I Impulse bought a Lynx gen 1 on ebay without even knowing what it was. It was just the first "Ending soonest" for parts item and it was cheap enough and looked interesting. Doesn't power on - I've already got the power module rebuild kit in the mail. Such an interesting console that none of my friends have ever heard of - we all had gameboys and game gears...one friend had the Sega Nomad - but none of us have ever heard of this. Super cool.

I have my Lynx from BITD. Atari gave me it as a token of their appreciation for me organizing, advertising (at games stores), and running a Lynx games tournament. I have another Lynx that I purchased from someone recently that I will be putting this LCD in. I am currently developing hardware and software for the Lynx.

I am a huge Atari fan. My brothers and I had Atari Lynx growing up. We used the Lynx cable and played a lot of game multi player like Slime World and Warbirds. Unfortunately, My original Lynx stopped working years ago and I don't even know what become of it. Two years ago however I purchased a Lynx locally where I live. I ran into your video and knew that I wanted this screen upgrade. I ordered it from Benn Venn and got it all installed. What a huge difference it makes to screen quality and battery life. I will never go back. I also invested in an Atari Lynx Game Drive. Also another item if you are a Lynx fan it is a must have for the original game library. Great Video and thanks for the great install instructions I used them and it really helped me.

Thanks for the clear and concise overview! I've had a Lynx v2 with several dozen games stashed away from when I was in middle school and I hadn't really touched it in a long time. This mod was surprisingly easy and really made it playable again. Before the upgrade, the screen was terribly washed out (I don't remember it being that bad) but the mod made it look great so I can go back and relive some of my childhood gaming.

I did this too with my 2nd gen with Ben's work. Though I was crazy lucky at the time to catch a 1 piece option instead of 10 at the time, my order came with a dead pixel. Ben responded and replaced it so fast, I seriously wish he was my BFF.. he is in my heart lol. Your 2nd gen Lynx NEEDS a Benn screen. I feel mine is priceless here in the near future.

Atari found in their focus groups, that people perceived bigger as better. Turns out focus groups are terrible when it comes to product design. And yes, the exact same thing as what happened with Microsoft and the original XBOX controller. The original prototype was also kinda large, but I mean it was 1986, and it was on par with full consoles from a few years prior, so...

So, after running across Beh Heck's Game Gear screen mod video, I was inspired to look up any install vids for Lynx screen mods and ran across this one. The prospect of a drop-in upgrade was highly compelling, and the demonstration did not disappoint. This prompted me to pull my own Lynx II out of its (generic pluck-out-the foam-square-to-customise) carry case and good thing I did :D...the foam rubber had stiffened and deterioated to the point some of it was stuck to the face of the unit (!), but luckily it had not fused to the plastic, and some rubbing with Pledge cleaned it up. Now as for the specifics: My particular unit came direct from Atari, as I took advantage of a trade-in program where for the princely sum of $50 (plus $5 shipping) and a first-gen Lynx, one could upgrade to the newer version with better battery life, stereo sound, etc. I still have the original box with warranty cards, instructions, and the money order stub I paid for the trade-in with, showing I shipped it from NYC on 01-06-1994 (insured) and the reciept for the second-gen unit shipping back from Atari Comsumer Direct Sales on 01/17/1994. (with a UPS sticker showing it entering their system a day later) During and immediately after the Lynx's active support period I managed to accumulate a grand total of 41 game cards for it, the last ones I believe coming from Telegames USA's facility. I guess I'll need to bookmark Benn Venn's page (I'm not on FB) and hopefully manage to peek in around when the next batch of upgrades become available.

I had both a version 1 and a version 2 of the Lynx in my childhood. These things CHEWED through batteries because of that fluorescent tube. On another note, your Lynx 2 looks like it’s in really good condition. An interesting point for people who don’t know: these had four buttons but only 2 were usable at a time. This was so you could flip the unit upside down to play it left or right handed. It had some pretty good arcade ports like Hard Drivin’ which was an early polygon 3D game and ramparts, a tower defence game among others. It was a very impressive system graphically let down by its poor screen, abysmal battery life and relatively small library. It was also very large.

Hey Stuart! That’s a great point I should have mentioned that in the video, the Lynx is ambidextrous. Agreed, these things are batteries like crazy, kinda like the game gear. I’ll have to check out those games, they sound pretty good! Thanks for the recommendations and the comment Stuart, cheers buddy!

". It was a very impressive system graphically let down by its poor screen, " Compared to what? Maybe a top of the line 5000 Dollar laptop or the tiny turbo express (which was better, but also 300Dollars and maybe 1/2 the size), but compared to the gameboy and game gear, the Lynx's screen was not particularly bad. The game gear suffered in all the same ways. The Gameboy had horrible horrible motion blur and was spinach green as the old ads loved to point out and it was unplayable in the dark.

BennVenn does some fantastic work! As a Lynx owner myself, this is pretty exciting. The Lynx has historically been one of the more difficult handhelds to modify until now. However, It should be noted that this kit will only work for the Atari Lynx II, due to the difference in the layout and design of the internal components on the Lynx II. For that matter, only certain models of the Lynx II are covered by this mod. From BennVenn's site: "NOT fully compatible with version C104129-001 Motherboards. These are not common and were an early lynx2 design which used lynx1 IC's. This means you'll need to use a Lynx1 LCD kit for these motherboards. The side effect of using a Lynx2 kit in these consoles is a jumpy splash screen. The game runs fine, just the splash/logo at startup is unstable." It does say that there are drop-in LCD kits coming soon for the original Lynx though. Which is the model I have.

I did the McWill mod on my Lynx 1 and it was a beast of a project. Unfortunately it was short lived because I had a catastrophic power supply failure that killed my Lynx 1 and possibly the McWill screen. I only had about month with the modded Lynx 1. I have one of these screens going through US customs right now, but I’m not sure if the bracket is included- I sure hope it is. If this mod ends up as easy and as high quality as it seems, I’m going to be looking to buy a second Lynx. These devices are incredible and I’d love nothing more than to do some com Lynx action with my son. Great video, keep up the good content!

It looks terrible by modern standards but by 1990 standards it was really amazing. I've since bought another Lynx 1 and replaced the screen with a Mcwill, but I will leave my Lynx II unmodded so I can play it as it was. love to see the more unpopular and obscure consoles get the spotlight. Sadly now the rice of these lovely consoles will rise. I miss when I could go to the bargain bins and get these for dirt cheap.

Awesome! Your mods are great and so varied. What screen/mod can I use for a DS Lite that's similar to the GBA IPS mod? All the screens I see for it are TFT and I know at least the top screen is pretty good but I have a DS Lite with a broken top screen and was hoping a shell swap and high quality screen was in order instead of just a "OEM" TFT screen lol. Any ideas? Thanks!

Thank you Manjushri! Glad you are enjoying the channel! Unfortunately at the moment, there is no IPS mod for the DS lite. Your best option is a replacement OEM TFT display. Not sure if there will be kits for DS since the quality is pretty good. I hope that answers your questions buddy! Best of luck! Cheers!

I traded my Master System and a ton of games for the original Lynx and the game 'Toki'...Within an hour of getting it home I already regretted the trade as I was bored very quickly with the one game and couldn't afford any more...Long story short, my cousin bought it from me for a top price and I ended up buying a Mega Drive with 'Altered Beast' & 'Hellfire' (Japanese) games plus the 'Honeybee' adaptor so I could play Japanese import carts on it also, so it all worked out in the end!

Oh man sorry to hear about the initial trade, but glad things worked out with the Mega Drive! Fantastic console, one of my favorites! And those are great games too! Cheers Makoy!

I'm just wondering if the resolution of the bennvenn kit matches that of the original screen, or if it's at least a multiple of the original.

That’s a great question Mike! I am not sure if it is integer scaled. I have a feeling it is a stretched image. But again not 100% sure. I checked the BennVenn website and couldn’t find any information on it. Sorry bud.

All that wasted screen space NO!!!!. lol It's fine I know they can't get it custom cause of the cost. Also I'd luv to see maybe in your vids like these to include maybe some extended gameplay on the handheld maybe some key games in a longer montage nothing crazy but a min or two more to really show off the screen. Just a thought. keep up the good work man. : D

Never had a lynx but a game gear... Read about the lynx back then in a gaming magazine saying it had a better screen compared to the gg... I remember wanted to get a lynx but I was just to expensive so I would never getting one since I had a a GG... Still today I'm thinking time to time to pick one up... But the grown up me have to much stuff anyway so I'm just enjoying watching this kind of videos instead :-) .... Got the ben venn game boy color screen and waiting impatiently for him to release the GG screen... So yes have to much stuff already ;-)

Lynx was my 1st ever console. I had a c64 to that point. Had amazing games. Calafornia games. Slime world. Chips challenge. Blue lightning being my favs. Had a friend at school a d we played mp a lot. Does this mod work in a gen 1 cobsolr?

Hey Dom! Yeah slime world is a classic, I remember playing that on my friends Lynx when I was younger. Haven’t tried blue lightning yet, but it looks really awesome! Unfortunately this mod does not work for the Gen 1. However, bennvenn has a specific kit for the Gen 1, although it requires more soldering. Cheers buddy!
