeet3 жыл бұрын
There are a few northern climate builds I have seen. Some design changes are needed, but nothing drastic. Suplimental heating seems like a good idea regardless for long dark winters.
@Itried20takennames10 ай бұрын
My amateur guess is that it works in cold, less sunny weather with some modifications, as I have seen videos on similar designs in some traditional homes in Siberia (mostly buried, with a wall of South facing windows). The tricky part is often the permits and loans. Earthships are often built in the US 4- corners, empty, desert states, since these allow permits for “experimental” housing. Other locations are not used to Earthships and don’t know how to address a request to bury a bunch of tires, or the repeated use of the water supply, etc. And loan companies worry about the resale value of very unique homes.
@89TobinRoss4 жыл бұрын
Would this be viable in Texas? Love everything this man does Also who downvoted this shit?!?
@Itried20takennames10 ай бұрын
Someone would downvote a video on how to easily reverse aging, achieve world peace and make unlimited free clean energy. It would likely work great in Texas, but these are mostly in the 4-corners states as this area allow permits for “experimental” housing. In many other areas, permitting departments don’t know how to respond to a request to bury many used tires, or that has an atypical, multi-use water system, and it can be difficult to get the permits.

I have one big question. Is there a limit to the size of your greenhouse as compared to the home size or could you double the size of your greenhouse??
@theuglykwan4 жыл бұрын
There are ones where the greenhouse is bigger. Their Phoenix model. A celebrity had a multilevel one filled with more planters but he seemed to just grow flowers. There's a homesteading family in Canada that repaired an old earthship and doubled the greenhouse area - they seem to live mostly on what they grow. I think the reason the greenhouse section is so anemic because most people aren't all in with growing and already find this overwhelming. His original plan was to have a bigger garden area, I think he just adjusted it to match what people wanted. You can customize yours.
