**Title:** Biohacking for Longevity: A Deep Dive with Farbod Khoshtinat --- **Introduction** *Ranveer Allahbadia (RA)* welcomes his guest, **Farbod "Fab" Khoshtinat (FK)**, a biohacker known for his groundbreaking personal experiments in genetic engineering and longevity. Ranveer expresses his intrigue about Fab's journey and why more people haven't discovered his work yet. --- **Segment 1: Meeting Fab** - **RA** shares his first impression of Fab at the Network State Conference, describing him as someone "emitting light." - **RA** mentions discussions with others about Fab being a "real-life Captain America" due to his biohacking endeavors. - **RA** sets the stage for Fab to share his story, noting the uniqueness and depth of his experiences. --- **Segment 2: Fab's Health Journey** - **FK** begins by recounting his health struggles in college: - Suffered from severe digestive issues. - Woke up every morning needing to rush to the bathroom. - Couldn't sleep lying down; had to sleep sitting up. - Doctors were unable to diagnose or treat his condition effectively. - **FK** turned to the early internet (early 2000s) to research his symptoms. - Discovered and adopted a **macrobiotic diet**: - Moved to Austin, Texas, to study it in depth. - Diet focused on fermented foods, miso, and vegetables. - Spent seven years preparing his own food daily. - **Outcome**: His health improved dramatically; he could eat anything without adverse effects. --- **Segment 3: The Car Accident** - **FK** describes a life-changing event in San Francisco: - At age 32, he was hit by a car. - Suffered severe injuries: lost half a kidney, 6 inches of intestines, and had a 12-inch incision on his abdomen. - Spent most of 2009 in the hospital, unable to walk or stand up straight. - **Recovery Process**: - Researched peptides and hormone therapy. - Engaged in advanced physical training. - Went from being unable to walk to performing feats like climbing rope ladders using only his hands. --- **Segment 4: Overcoming Deafness** - **FK** shares his battle with genetic hearing loss in his early 40s: - Became deaf and had to use two hearing aids. - Doctors told him it was irreversible. - **Solution**: - Researched and diagnosed the problem himself. - Found a top surgeon to perform ear surgery. - Had the bones in his ears replaced with titanium prosthetics. - **Outcome**: - Woke up from surgery able to hear whispers. - Emotional moment captured on video, showing him crying tears of joy. - Emphasizes the importance of self-advocacy in healthcare. --- **Segment 5: The Genetic Modification Experiment** - **FK** discusses his recent venture into genetic modification: - Visited **Honduras** at a place called **VitaLife**, likened to a "network state" for experimental medicine. - Was experiencing weight gain for the first time due to metabolic changes with age. - **The Procedure**: - Received an injection of genetically modified plasmids into his shoulder. - These plasmids produce **Follistatin**, a protein that inhibits muscle breakdown. - The plasmids turn his muscle cells into mini-factories that produce Follistatin for 1-2 years. - **Results**: - Significant loss of fat and gain in muscle mass. - Shared his journey on Twitter, gaining attention from notable figures like Jeff Bezos and Marc Benioff. - His epigenetic age reduced from 47 to 30. --- **Segment 6: Understanding the Technology** - **RA** and **FK** delve deeper into the science: - **Plasmids**: Circular DNA molecules used in genetic engineering. - **Minicircle Technology**: A method to make plasmids last longer in the body. - The plasmids are modified to produce specific proteins continuously. - **Safety and Risks**: - **FK** addresses concerns about genetic modification. - Notes that the technology includes a "kill switch" activated by antibiotics. - Emphasizes that the proteins produced are natural to the body. --- **Segment 7: The Future of Gene Therapy** - **FK** talks about upcoming experiments: - Plans to receive a gene therapy involving **Klotho**, a protein linked to increased IQ and reversal of arterial calcification. - Describes the potential cognitive enhancements as his "Jason Bourne arc." - **Ethical and Philosophical Considerations**: - **RA** asks if **FK** is afraid of the risks. - **FK** responds that he's more afraid of the risks of doing nothing. - Discusses the desire to prevent the inevitable decline associated with aging. --- **Segment 8: Epigenetics and Lifestyle** - **FK** explains **epigenetics**: - The study of how behaviors and environment can cause changes that affect gene expression. - Lifestyle factors like diet, sleep, and exercise can improve or worsen epigenetic health. - **Generational Impact**: - Epigenetic changes can be passed down to future generations. - Highlights the importance of healthy living not just for oneself but for descendants. --- **Segment 9: The Role of Sleep and Recovery** - **FK** emphasizes the critical role of sleep in health: - Sleep is when the body repairs DNA and conducts maintenance. - Lack of sleep negatively affects epigenetic health. - **RA** and **FK** discuss the misconception of "grind culture" and the undervaluing of rest. --- **Segment 10: Mobility and Fascia Health** - **FK** introduces the concept of **fascia**: - Connective tissue that surrounds muscles and organs. - Healthy fascia is crucial for mobility and overall physical health. - **Yoga and Mobility**: - **FK** practices yoga to maintain flexibility and fascia health. - Discusses how yoga acts as an internal massage for organs. - **Neurological Benefits**: - Yoga and specific mobility exercises can improve proprioception (body awareness in space). --- **Segment 11: Alternative Therapies** - **FK** talks about **Proprioceptive Deep Tendon Reflex (P-DTR)**: - A therapy focusing on the nervous system to alleviate pain and improve movement. - Describes personal experiences where simple physical manipulations led to immediate relief. - **Skepticism and Acceptance**: - Acknowledges that such therapies may face skepticism due to lack of extensive scientific studies. - Emphasizes personal experience and observable results. --- **Segment 12: Limitations of Science and Studies** - **RA** and **FK** discuss the challenges with scientific studies: - Mention that studies can be found to support almost any health claim. - Stress the importance of personal experimentation and listening to one's body. - **Critique of Overreliance on Studies**: - **FK** points out that many studies are not reproducible or have flawed methodologies. - Encourages a balance between scientific evidence and practical outcomes. --- **Segment 13: The Future of Biohacking** - **FK** shares his vision for the future: - Believes that more people will adopt biohacking as technologies become safer and more accessible. - Hopes to inspire others to take control of their health. - **Living Longer and Better**: - **RA** asks about **FK**'s aspirations for longevity. - **FK** expresses a desire to live indefinitely, as long as quality of life remains high. --- **Segment 14: Final Thoughts** - **RA** reflects on the conversation: - Expresses gratitude for **FK**'s openness and willingness to share his journey. - Notes the importance of such discussions in expanding public understanding of health and longevity. - **Call to Action**: - **RA** encourages listeners to research, stay curious, and consider the possibilities that biohacking presents. - **FK** invites people to take proactive steps in managing their health. --- **Conclusion** The episode wraps up with mutual respect and excitement for future conversations. **RA** hints at having **FK** back on the show to delve deeper into topics like genetic engineering, epigenetics, and the ethics of biohacking. --- **Key Takeaways** - Personal health crises can be catalysts for groundbreaking self-experimentation. - Advances in genetic engineering offer promising avenues for enhancing human health and longevity. - Lifestyle choices have profound effects on genetic expression and overall well-being. - Alternative therapies may offer solutions where traditional medicine falls short, but they often lack mainstream acceptance. - Critical thinking and personal responsibility are essential in navigating health decisions. --- **Disclaimer** This summary is intended for informational purposes only. The topics discussed involve experimental therapies and personal health choices that may not be widely accepted or approved by regulatory bodies. Always consult with qualified healthcare professionals before making significant changes to your health regimen.

Ranveer mentioned Warren Buffet, and it's something I resonate with and believe now through all my bio hacking experience, it's all in the mind. Happy mind, healthy body. I also believe everyone is different and the practice of ayurveda reflects this as we have different constitutions and these can change as we go through life and it's experiences as one diet may work for one person but not necessarily someone else. Very good podcast. Trust yourself as the human being is very powerful

It's good technological discussion. But spiritually how does it help living that long just eating and sleeping unless heart does not become pure and one does not serve others in the need to leave. Physical suffering and mind's ablility to accept the suffering as delusion allows life journey worthwhile to become divine/merge in god.
